Greyhounds sweep past Saint Anselm, 13-1, 15-3, behind Jeff Barbale, Mike Baillargeon and win their 900th game!

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior righthander JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/St. Peter-Marian) pitched a complete-game four-hitter and struck out seven as Assumpion College baseball defeated Saint Anselm College, 13-1, in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader SATURDAY at Rocheleau Field.

In the second game, the Greyhounds continued the offensive assault with a 17-hit attack en route to a 15-3 victory.

Barbale was also the offensive standout for the Greyhounds with six hits in 10 trips---including the 100th of his career, while junior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) had five hits in seven at bats and knocked in five runs. The Greyhounds stroked 34 hits in the doubleheader.

In the process, the Greyhounds became just the second New England Division II team to win 900 games in their history. The Greyhounds, who started their baseball program in 1912 now own a 900-893-14 mark in 92 years of competition. Only the University of New Haven, which has posted a 1,171-358-6 record, has won more games.

Baillargeon had four hits in the first game, while freshman outfielder WALLY DEROSIER (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), freshman shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) and Barbale each had three hits to pace a 17-hit attack, scoring in all but the seventh inning.

Baillargeon scored on passed ball in the first inning and contributed an RBI single in the second and the Hounds plated another run in the third on an error. They added two more in the fourth on an RBI infield grounder by junior third baseman MIKE DIREDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) and a triple by Barbale.

Desrosier highlighted a six-run eighth inning with two-run single.

In game two, the Greyhounds jumped to a quick 2-0 lead as freshman outfielder JOSH DUFRESNE (Auburn, MA/Auburn) drilled a two-run single in the second inning and they added six more in the third inning. Dufresne singled across the first run, senior catcher CHRIS DESIMONE (Cranston, RI/Hendricken) walked with the bases loaded, Frigon singled in a third and later stole home on a double steal and Baillargeon had a sacrifice fly to highlight the inning.

Sophomore righthander DUSTIN WIRZBURGER (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) and freshmen righthanders JOSH THOMPSON (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) and PATRICK DYER (Clinton, MA/Clinton) combined to scatter eight hits on the mound, while Barbale, sophomore outfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) and Dufresne each had three hits.

The Greyhounds are now 14-23 overall and 7-16 in the conference, while Saint Anselm is 12-22 and 8-14. The two teams play another doubleheader SUNDAY in Manchester, NH at 1 p.m.

GREYHOUNDS NOTES: junior JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/St. Peter-Marian) now has 105 career hits and increased his career record with his 13th and 14th triples . . . junior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) is one of an elite Greyhounds group with three 50-hit seasons (52, 50, 57) and is now batting a team-leading .390 . . . freshman shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) finished with four hits in five trips with four walks and a sacrifice along with a steal of home and three outstanding defensive gems . . .
