Swan's late goal leads men's soccer past NE-10 rival Bentley, 2-1October 2, 2007
ASSUMPTION 2, BENTLEY 1
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman forward JEFFREY SWAN (Fairfield, CT/Fairfiedl Ludlowe) scored the game-winner with just 44 seconds remaining as Assumption College defeated Bentley College, 2-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer game TUESDAY at the Multi-Sports Stadium. The Greyhounds, now 3-7-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the conference have posted a 2-0-1 record over their last three outings. Bentley is 3-8-1, 1-6-0. Swan's fourth goal of the season came as the Greyhounds pressed offensively late in the game. Sophomore forward DOUG STARBIRD (Dunstable, MA/Groton Dunstable) sent Swan into the box alone and Swan beat Bentley College goalkeeper DEREK DUBOIS into the lower right corner of the net. The Greyhounds opened the scoring as junior forward/captain PAUL MURPHY (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) scored off a 2-on-1 breakaway in the 35th minute. The goal was his team-leading eighth of the season--the most since Chris Laut '05 scored 12 in 2004 for the Greyhounds. Freshman forward STEPHEN BLAISDELL (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick) sent him in alone and Murphy beat the keeper to right corner. The Falcons tied the game at 46:39 as HARRIS SMRIKO scored his fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick. The goal snapped the scoreless string of freshman Greyhounds goalkeeper BRANDON SULLIVAN (Halesite, NY/Saint Dominic) at 261:44. Sullivan ended with seven saves, while DuBois also made seven stops for the Falcons. Bentley outshot the Greyhounds, 18-13. The Greyhounds will play at Southern Connecticut State SATURDAY at 7 p.m. in another Northeast-10 Conference match. Bentley hosts American International SATURDAY at 2.
