Jeff Barbale, Derek Migrants power Greyhound baseball to sweep of Saint Michael's, 14-2 and 13-7

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior outfielder JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/St. Peter-Marian) and sophomore outfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) each had six hits and knocked across four runs leading Assumption College baseball past Saint Michael's College, 14-2 and 13-7, in a non conference doubleheader sweep SATURDAY at H.L. Rocheleau Field.
The first game also featured the route-going pitching of sophomore lefthander MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's), who allowed just five hits and struck out eight while improving his record to 3-1.
In the first game, the Greyhounds struck for six runs in the first inning after two were out. Barbale singled to leftcenter and Migrants followed with a double to the leftcenterfield gap. After sophomore catcher MATTHEW JOSE (Warwick, RI/Warwick) reached on a bases on balls sophomore designated hitter TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) doubled in a pair and senior first baseman DEVIN MURPHY (Waterbury, CT/Holy Cross) followed with an RBI single. After freshman shortstop coaxed a walk, sophomore third baseman CHRIS COLLETTI (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) drilled a two-run triple to the rightfield corner.
An RBI double by Barbale and a long two-run home run by Migrants-- his second of the season---over the football press box made it 9-0 after two inning.
Migrants singled across runs in the third and fourth, while Barbale cleared the bases in the fourth with a three-run double.
Saint Michael's got on the board in the top of the fourth as junior shortstop RYAN REATHER (Riverton, UT/Juan Diego Catholic) doubled in two runs.
In the second game the Greyhounds moved to a 7-2 lead, allowed Saint Michael's to tie the game with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning only to score six of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Sophomore lefthander ANDREW QUINN (Taunton, MA/Coyle & Cassidy) closed out the Purple Knights with an uneventful seventh inning.
An error allowed the Purple Knights to take a 1-0 first-inning lead in game two however the Greyhounds came right back. An RBI single by freshman outfielder WALLY DEROSIER (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and a two-run double by Scafidi ushered the Greyhounds to a 3-1 advantage.
Junior third baseman MIKE DIREDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) hit a long home run---his first of the season---onto the football field to start the second inning and Derosier added an RBI triple to make it 5-1 after two innings.
Sophomore outfielder MATT BEAULIEU (Littleton, MA/Lawrence Academy) hammered a homer to centerfield for the Purple Knights in the top of the fourth, while a balk and a wild pitched plated two more Greyhound runs in the fourth for a 7-2 advantage.
The Purple Knights thenparlayed five hits keyed by a two-run double by ED FENNESSEY (Wilton, CT/Wilton) to tie the game at 7-7 in the sixth.
The then rallied to score six runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) started the rally with an infield hit and Barbale dropped a Texas Leaguer over the shortstops head. Migrants then singled to the bag at third base and reached second on a wild throw---the play also scored Scannell from second. Murphy was hit by a pitch and Scafidi followed with an RBI infield hit to shortstop with a subsequent error scoring Murphy from second base. A balk and a fielder's choice scored two more runs.
The Greyhounds, now 7-9 overall, host non-conference rival Dominican, NY College SUNDAY at Rocheleau Field, while Saint Michael's is now 2-10 overall---having played all its previous games in Fort Myers, Florida --and plays at Massachusetts Lowell Monday night at 7 p.m.
GREYHOUNDS NOTES: freshman outfielder WALLY DEROSIERS (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) continues to lead the team in batting at .405 (17-for42) . . . the Hounds are now batting .307 as a team . . . second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) played his 100th career game in the opener . . .
