Women's soccer: No. 4 Merrimack 2, No. 9 Assumption 0 in regional battle

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. ---Senior goalie CAITLIN STEPHAN (Northboro, MA/Algonquin) made four saves to post her third shutout as fourth-ranked Merrimack College defeated ninth-ranked Assumption College, 2-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer game here last night.

The teams were both regionally ranked by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America this past week.

Stephan outdueled Greyhound junior goalkeeper LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett) who also made four saves.

Merrimack is now 9-2-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference. The Greyhounds are now 4-5-3 and 3-4-3.

Merrimack got on the board just 9:09 into the game as senior midfielder LAURA ASBELL (Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) headed a corner kick by sophomore back JENNIFER CONWAY (Douglas, MA/Whitinsville Christian) for her third goal of the season.

The Warriors would strike for an insurance goal at 53:49 as sophomore forward CAITLIN HALL (Westminster, MA/Oakmont) scored on a header on a cross feed by freshman forward GABRIELLE GRAMPREY(Brockton, MA/Brockton). Senior back HEATHER CARR (Wakefield, RI/South Kingston) was also credited with an assist on the play.

Merrimack outshot the Greyhounds, 10-7.

Assumption host Bryant SATURDAY at 11 a.m., while the Warriors host LeMoyne SATURDAY at 1 p.m.
