Blaisdell, Swan, Sullivan key Greyhounds past Queens, 5-0, in men's soccer actionAugust 26, 2007WORCESTER, Mass. --- It was a day to remember for the Greyhounds as the Assumption College men's soccer team remained undefeated after two games with a resounding 5-0 win over Queens, NY College SUNDAY at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The win was also the first in the coaching career of first-year mentor JEREMY BONOMO. The Greyhounds have opened their 2007 season by tying Molloy, NY (1-1) and defeating Queens, NY (5-0).
Freshman forward STEPHEN BLAISDELL (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick) scored two goals and freshman midfielder JEFF SWAN (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield-Ludlowe) added a Greyhound record-tying four assists to pace the offense. Only Hounds' Hall of Famer Mario Bisol '80 had assisted on four goals in a single game---that coming against Merrimack (October 12, 1977). Swan has now assisted on five of the six goals scored by the team in two games. Another freshman, goalkeeper BRANDAN SULLIVAN (Halesite, NY/Saint Dominic) made 12 saves to post his first career shutout. Only Dave Durham '81, who shutout Nichols (2-0) (September 18, 1977) in his first career game, registered a shutout faster in a career than Sullivan. His goals-against average in two starts is a stingy 0.45 with 19 saves (.950 save percentage). Hounds' sophomore defender/captain AUSTIN PRETE (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) opened the scoring finishing a corner kick. Freshman defender JOHN MC LARNEY (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) deflected the Swan kick and Prete finished at 5:01. Junior forward/captain PAUL MURPHY (pictured right) (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) scored his second goal of the season on a rebound---also on an assist from Swan via a corner kick at 19:58. Blaisdell scored his first career goal taking a Swan pass on the near side and beating Queens' freshman goalkeeper Brian Brabazon to his left side at 35:03. Less than five minutes later freshman forward NICHOLAS FABRIZI (Farmington, CT/Farmington) registered his first career goal rebounding his own shot to make it 4-0. In the second half Blaisdell picked up his second goal of the game from Swan and McLarney collecting his own rebound off the crossbar. The Greyhounds outshot Queens, 19-17. Assumption is next in action opening its Northeast-10 Conference schedule TUESDAY at American International College at 3 p.m. Queens hosts Stonehill College in its home opener also on Tuesday at 3 p.m. CLICK HERE for complete scoring summary |
