Jared Kelly, Lauren Raswyck named premier senior student-athletes at Greyhound awards ceremony

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Six outstanding young people took center stage as Assumption College honored its premier student-athletes Monday, May 5, 2008, at the athletics department's annual Student-Athlete Awards Reception in the Andrew Laska Gymnasium. Women's basketball coach KERRY PHAYRE again served as Mistress of Ceremonies. The President of the College, DR. FRANCESCO CESAREO, helped with the presentations and gave closing remarks.

The Rev. Armand Desautels, A.A. Memorial Awards are presented in the name of the former President of the College (1952-64), to the premier senior male & female student-athletes. The candidates must combine academic achievement with athletic prowess and possess impeccable character.



One of the premier defensive players in Greyhounds' football history, defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) finished his storied career with 92-113--205 tackles with 57.5 tackles-for-loss, 28 quarterback sacks and 61 pass pressures.

He captained the 2006 and 2007 teams along with his brother Josh Kelly (Canton, MA/Xaverian), who played on the opposite end, and senior center Mike Senella (Simi Valley, CA/Bishop Alemany). and was named the team's Most Valuable Player for both his junior and senior seasons for Coach CORY BAILEY.

A Football Gazette preseason all-America selection, Kelly lived up to the billing as he finished third on the team with 29-42--71 tackles, 17.5 tackles-for-loss and eight quarterback sacks. He was named first-team Northeast-10 Conference all-star, first-team New England Football Writers all-star, first-team ECAC Division II all-star, second-team Daktronics all-region and second-team Football Gazette all-region. In addition he earned Worcester Area Football Defensive Player-of-the-Year for the second straight year.

He was also cited by the Northeast-10 Conference on its all-academic team and by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on its second all-academic team. He was also named to the National Football Foundation Honor Society.

He was a standout player at Xaverian High School in Westwood, MA for Coach Charlie Stevenson earning all-Catholic Conference, Neponset Valley Transcript and Boston Globe honors.

He expects to be graduated May 17 with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and carries a 3.444 grade point average. He has earned Assumption College Student Athlete Honor Roll citations in seven straight semesters (this semesters grade not available yet) including Directors Citations for a 3.5 GPA or higher in each of the last four marking periods.

He is the son of Mark and Elaine Kelly of Canton.



One of the premier players in Greyhound annals, libero LAUREN RASWYCK (Litchfield, NH/Campbell) is the first-and-only Greyhound volleyball player to be named a Northeast-10 Conference all-star. This past season she was selected the conference's Libero-of-the-Year in a vote by the league's coaches and also earned second-team all-conference honors. She earned third-team all-conference honors in 2007.

She was the captain of the 2007 team and also the team Most Valuable Player in both her junior and senior seasons.

The Greyhounds' career leader with 1,930 digs, Raswyck led the team to a 13-11 overall record, the first winning season since the 2000 team finished 14-13. The Hounds under the direction of first-year Coach GARY PATCH finished one win shy of qualifying for the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs.

The Greyhounds won the Worcester City Championship for the ninth time and extended their team win streak to 16 straight in that tournament.

This past season, she made 24 starts in 24 matches averaging 6.21 digs to lead the conference. She set a team record with 53 digs in a 3-2 win over Saint Anselm (9/4/07) earning conference Libero-of-the-Week three times and weekly honor roll plaudits twice. She also owns the second- and third-best match totals with 46 digs against Saint Michael's (10/14/06) and 45 against Felician, NJ (9/1/07).

She was named to the all-tournament team of the Assumption College Tip-Off Tournament and to the second-team conference all-academic team. She later earned Daktronics first-team all-region honors.

She led the team in digs as a freshman in 2004 (335), finished third in 2005 (381) and led the team and the Northeast 10 Conference with 649 and 565 the past two seasons. Those season totals are the second- and third-best in Greyhounds' history.

She was also a standout player for Coach Ann Halloran at Campbell High School (Litchfield, NH) and led her team to the 2003 state semifinal and also played in the New Hampshire Senior All-Star Game. She was named the Class M New Hampshire setter in both 2002 and 2003.

She expects to be graduated May 17 with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and carries a 3.260 grade point average. She has earned Assumption College Student-Athlete Honor Roll citations in six straight semesters (this semesters grade not available yet).

