SMITHFIELD, RI --- The Assumption College baseball team stroked a club record 31 hits and junior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) had four hits and broke the single-season mark with 81 as the Greyhounds rambled past New England No. 1 ranked Bryant University, 20-6, in a non-conference baseball game here SUNDAY at the Bryant Baseball Complex.
Baillargeon broke the single-season record, previously held by outfielder Dan McGowan '00 had 79 hits during the 2000 season, with a two-run double in the fifth inning. McGowan, also a Holy Name (Worcester, MA) product, is now the head coach of the Naps. Baillargeon, who is now batting .431, is the current average leader in the Northeast-10 Conference. He finished the season with 20 hits in his last 32 at bats! The single-game record for hits was originally set as the Greyhounds defeated Fitchburg State College (5/26/37) 71 years ago, 21-7. It was also the first time since they defeated Franklin Pierce (22-2) (4/23/02) they had scored as many as 20 runs in a game. It was the 35th 20-run game since the program's inception in 1912. Other standouts for the Greyhounds included sophomore centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer), who became the 36th Greyhound with five or more hits in a game---the first since Baillargeon vs. Bentley (4/27/06); freshman shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian), who had four singles and a walk; senior catcher CHRIS DE SIMONE (Johnston, RI/Hendricken), who had four singles and three RBI in his final game with the Greyhounds; junior leftfielder JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/Saint Peter-Marian), who had four singles and two RBI and junior third baseman MIKE DI REDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's), who added three singles and four RBI. The Greyhounds jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) had an RBI single. They scored three more in the second inning highlighted by an RBI single by Migrants and a two-run single by DiReda. An RBI single by DeSimone made it 5-0 in the third inning, while run-scoring singles by DiReda and Barbale up the score to 7-0 in the fourth. The Hounds scored seven runs on nine hits highlighted by the Baillargeon two-run double. They added five more runs on six hits in the eighth inning. The Greyhounds finished their season at 20-27, while Bryant is now 38-17. GREYHOUND NOTES: the Greyhounds are the team-leaders in batting in the Northeast-10 Conference at .316 . . . and in triples (21) . . . junior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) enters his senior year with 183 career hits (10th) and could become the career leader in games (needs 33), games started (needs 19), at bats (needs 137), hits (needs 75), doubles (needs 14), triples (needs 4) . . . he also set the single-season singles record (64) . . . he is also just the 15th Greyhound with over 100 total bases (103) in a single season . . . junior leftfielder JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) now has 119 career hits and the career triples record with 15 . . . senior catcher CHRIS DE SIMONE (Warwick, RI/Hendricken) finished with 108 career hits . . . junior third baseman MIKE DI REDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) now has 108 career hits . . . sophomore centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) has 110 career hits . . . junior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) had 106 career hits . . . freshman shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) set the mark with 12 sacrifices this season . . . |
