ASSUMPTION 64, POST 62

SMITHFIELD, RI --- Senior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley) scored two free throws after time had expired as Assumption College came-from-behind for the second straight night to defeat Post University (Waterbury, CT), 64-62, in the Bryant University Invitational at the Chace Center.

In addition, the Greyhounds improved their all-time won-loss record to 1,000-819 since the program's first-recorded data in 1922-23. They became just the 62nd team in NCAA Division II history and join conference rival Saint Michael's as the only New England Division II teams with 1,000 wins.

Sixteen teams have earned 1,000 wins in New England basketball history including nine Division I teams (including crosstown rival Holy Cross) and five Division III teams. The Greyhounds are the eighth in Massachusetts history.

The Greyhounds enjoyed a 28-16 advantage in the paint and scored 25 points off turnovers as determining factors in a close game.

The Eagles had moved to a six-point advantage, 61-55, with 2:08 remaining as junior center JESSE IYALEKHUE (Bronx, NY/Columbus) hit a lane jumper on a feed from junior forward A.J. REITTER (Baltimore, MD/Franklin).

The Hounds junior forward PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) then made both ends of a one-and-one and senior forward /captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) converted a layin off a senior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin). Twomey's ensuing free throw completed the three-point play making it 61-60 with 1:35 left.

Reitter made one of two free throws before Twomey made a twisting layup to tie the game at 62-62 with 40 seconds left.

After a turnover by the Eagles, Shea missed a three-pointer and Diethorn collected the offensive rebound---his game-high 17th rebound---and made both ends of a two-shot foul situation for the win.

The Eagles took the lead for the first time as Reitter connected on a wing three-pointer with 5:14 left in the period to lead 21-20 and went on to enjoy a 33-29 advantage at the half.

Twomey led the Greyhounds with 19 points, while Diethorn ended with 16 points, 17 rebounds (he is the 16th Greyhound with as many as 14 defensive rebounds in a game) and four blocks. Shea ended with 12 points, four assists, three blocks and a steal.

The Greyhounds are next in action WEDNESDAY (January 2, 2008) when they host Northeast-10 Conference rival University of Massachusetts Lowell at 7:30 p.m. The game will be webcast by NE10-TV.
