ALBANY, NY --- Junior righthander JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/St. Peter-Marian) pitched a complete game seven-hit shutout and stroked three hits including his first home run of the season to lead Assumption College past the College of Saint Rose, 8-0, in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader here THURSDAY at Bleecker Stadium.

In the second game sophomore lefthander MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) allowed just two hits over eight innings pitching the Greyhounds to an 11-1 victory and a sweep of the two games.

Junior third baseman MIKE DI REDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) led the offensive parade for the Greyhounds---27 hits in the two games---with a six-for-nine performance with six RBI, while freshman outfielder JOSH DUFRESNE (Auburn, MA/Auburn) contributed five hits in seven trips with three RBI.

The team is also nearing a milestone as they have now won 896 games since the program's inception in 1912. Only New Haven has won more games in New England Division II (1,155 entering the season).

The Greyhounds jumped in front in the first inning of the opener as junior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) singled to left and stole second. Barbale then stroked a triple to rightcenter field for the run. The triple tied the Hounds' career record with Hall of Fame shortstop Bob Berard (1975-78).

They scored an unearned run in the second inning and got two more runs in the fifth inning on a Barbale home run, his first of the season, and a Dufresne RBI single. DiReda's three-run triple and a bases-loaded walk to Dufresne highlighted a four-run sixth inning.

In the second game the Greyhounds jumped on the Golden Knights early scoring four runs in each of the first two innings.

Sophomore first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) singled across the first run, senior catcher CHRIS DESIMONE (Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken) singled across two more and junior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) singled in the fourth run in the first inning.

In the second inning Baillargeon opened with a triple to the gap in leftcenter field and scored on a infield roller. DiReda hammered a three-run home run to highlight the inning. The Hounds scored three insurance runs in the seventh inning.

The Greyhounds Northeast-10 Conference game with Southern Connecticut scheduled for FRIDAY has been postponed to a still to-be determined date . . . Saturday's DH with American International College is now scheduled to start at 2 p.m. to allow the field to dry . . . the team will also play a doubleheader Sunday at American International.

GREYHOUNDS NOTES: junior righthander JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/St. Peter-Marian) is now two short of playing his 100th career game . . . sophomore lefthander MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) has a career ERA of 2.47, the lowest for a pitcher with at least 100 innings in 35 years . . . junior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) (97 hits) senior catcher CHRIS DESIMONE (Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken) (88 hits) are nearing the magic 100-hit mark . . . Scannell played his 100th game Thursday . . . sophomore righthander reliever TIM DUPUIS (Suffield, CT/Suffield High) has a 1.17 ERA in 25 appearances over two years and 0.66 this season in 10 games . . .
