Greyhound ice hockey scores seven unanswered goals in the third period to defeat Worcester State, 11-3

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College ice hockey scored seven unanswered goals, including four on the power play, in the third period to break open a close game en route to an 11-3 non-conference win THURSDAY night at the Buffone Rink.


Before the game the Greyhounds honored their nine seniors including: right wing PATRICK CIUMMO (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles/Winchendon School), defenseman/captain PHIL DEMERS (Rutland, MA/Saint John's), center LUKE MC DONOUGH (Norfolk, MA/Mt. St. Charles), defenseman RANDY MORIN (Auburn, ME/Little/Hebron Academy), center/captain MATT PAGET (Hingham, MA/Hingham/Winchendon School), left wing JOHN ROUTHIER (Saugus, MA/Malden Catholic/Winchendon School), center MIKE RUST (Swanzey, NH/Cushing Academy), left wing SEAN STAID (Peabody, MA/Saint Mary's/Northfield-Mount Hermon) and left wing/captain JIM TRAHON (Needham, MA/Needham/Salisbury School).

The Greyhounds led 2-1 after one period and 4-3 after two periods before the third-period barrage. Ciummo and freshman MICHAEL DWYER (Somerville, MA/Worcester Academy) led the offensive parade with two goals each. Sophomore defenseman PAT KEENAN (Candia, NH/Central/Berwick Academy) finished with three assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper DAVID PINKHAM (Malden, MA/Arlington Catholic) made 19 saves to post the win, his fourth of the season and lower his goals-against average to 4.52.

Freshman defenseman TODD DAVIS (Ann Arbor, MI/Orchard Lake Saint Mary's/Holderness School) opened the scoring on a nice feed from sophomore right wing JAMES CAPULLI (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy/Williston-Northampton) at the 6:32 mark. Freshman right wing MICHAEL DWYER (Somerville, MA/Worcester Academy) made it 2-0 with his second goal of the season at 11:56---assisted by freshman center MATT SCIOLI (North Reading, MA/North Reading/Bridgton Academy) and sophomore defenseman PAT KEENAN (Candia, NH/Central/Brewick Academy). Senior center MARK BUCCI (Sellersville, PA/Wyoming Seminary) scored his fifth goal of the season to put Worcester State on the scoreboard with 14 seconds left in the period.

The Greyhounds then scored two quick goals to open the second period as freshman center BRIAN PHILLIPS (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow/Hill School) and Dwyer, on the power play, made it 4-1. Worcester State then came back with two goals less than two minutes apart late in the period to make it a one-goal game entering the final period. Senior forward MATT AUWARTER (Malverne, NY/Suffolk Juniors) scored on the power play at 15:10 and freshman forward MARK ELIA (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) at 16:50 at even strength.

The final period belonged to the Greyhounds as Capulli scored his first goal of the season, sophomore center FRANK BOVA (Princeton, MA/Wachusett) his sixth on the power play, Ciummo his fourth, Trahon, the Greyhounds' leading scorer with 9-13--22 points, his ninth to make it 8-3. Then three power play goals by McDonough, his sixth, Staid, his sixth and Ciummo again, his fifth closed out the scoring.

The Greyhounds are now 7-17 overall and conclude their regular season at non-conference opponent Curry College TUESDAY at the Max Ulin RInk in Malden. Worcester State is now 2-21.

The Northeast-10 Conference playoffs begin Friday, March 1. The Greyhounds will be seeded sixth and open play at the No. 3 seed on-the road---that opponent is still to be determined.
