Sarah Ranieri leads Greyhounds field hockey past Franklin Pierce, 3-2, in overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore forward SARAH RANIERI (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) (PICTURED RIGHT) scored two goals including the game-winner just 50 seconds into overtime as the Assumption College field hockey team defeated Franklin Pierce University, 3-2, in a Northeast-10 Conference game here SATURDAY.

The game also featured the goaltending of postgraduate KAITLIN BURKE (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) who made seven saves as the Greyhounds evened their record at 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring early and then scored late to send the affair into overtime.

The Ravens sophomore midfielder Katie Debler (Walpole, MA/Walpole) scored at the 6:21 mark taking a feed from postgraduate forward Mary Beth Huszar (Greenville, NH/Mascenic Regional). Huszar pass came from the right wing and Debler tipped in past Burke for a 1-0 lead.

The Greyhounds would come back at 15:15 as sophomore forward HILLARY ZYSK (Walpole, MA/Walpole) scored a rebound after the intial shot by junior forward MAURA STRICKLAND (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) was stopped by FPU junior goalkeeper Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk).

Zysk and Debler, the scorers of the game's first two goals were high school teammates at Walpole High.

Ranieri put the Greyhounds in front as junior defender BRITTANY FORD (Worcester, MA/Doherty) made a nifty pass inside which Ranieri redirected past Howard at 31:05 of the first half.

The Ravens would tie the game at 53:10 as sophomore forward ASHLEY ABERNETHY (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) scored after a scramble in front of Burke. Huszar was credited with her second assist of the game on the play.

Just 50 seconds the Greyhounds settled the issue as senior/captain midfielder JENNA LUCE (Conway, MA/Frontier) fed Ranieri on the left side for the game-winner.

The Greyhounds outshot the Ravens, 12-10, and had a 13-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Assumption (1-1, 1-1) is next in action THURSDAY when they host Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm College at 3:30. Franklin Pierce is now 0-2, 0-1).
