Jon Eisele record 49-yard field goal lifts Greyhound football past Division I-AA LaSalle, 10-7

October 27, 2007

ASSUMPTION 10, LASALLE 7

PHILADELPHIA, PA --- Senior placekicker JON EISELE (PICTURED RIGHT) (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy) kicked a school-record 49-yard field goal with 2:04 remaining to lift Assumption College past Division I-AA LaSalle University, 10-7, in non-conference football action here SATURDAY at McCarthy Stadium.

Eisele's field goal is the only the second field goal of over 40 yards in Greyhounds' football history. Kevin Clark kicked a 45-yarder against Fitchburg State (10-3-82) during the club years, while Tim Longden's 37-yarder against Stonehill (10-14-2000) was the previous varsity standard.

Ironically, Eisele had missed a 35-yarder wide right late in the first half and had a 27-yarder blocked in the waning stages of the third period.

Other standouts for the Greyhounds included sophomore wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett), who caught seven passes for 120 yards and junior quarterback TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) who completed 17-of-34 passes for 268 yards.

Canney tied the Greyhounds' single-season record of 51 receptions set last year by senior wide out JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and became the first sophomore to reach 1,000 yards in receiving yardage. He has now caught 83 for 1,033 yards---the seventh to reach that plateau. For the season he has 715 yards---only the third Greyhound with over 700 yards in a single season. Freshman running back HERB WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) (26 carries, 74 yards, 1 TD) and sophomore linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) eight (5-3--8) tackles played well in support roles.

The Greyhounds moved to a 7-0 lead in the second period as Woodard capped a two-play drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge. Eisele kicked the conversion.

The Greyhounds drove 32 yards for their only touchdown of the game. Freshman tackle MIKE FOLEY (Holden, MA/Saint John's) forced and recovered a fumble by freshman running back DERIC DUDINSKI (Sterling, VA/Park View) to start the march.

On the first play Humphrey found freshman tight end ERIC SCHINDLER (Kenilworth, NJ/Brearley) open down-the-middle for 31 yards to set up the Woodard score. The Explorers sophomore linebacker WAYNE DONAHUE (Philadephia, PA/West Catholic) made a score-saving tackle on the Schindler reception.

The Greyhounds would fumble away another scoring opportunity as senior corner JOHN COSTELLO (West Chester, PA/Henderson) recovered for the Explorers in the endzone and a interception by junior safety JAKE CORNELY (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) stopped the Hounds on the next series.

The Greyhounds would stop LaSalle in the third quarter as junior safety CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) made his fourth interception of the season (all in the last four games).

On the next series freshman linebacker JEFF LONGLEY (Browns Mill, NJ/Holy Cross) forced and recovered a fumble on a punt to set up the next Greyhound scoring opportunity. Humphrey connected with Canney for 32 yards and Woodard added an 11-yard scamper around right end to highlight the march. Eisele's attempted 27-yard field goal was blocked and recovered by LaSalle junior linebacker CASEY WALSH (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur).

The Explorers tied the game driving 58 yards in seven plays late in the fourth period. Sophomore running back DAVE MACKNET (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) scored from a yard out and junior placekicker ANTHONY PERLOZZI (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) kicked the game-tying conversion with 6:14 remaining.

Senior quarterback JOE PROCAPIO (Calvert, MD/Temple), who rushed for a game-high 95 yards on 11 carries, completed back-to-back passes to junior wide receiver SHANE KENDRICK (Atco, NJ/Camden Catholic) for seven and then 48 yards (on a third-and-three play) for his only two receptions of the game. Hounds' cornerback MIKE MOONAN (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) made a touchdown-saving tackle at the Greyhounds' four. Dudinski ran for a yard before the Greyhounds' senior end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) tackled Procopio for a five-yard loss. An offside penalty against the Greyhounds however reestablished LaSalle at the one setting up the score.

The Greyhounds would then drive for the game-winner on the ensuing series.

After Perlozzi kicked off into the endzone for a touchback, the Hounds moved downfield. First Woodard for seven yards, then Humphrey for five yards on a keeper for a first down on a third-and-three play. Humphrey then found Beers over-the middle for 43 yards to the LaSalle 25.

Woodard ran twice for two yards to the 21 and then Humphrey connected with Beers on a 21-yard slant for an apparent touchdown. Pass interference against Beers negated the score and the same duo combined for just four yards on the next play setting the stage for Eisele's heroics with 2:04 left.

Moonan intercepted Procopio to stop the Explorers with 14 seconds left.

NEXT WEEK: the Greyhounds, now 2-7, host L.I.U.-C.W. Post Friday with 7 p.m. kickoff in a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Greyhounds will honor their seniors before the game. LaSalle, now 0-7, is at Wagner College Saturday.