She is the daughter of Scott and Ruth Raswyck of Litchfield, NH.

The Andrew Laska Awards are presented in the name of the former men's basketball coach (1951-67), golf coach (1959-86) and Director of Athletics (1956-86), to both a male & female student-athlete, determined to be most dominant at the College for the year. Athletics ability, leadership and character are major determinants.



Junior guard BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) led the Greyhound's women's basketball team to a record-setting 22-10 overall mark and into the semifinal of the N.C.A.A. Division II Northeast Regional Tournament. She was the leading scorer (15.0 ppg) and also set the pace with an .814 free throw percentage and 49 three-pointers for Coach KERRY PHAYRE. The Greyhounds set a team-record with the 22 victories and participated in their third N.C.A.A. regional tournament.

She served as a captain for the 2007-08 season and is a captain-elect for 2008-09 and was also a team co-Most Valuable Player with senior forward Charde Floyd (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy).

Plasski became the 16th player in Greyhounds' history to reach the 1,000-point plateau in a career against Stonehill (2/16/08) and was named a first-team Northeast-10 Conference all-star, Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) first-team all-region performer and subsequently an honorable mention all American.

She was named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll 11 times this season and earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the San Diego Surf N Slam, in which the team finished 2-0, and was named to the all-tournament team of the Marriott Courtyard Classic hosted by the Greyhounds.

She produced 28 double-figure scoring games and seven games in which she scored 20 or more points. Her top games included 25 points (11-for-19 field goals) with a career-best 10 steals and five assists against New Haven (12/29/07) in the San Diego Surf N Slam, 25 points (9-for-14 field goals) against Saint Anselm (11/5/07) and 25 points versus Molloy, NY (11/16/07). She had a career-high 10 assists against Lander, SC (11/4/07) in the Disney Classic to go along with 15 points in her first career double-double.

She is the current career leader in free throw accuracy (248-for-306) at .810 and has scored 1,058 points. Plasski is just the fifth Greyhound to score her 1,000th point before her senior year joining only Joy Barry '92, Katie Kerr '00, Stacy Mattioli '00 and Meghan Sullivan '04.

An outstanding high school player, as well, she played for Coach Steve Fernandes at Durfee High School (Fall River, MA) and is the career scoring leader with 1,776 points. She earned all-star honors awarded by the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Fall River Herald-News and the New Bedford Standard Times.

Plasski is a History/Education major with a teaching/coaching career in the offing. She is the daughter of James and Doreen Plasski of Fall River, MA.



Senior goalkeeper/captain LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett) capped off her brilliant career by being named the Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer Goalkeeper-of the-Year for the third time in her illustrious career. She also served as a team captain for Coach NEIL STAFFORD.

Matysiak, who owns the Greyhounds' record book for goalkeeping, finished with 76 games (first), 6,970 minutes (first), 0.93 goals-against average (first), 39 wins (first) and 31 shutouts (first). Her 308 saves are fourth-best in team history.

This past season her 1.16 goals-against average in 16 games was among the conference leaders as were her total of 85 saves and four shutouts. She was named a first-team all-star for the third time (2004, 05, 07).

She played women's lacrosse for the first time in her career in the spring of 2008 serving as the team's goalkeeper for Coach LINDA DRAPEAU. She posted a .464 save percentage, while playing the second-most minutes in Greyhounds' history in a single season. She set team individual records for saves (215) and games played (14) and was named the team's Most Valuable Player in a vote of the players.

She played high school soccer at nearby Wachusett Regional for former Greyhound men's soccer standout Rick Lindsten '80 helping the team win the 2001 Massachusetts state title. She was a two-time Worcester Telegram & Gazette all star.

An Accounting major, she expects to be graduated May 17. She is the daughter of Peter Matysiak and Colleen Culligan of Holden.



Senior forward/center COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) enjoyed his finest season for the Greyhounds and Coach SERGE DEBARI '71 leading the team to a 24-11 record and a berth in both the Northeast-10 Conference and N.C.A.A. Division II Northeast Regional finals.

