Greyhound women and men's basketball opens Northeast-10 Conference playoff action Monday, Tuesday in Laska GymFebruary 29, 2008
WORCESTER, Mass. --- To say that the basketball seasons at Assumption College have been ultra successful and satisfying would be a gross misunderstatement. The Greyhounds are one of only three New England institutions with TWO 20-game winners. Only Division I Connecticut and Division III Amherst can make the same claim. The women's team has posted a 21-8 overall record tying the team-record for wins in a season (21-9 in 2003-04) and have earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference playoffs. Last year the team finished 13-16 overall (9-13 in the conference) and was 1-1 as the No. 9 seed the conference playoffs. This is the fourth 20-win season for the team since 1999-00. TICKETS: $6 for adults, $3 all students with I.D., $3 seniors, $3 children 12-and-under. The men's team is currently 20-9 overall, winning 20 times for the 14th time in their long and storied history. They have also earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. Last year the team finished 11-17 overall (9-13 in the conference) The two teams are among the most improved in the region . . . last year posting a cumulative 24-33 overall mark (18-26 in the conference) and this year with a 41-17 mark to date (29-15 conference) . . . an improvement of 17 victories! In addition, women's coach KERRY PHAYRE has improved her career win total with the Greyhounds to 196, while men's coach SERGE DE BARI '71 has improved his win total to 96.
The Greyhounds are led by senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) who averages 9.4 points and leads the Northeast-10 Conference in rebounding (9.9) while also being ranked in steals (71), assists (81), field goal accuracy (.518) and assists/turnover ratio (0.79). Floyd became the fourth Greyhound to reach both 1,000 points (currently 1,210) and 1,000 rebounds (currently 1,055) and is merely the second to have four 200 rebound seasons. Junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) leads the team averaging 15.5 points and also sets the pace with an .814 free throw percentage and 49 three-pointers. She also reached the magical 1,000-point plateau in the her career (currently 1,028) and is now the career free throw accuracy leader (.810). Junior point guard TRISH GARDNER (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) has become the most indispensable member of the team and is the first point since 2001-02 to reach 100 assists (currently 156) and leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.97). Freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) averages 9.5 points with 25 three-pointers and sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) rounds out the starting five averaging 10.0 points and 4.8 rebounds with a team-leading 28 blocked shots. Senior forward MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) averages 7.6 points and 4.4 rebounds with 26 blocks, while sophomore guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock Academy) averages 6.4 points and is among the team leaders in field goal (.485) and free throw (.813) accuracy. The Greyhounds will open with Bryant TUESDAY at 7 p.m.

Northeast regional tournament (EIGHT teams are selected) is scheduled for March 14, 15 and 17. The host site will be the No. 1 regional seed (projected at this time to be Holy Family University in Philadelphia, PA) for ALL games. The Hounds have also defeated Post, CT (64-62), the C.A.C.C. North champion, to become the second team in New England Division II history with 1,000 wins. And, won at L.I.U.-C.W. Post (22-3 overall, 17-1 conference), the East Coast Conference champion, 73-71. Senior forward/captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) is the Greyhounds' team inspirational leader averaging 12.4 points and 6.4 rebounds. He became a member of the vaunted 1,000-point club (currently 1,000) in the Hounds' final regular-season game at Pace. Senior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley) leads the team with a 14.3 average and 8,4 rebounds. He is also the conference pacesetter in blocked shots (59) and is among the leaders in floor accuracy (.505). He scored his 1,000th point (currently 1,079) on a dunk at Saint Rose. Rounding out the starting lineup are junior guard PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) is the team's top defensive performer and averages 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds along with 131 assists and 24 blocked shots. Sophomore point COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) averages 10.3 points with 86 assists and 55 steals, while senior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin) averages 10.4 points and leads the team with 44 three pointers (.396). Top reserves include junior guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) who averages 6.2 points with 32 three-pointers and a team-leading .811 free throw percentage and freshman forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) who averages 7.0 points and 2.5 rebounds with 29 three-pointers. Baldarelli had a season-high 28 points in the Hounds' win last week against Stonehill. The Greyhounds will open with Massachusetts Lowell MONDAY at 7 p.m.
