Greg Twomey basket with 22 seconds left lifts Greyhound men's basketball past Stonehill, 64-62, in NE-10 actionFebruary 16, 2008
ASSUMPTION 64, STONEHILL 62
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Senior forward/captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) scored a runner with 22 seconds left to lift men's basketball past Stonehill College, 64-62, in a key Northeast-10 Conference game SATURDAY in the Laska Gym.
Twomey, who scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, rallied the Greyhounds from a 28-25 halftime deficit to improve their record to 19-7 overall and 13-6 in the conference (third place) with three games to play. They are now in prime position to annex their 13th 20-win season and first since 2002-03. The Skyhawks moved to a 28-25 halftime advantage as sophomore forward A.J. RUDOWITZ (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) had 11 points. A dunk by senior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) (11 first-half points) on a lob from junior guard PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) put the Greyhounds in front 23-22 with 5:10 remaining. Stonehill would outscore the Hounds, 6-2, to close out the half ahead by three points. Freshman guard MIKE KERNAN (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) drilled a jumper on a feed from junior forward COLIN SCANLON (Centreville, VA/Flint Hill) to put Stonehill in front and junior guard MATT HALL (Springfield, MA/Wilbraham-Monson) hit a short jumper in the paint to make it a three-point game, 26-23. The Hounds' Twomey scored on a fastbreak on an assist from sophomore guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) and the Skyhawks' Rudowitz finished with an inside move. The teams traded baskets for most of the second half until a long three-pointer by freshman forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) tied the game, 53-53, with 7:18 left. With 37 seconds left Rudowitz put Stonehill back in front 62-61 making both ends of a two-shot foul situation before Twomey's heroics 15 seconds later put the Hounds in front to stay. Sophomore guard RANDELL STALLWORTH (Toms River, NJ/Msgr. Donovan) missed an open corner three-pointer with four seconds left and junior guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) corralled the rebound and made a free throw with a second left to account for the final. The Greyhounds outrebounded Stonehill, 37-28, with 13 coming on the offensive glass. Diethorn led the Greyhounds with 19 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, while Twomey finished 15 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots and Bajema had 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Diethorn now has 1,043 points, while Twomey inched closer to the 1,000-point mark with 968 points. Rudowitz led Stonehill with 20 points, while Hall (12 points, 6 rebounds) and freshman guard VINCE ROSARIO (Perth Amboy, NJ/McCarrick) (10 points) played well in support roles.
