McGrath, Matysiak lead women's soccer past No. 7 St. Rose, 1-0

October 1, 2006

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior midfielder HOLLY MC GRATH (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) scored in the 83rd minute and junior keeper LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett) made four saves to post the shutout as Assumption College defeated the seventh-ranked and previously undefeated College of Saint Rose, 1-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer game SUNDAY at the Multi-Sports Stadium.

The Golden Knights were ranked No. 1 in last week's New England regional and No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) polls. They were the last unbeaten team in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Golden Knights are now 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

The Greyhounds are now 4-4-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the conference. They are now tied with Stonehill College for the eighth and final playoff spot. Assumption and Stonehill played to a 0-0 overtime tie earlier in the year, however, the Greyhounds now have a win (St. Rose) and a tie (UMass Lowell) over the top two teams in the conference standings to give them the tiebreaker for the moment. Stonehill was beaten by Saint Rose (2-3, ot) and have yet to play UMass Lowell.

The game-winner came off an indirect kick as senior defender SARAH WEBSTER (Fairfield, CT/Ridgefield) took the kick and McGrath headed the pass into the upper left corner for her first goal of the season.

For Matysiak it was her third shutout this season and extended her record to 26 in her remarkable career. St. Rose goalkeeper LAUREN STEINBERG (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay), the Northeast-10 Conference statistical leader in 2006 -- 0.42 goals-against average in 853 minutes and a conference-leading nine shutouts, posted three saves. Matysiak and Steinberg traded zeroes in 2005 -- the teams played a pair of double-overtime scoreless ties. The teams played 325 consecutive minutes against each other dating back to 2004 with no goals scored.

The Greyhounds are at Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack College (8-21, 5-2-1) WEDNESDAY at 7 p.m. St. Rose hosts Bryant University (8-4-1, 5-3-1) at 4:15, also on Wednesday.
