PROVIDENCE, RI --- The Assumption College doubles-team of sophomore STEVE TLUMACKI (Holliston, MA/Holliston) and freshman TOMAS NOWAK (Medfield, MA/Medfield) defeated three Division I teams to win the fourth flight doubles championship this weekend at the Northeast Invitational Tennis Tournament hosted at Brown University. Tlumacki and Nowak defeated pairs from Colgate (8-3), Fairleigh-Dickinson (8-2) and finally Villanova (8-3) to annex the title. Overall the Greyhounds, who have won 104 consecutive matches and eight straight Northeast-10 Conference championships, finished with a 16-11 singles mark an 5-6 double record---all against Division I opposition. Assumption College was the ONLY Division II team in the tournament. Another freshman COLLIN VERO-CASSAVANTE (Rutland, VT/Rutland) lost in the championship singles match of the fifth flight, while Nowak advanced to the semifinal of the seventh flight. Senior captain MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona) finished 2-1 and won the fifth-place award in the second flight . . . junior ANTONIO RECALDE (Ciudad del Este, Paraguay/San Isidro Labrador) won the ninth-place match and finished 3-1 in first flight competition. His only loss was to fellow countryman Pedro Genovese of Marist College and Asuncion, Paraguay, 5-7, 3-6 . . . Tlumacki finished 3-1 overall and won ninth place in the sixth flight. In the third flight senior DAVID MARSHALL (Newington, CT/Kingswood Oxford) won the 13th-place award as did senior DAN DOENGES (Rutland, VT/Rutland) in the eighth-flight. The Hounds are next in action hosting the University of Montreal Saturday, September 23 in an exhibition match and at Southern New Hampshire University Sunday, September 24 in a Northeast-10 Conference match.
