Greyhounds mens tennis ups Northeast-10 win streak to amazing 111 consecutive with wins over Bentley, Pace

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Senior captain MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona) (pictured right) continued his assault on the Assumption College individual record book leading the Greyhounds past Northeast-10 Conference rival Bentley College, 8-1, in men's tennis action here TUESDAY.

On Thursday junior ANTONIO RECALDE (Ciudad del Este, Paraguay/San Isador Labrador) led the Greyhounds past Pace University, 9-0, at the Paxton Tennis Center. Recalde won his second straight match at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0 this time defeating Pace's top player PAUL KOSINSKI.


With the victories the Greyhounds, ranked No. 40 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association National poll, have now won 111 consecutive matches against Northeast-10 Conference opponents dating back to the 1997-98 season. It is the longest win streak in the conference's history regardless of sport.

The Greyhounds, ranked fourth in the ITA East poll, are now 10-0 overall, 8-0 in conference play---in familiar position in first place. Bentley, ranked eighth in the ITA East, is now 10-9 overall and 9-2 in the conference. Assumption has won crucial conference matches against then-undefeated Stonehill (8-1) and now once beaten Bentley to assume control of first place. Pace is now 6-8 and 5-5.

The team has a busy upcoming schedule, weather permitting, hosting Saint Anselm (Friday), playing at American International (Saturday) and hosting Bryant (Sunday). The Northeast-10 Conference playoffs---won by the Greyhounds every year since 1998---are slated for Wednesday (18th), Saturday (21st) and Sunday (22nd) of next week. The N.C.A.A. regionals are slated for May 3, 4, and 5.

Stopp, ranked No. 11 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East singles rankings improved his career singles record to 56-3 (.949) and his career doubles mark to 59-4 (.937) . . . the highest winning percentages in the storied history of the sport at the College.

Stopp playing Recalde---the third ranked doubles tandem in the ITA East latest release---defeated the talented Falcons duo of GREG AVOLA and GREG MALOOMIAN, 8-6. They followed with an 8-3 romp over Pace's DIEGO PALACIOS and VISHAL MOORJANI.

In singles play Stopp improved his record to 9-0 defeating Bentley's Avola, 7-5, 7-5 in a grueling match and followed with a workman-like 6-2, 6-3 romp over Palacios Thursday. Recalde, meanwhile, is now 8-1 overall with a 6-0, 6-0 romp at No. 1 singles vs. Bentley's GREG MALOOMIAN and his win over Kosinski.
