Woodard top freshman as Northeast-10 Conference, ECAC announce all-stars

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College had a record number seven players recognized by the coaches of the Northeast-10 Conference on its all-star teams. In addition two were accorded academic all-conference honors as voted by the league's Sports Information Directors and three earned all-ECAC honors.
Freshman running back HERBERT WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem), the conference's second-leading rusher with 966 yards and 10 touchdowns, earned co-Freshman-of-the-Year honors with American International College quarterback Rob Parent. In addition, senior offensive tackle MATT CERINS (Manchester, CT/East Catholic) and senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) earned first-team all-ECAC Division II honors and Woodard was named the Freshman-of-the-Year.
In 11 games this past season Woodard rushed 179 times for 966 yards to lead the Greyhounds rushing game. He also had nine receptions for 42 yards and finished the season among the conference leaders with 1,016 all-purpose yards.
Woodard's best effort earned him the Boston Globe Golden Helmet, only the third Greyhound ever to win the award as the region's best player for a given week. He was also named the Football Gazette Division II National Player-of-the-Week. He rushed for a career- and season-high 277 yards on 21 carries and scored a team-record five touchdowns to lead his team to a record-setting 71-21 win at Saint Anselm. He also rushed for 100 or more yards at Pace (152 yards), vs. Merrimack (129 yards) and vs. Bryant (126 yards).
He was also named the Worcester Area Freshman-of-the-Year and a first-team all-star.

Senior offensive tackle MATT CERINS (Manchester, CT/East Catholic) and senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) both earned first-team all-Northeast-10 Conference honors, while four Greyhounds were named to the second-team including: sophomore wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett), senior guard MIKE OTTERBEIN (Manchester, CT/Manchester), sophomore middle linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) and junior safety CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South).
Worcester Area FOOTBALL All-Stars Announced
Assumption College had 12 players honored as the 17th annual Worcester Area Football All-Stars are announced. Senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) was named the Defensive Player-of-the-Year for the second straight year, while HERBERT WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) is the Freshman-of the-Year.

Earning second-team honors were sophomore cornerback BERNARD SCOTT (St. Petersburg, FL/Admiral Farragut), senior defensive end JOSH KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian), senior placekicker JON EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy), senior center MIKE SENELLA (Simi Valley, CA/Bishop Alemany) and senior wide receiver JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury).
Northeast-10 Conference All-Academic
Assumption College has had 11 student-athletes named to the Northeast-10 Conference all-academic teams in five sports to date inclduing both senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) and senior offensive guard MIKE OTTERBEIN (Manchester, CT/Manchester). To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met the following: 1) participated in at least half of the team's games and be either a starter/significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.2 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. Both players also earned a spot on the CoSIDA second-team all-region academic squad.