Diethorn led the team in scoring average (14.6 ppg), rebounding (8.6), field goal percentage (.509) and blocked shots (77) with 29 double-figure scoring games (career 60) and 13 double-figure rebounding games (26 career). He had a season high 28 points in a 71-59 win against Massachusetts Lowell and 22 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots in the N.C.A.A. first-round win over Holy Family. He scored 21 points, including his 1,000th career point at Saint Rose.

He was the Northeast-10 Conference Player-of-the-Week once and earned weekly honor status nine times, while also earning Disney Classic and N.C.A.A. Northeast Regional all-tournament honors.

His two free throws with no time left gave the Greyhounds a 64-62 win over Post, CT (12/29/07), the team's 1,000th victory as a program since 1922-23.

He earned second-team all-conference honors, National Association of Basketball Coaches (N.A.B.C.) second-team all-region and Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II (ECAC) second-team. And, he played in the N.A.B.C. East West National Senior All-Star Game at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA.

He finished his career with 1,175 points and 717 rebounds and the fourth most blocked shots in team history (168).

He scored 955 points and set the school record for blocked shots for Coach Win Palmer at Sewickley Academy. As a senior he averaged 14.5 points as the team had a record 18-game win streak and advanced to the state championship game with a 27-5 record.

A Management major with a minor in Philosophy he expects to be graduated May 17. He is the son of Dale and Cheri Diethorn of Pittsburgh, PA.



Junior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) has become one of the premier players in the Northeast-10 Conference. One of only three .400 hitters in the conference, he is on target for numerous postseason awards.

He finished the season batting .431 with 29 RBI, while leading the Greyhounds in average, runs (32), hits (81), walks (21) and stolen bases (8). He has also handled a team-high 216 total chances with just nine errors as the defensive leader of the infield. He has hit in 23 of his last 24 games and had 20 hits in 33 at bats over the last seven games for Coach GEORGE REIDY.

He set the team record with 81 hits and is the fourth Greyhound with over 70 hits in a single season joining Dan McGowan '00 (78 in 2000), Eric Tridenti '00 (74 in 2000) and Bill Bertrand '02 (70 in 2002)---only Tridenti did not prep at Holy Name High and McGowan is the current head coach of the Naps. He also has 183 career hits and will almost assuredly become the ninth member of the Hounds' exclusive 200-hit club early next season.

He is a Management major and a two-time captain and elected for a third straight time for the 2009 season. He will become just the second three-time captain in Greyhounds history joining Hall of Famer Willie Chartier who served in 1920, 21 and 22.

He played in high school at Holy Name for Coach Dick Maynard and was a two-time Central Massachusetts Conference all-star. He is a Management major and the son of Raymond and Robin Baillargeon of Worcester.

The Freshman-of-the-Year Awards are presented to both a male & female student-athlete in his/her first year, determined to be most dominant at the College for the year. Athletics ability, leadership & character are major determinants.



Greyhounds' first-year shortstop MARISSA PALUMBO (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) has already made her mark in the Northeast-10 Conference. She led the team in batting (.410), on-base percentage (.469), slugging percentage (.530), hits (48), walks (11) and stolen bases (4). She is the seventh-leading hitter in the Northeast-10 Conference and the leading first-year hitter.

She was just named the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman-of-the-Year and a first-team all-star.

As impressive as she was at the plate she was equally impressive in the field with 122 assists (led team) and a .962 fielding percentage. She earned Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll status twice for Coach RALPH DELUCIA.

The sister of former Greyhound softball standout Tanya, she prepped at Holy Name High in Worcester, playing for Coach Jill Shea and led Central Massachusetts in hitting (.696) as a senior.

She is expected to declare as an Accounting major and is the daughter of Joe and Valerie Palumbo of Worcester.



Freshman running back HERBERT WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem), the Northeast-10 Conference's second-leading rusher with 966 yards and 10 touchdowns, earned Freshman-of-the-Year in both the conference and the ECAC Division II.

In 11 games this past season Woodard rushed 179 times for 966 yards to lead the Greyhound's rushing game. He also had nine receptions for 42 yards and finished the season among the conference leaders with 1,016 all-purpose yards for Coach CORY BAILEY.

