Freshman Kayla Parker leads Hounds past Bridgeport, 70-42, in women's hoop action

February 6, 2007

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --- Freshman forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) led three double-figure scorers as Assumption College rolled past the University of Bridgeport, 70-42, in a non-conference women's basketball game TUESDAY at the Bruce Webster Court.

Sophomore guard BETH PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) contributed 12 points and three assists, while junior forward MEGAN URBAN(Portland, ME/Deering) added 11 points. The Greyhounds defense was once again a major contributor holding the Purple Knights to a .370 floor percentage including just .333 (making just eight-of-24 shots) in the second half. The Greyhounds domination of the board play resulted in a 15-0 advantage in second-chance points.

Urban led a balanced attack in the first half with eight points (three-for-three from the floor) as the Greyhounds shot .542 from the floor (13-of-24) en route to bulding a 33-19 advantage.

Bridgeport's SHANNON MALONE drilled a top-of-the-circle three-pointer with 11:47 left in the first half to cut the deficit to 12-11. The Greyhounds then spurted with a 20-4 run to lead by 17 points, 32-15, with 3:40 remaining to halftime.

Sophomore point guard TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) started the uprising with a steal and layin, then made a second steal and feed to Parker for an inside attempt and finally junior forward CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) connected on a third straight layin on a feed from Plasski to make it 21-11.

ANGELINA JIMENEZ then canned a wing jumper to interrupt the Hounds' surge before Gardner hit a lane jumper after a steal and feed by junior guard BRITT BISHOP (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc). Plasski hit a jumper off another Gardner steal and feed, Urban connected on a pair of free throws and an inside move and then freshman guard AMANDA SHEEHY (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) made a corner three pointer (on yet another feed from Gardner) to make it 32-15.

Two free throws by JENNIFER RUCKER just 2:09 into the second half cut the deficit to 38-26 before the Greyhounds ran the another 7-0 spurt to again dominate by 19 points at 45-26.

Parker converted two free throws, senior guard JESS PAULSON (North Providence, RI/LaSalle Academy) made a straight-away three-pointer (on a Sheehy feed) and Sheehy made both ends of a two-shot foul opportunity to make it 45-26.

The largest lead of the game was the final 28 points as Gardner connected on a jumper with 50 seconds remaining.

The Greyhounds, who have won their last two games on the road, are now 10-13 overall, while Bridgeport falls to 7-13.

Assumption is next in action Saturday afternoon at the Laska Gym, 1:30 p.m. tapoff, when they host Northeast-10 Conference rival College of Saint Rose.
