Mike Molk goal leads Greyhounds past Saint Anselm 12-11 in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse overtime thrillerMarch 31, 2007
MANCHESTER, NH --- Sophomore MIKE MOLK (Danvers, MA/Danvers) scored 40 seconds into overtime as Assumption College defeated Saint Anselm College, 12-11, in a Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse game here SATURDAY. The Greyhounds, who defeated conference rival Bentley College, 7-6, in double overtime Wednesday, scored two man-up goals in the final five minutes of regulation to rally from an 11-9 deficit to set up the overtime finish. Assumption converted four of nine man-up opportunities in the game. The game mark only the second time in Greyhounds history they have played back-to-back overtime games. The 1993 team played three games back-to-back-to-back beating Western New England (11-10), Clark (12-11) and losing to American International (10-11). Sophomore midfielder KYLE MC KAY (Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken) (PHOTO MIDDLE RIGHT) led the Greyhounds with three goals, while junior midfielder BRANDON MACNEIL (Surrey, BC/Delta Secondary) ended with four assists. Freshman attack KEVIN KLASKIN (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian) (2-2--4), senior midfielder PETER REYNOLDS (Hamden, CT/Hamden) (2-0-2), Molk (2-1-3) were also key contributors on offense. Junior goalkeeper CHRIS BIRD (North Andover, MA/St. John's Prep) (PHOTO BOTTOM RIGHT) made 14 saves for the Greyhounds while junior midfielder DONNIE BOWERS (Essex, VT/Essex) (PHOTO TOP RIGHT) contributing with eight ground balls and won 18 of 24 faceoffs.
The overtime started with Bowers winning the opening faceoff---the Greyhounds won that battle 26-7---and freshman midfielder MATT FLETCHER (Peterborough, NH/Contoocook Valley) picking up a ground ball with 3:48 remaining. Molk scored his fifth goal of the season on a shot 20-feet in front of Hawks goalkeeper ANDREW ROY on a nice feed from MacNeil. When Saint Anselm's KRIS MURPHY scored on a feed from MATT O'CONNELL with 6:27 left the Hawks were in command 11-9. From that point the Greyhounds earned eight ground balls to the home team's two and Bowers won all four of his team's faceoffs, The Greyhounds crawled back into contention adding a man-up goal by Peter Reynolds off an assist from Molk. Roy made the first save off a shot by Molk however McKay retrieved the ball for the Greyhounds on a ground ball pickup to set up the goal at 4:52. The equalizer came just 35 seconds later as Kevin Klaskin scored his fifth goal of the season on a rebound from a shot by senior attack NEIL DONNELLY (Boylston, MA/St. John's). The Greyhounds moved to a quick 3-0 lead and 4-2 advantage at the end of the first period. Junior attack ALEX ROSSI (Edgartown, MA/Martha's Vineyard) scored 2:36 into the game and Kevin Klaskin followed just 36 seconds later---both unassisted goals. McKay scored 35 seconds later on a feed from junior midfielder MATT KLASKIN (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian) to make it 3-0.
Saint Anselm's MIKE MC CLAIN put the Hawks on the board with 10:13 left in the period before Molk made it 4-1 on a man-up goal from Kevin Klaskin. McClain's second of the period made it 4-2. Saint Anselm scored the only two goals of the second period as RYAN MCDONALD and Murphy scored even strength goals. In the third period Peter Reynolds, Matt Klaskin and Donnelly scored for the Greyhounds however Saint Anselm got four to lead 8-7 entering the final period. McKay started the period on a bright note for the Greyhounds scoring his third and fourth goals of the season on feeds from Rossi and MacNeil respectively as the visitors moved in front 9-8. Saint Anselm then got three straight to set the stage for the Greyhounds late-game heroics. Assumption is now 2-3 overall and 2--2 in the conference, while Saint Anselm falls to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference. The Greyhounds host non-conference rival Molloy, NY College SUNDAY at 1 p.m.