His best effort earned him the Boston Globe Golden Helmet, only the third Greyhound ever to win the award as the region's best player for a given week. He was also named the Football Gazette Division II National Player-of-the-Week. He rushed for a career- and season-high 277 yards on 21 carries and scored a team-record five touchdowns to lead his team to a record-setting 71-21 win at Saint Anselm. He also rushed for 100 or more yards at Pace (152 yards), against Merrimack (129 yards) and against Bryant (126 yards).

He was also named the Worcester Area Freshman-of-the-Year and a first-team all-star.

He played for Coaches Steve Sheffield and David Hunt at Salem, NJ High School and earned Classic League first-team honors. A projected Human Services major, he is the son of Herbert and Terry Woodard of Salem NJ.

Presented in memory of Fr. Freddie, one of the most staunch supporters of athletics in his long association with the College, the Rev. Alfred R. Berthiaume, A.A. '32 Memorial Awards are presented to the student-athletes who best exhibit the personality of the Rev. Berthiaume and "go above and beyond" in all areas of competition and leadership.



Senior lefthander LAUREN SYMONICK (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) is the first two-time winner of the Berthiaume Award having won it last year. She finished with an 11-13 overall record however pitched over half the innings amassed by the team. She led the team in wins (11), earned run average (2.72), innings (144.1), strikeouts (76), shutouts (3) and saves (2).

She served as a Greyhound's captain this past season and was the team's Most Valuable Player for Coach RALPH DELUCIA. She earned second-team all academic honors this past season after earning third-team in 2006 and second-team in 2005.

She hurled a two-hitter, shutting out nationally ranked Winona State, MN (1 0) on the team's Florida trip and later blanked Bentley (1-0) and Saint Michael's (5 0). She is the sixth member of the 200-strikeout club (260) in 447.0 innings (seventh all time) and she also set the Greyhounds' career mark for relief appearances with 46.

She pitched for Coach Ken LaChapelle at Northbridge, MA High School and is the daughter of Don Symonick and Traci Watson. She was just cited at the College's recent Honors Convocation as the premier Global Studies major. She has also been on the Student-Athlete Honor Roll all seven semesters to date (this marking period's grades are not yet available). She expects to be graduated May 17.



The two-time captain of the Greyhound's men's basketball team, senior forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) is the emotional and energetic leader of the team. He was the driving force as the team posted a 24-11 overall mark and a berth in the final of both the Northeast-10 Conference and N.C.A.A. Division II Northeast Regional finals.

Twomey averaged 12.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and shot .467 (155-for-332) from the floor, while leading the team in minutes played (1,195). He is the first forward since his coach, SERGE DEBARI '71, to have 100 assists in a season.

His most memorable game was probably the regional final against Bentley in which he personally brought the Greyhounds back from an 18-point deficit into contention (down four points) with an 18-point second-half performance (20 points overall). He scored his 1,000th career point at Pace (2-26-08).

He reached double-figures 23 times (56 career) and had five double-figure rebound games as well. He was named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll seven times and earned conference third-team all-star honors. He has already indicated that he will play again in 2008-09 as a postgraduate (missed all but two games as a freshman due to injury).

Twomey played high school ball for Coach Keith Woods at Groton-Dunstable where his team finished 84-10. He scored 1,712 points and was a three-time Lowell Sun Player-of-the-Year and two-time Worcester Telegram & Gazette Super Teamer.

A Management major he expects to be graduated May 17. He is the son of Joe and Gilda Twomey of Groton.

The William Cating '69 Memorial Awards, presented in memory of the former baseball/soccer manager who passed away in 1969, go to the student-athletes, both male & female, who best exemplify the enthusiasm of Bill Cating and considered "most coachable" by their coach.



Senior captain/attack JENNA GOLDSTEIN (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) is one of the premier players in Greyhound's women's lacrosse history. In her final game she scored a season high seven goals including the 100th of her career and assisted on another to lead her team to victory for Coach LINDA DRAPEAU.

Goldstein is just the third Greyhound to reach 100 goals following all-Americans Jenny Mongeau (2003-06) (188) and Karen Shaw (1998-99) (105). She finished the season with 27 goals, eight assists for 35 points and concluded her career with 101 goals, 35 assists for 136 points, second-best in Greyhounds' annals to Mongeau (188-33--221). She ended her season and career with 16 goals, 3 assists over the last three games and has played in more games (56) than anyone in Hounds' history. In her first year she set a team record with 40 goals.

She played at Duxbury High for Coach Sue Paul, before coming to the College, helping her team win the Patriot League title. An Accounting major she expects to be graduated May 17. She is the daughter of Stephen and Hazel Goldstein of Duxbury.



Senior left wing JIM TRAHON (Needham, MA/Needham/Salisbury School) has been a major part of the offense for the Ice Dogs finishing with 40 goals, 48 assists for 88 points in 93 games in his career.

He also served as a two-time captain for Coach KEVIN ZIFCAK and was named a second-team Northeast-10 Conference all-star this past season after leading the team in goals, assists and points (10-13--23). He earned conference weekly honor roll plaudits three times this past season.

He played for Coach Dan Donato at the Salisbury School (Salisbury, CT) leading the team to the New England tournament in 2002 and 2003. Previously, he played at Needham High School leading his team into the Massachusetts Super Eight Tournament twice and earning all-Bay State League honors twice.

A Management major he expects to be graduated May 17. He is the son of John and Kathy Trahon of Needham.

The Francis J. Grimaldi '70 Memorial Award, in memory of the former baseball coach (& assistant football coach) who passed during the 1993 season, is presented to the student-athlete who best exemplifies his courage & spirit.



Basketball senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy), who averaged 9.1 points and led the Northeast-10 Conference in rebounding (9.6), while also being ranked in steals (72), assists (82), field goal accuracy (.518) and assists/turnover ratio (0.79) was named the conference's Defensive Player-of-the-Year. She also earned second-team honors for both the conference and the ECAC Division II, while helping the Greyhound women's basketball team to a record-setting 22-10 overall mark and into the semifinal of the N.C.A.A. Division II Northeast Regional Tournament.

She is the fourth Greyhound to reach both 1,000 points (1,212) and 1,000 rebounds (1,056) and merely the second to have four 200-rebound seasons. She is also one of a rare group of two-time captains for Coach KERRY PHAYRE.

She is a three-time conference all-star and earned Freshman-of-the-Year honors in 2004-05. This past season she had 11 double-figure scoring games (63 in her career) and 15 double-figure rebound games (54 career). She was named the conference Player-of-the-Week once and earned wekely honor roll status six times.

She prepped at Worcester Academy, playing for Coach Sherry Levin, and left as the school's second-leading career scorer (1,141 points). The team finished as the New England Prep runnersup in both her junior and senior seasons and she earned all-star honors three consecutive years and well as Boston Globe All Scholastic mention.

She is a Human Services major and expects to be graduated May 17. She is the daughter of Ernie, the former NBA standout with the Milwaukee Bucks, and stepmother Georgia of Worcester.

The Rev. Joseph A. Pelletier, A.A. '32 Memorial Award is presented to a person outside of the athletics department for service to the department or its student athletes above and beyond.



He has been the research librarian at the College since 1999, written a joke book, been awarded an Honorary Alumnus Award (1999) and been one of the most vocal fans at Greyhound sporting events. LARRY SPONGBERG, who came from right up the street at Wachusett Regional High, has been a fixture on this campus and one of its most popular staff members with students. He has announced his retirement at the end of the academic year.

The Al Banx Memorial Award is presented to a student for service to the department or its student-athletes above and beyond.



Two-year captain of the baseball team and the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, senior SCOTT BOYLE (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) has been a moving force as the SAAC grows as a major part of the student-athletes experience at the College. Under the staff direction of Associate Athletics Director/Senior Women's Administrator JOI IRBY, the SAAC has been involved in numerous fund-raising and charitable projects, i.e. Thanksgiving Day baskets, soup kitchens, soccer balls for the troops in Iraq, reading to grammar school students.

Boyle, whose career has been curtailed because of injury, has nonetheless been elected captain twice for Coach GEORGE REIDY. His three-run home run just last week was the big hit in a 4-0 road win over nationally ranked Franklin Pierce.

He played his high school baseball for Coach Chuck Jones at Cranston West High and earned first-team all-division honors. Boyle, a Human Services major, expects to be graduated May 17. He is the son of Tim and Cindy Boyle of Cranston, RI.
