DiGiulio, Uola lead Ice Dogs to 3-3 overtime tie with Curry; await Northeast-10 playoff scenarioFebruary 16, 2007
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman goalkeeper JAMIE DIGIULIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton, NH School) made 39 saves to lead Assumption College to a 3-3 overtime tie with powerful Curry College in non-conference ice hockey action SATURDAY night at the Buffone Rink. Another freshman, left wing ATTE UOLA (Turku, Finland/Holderness School, NH) (PICTURED RIGHT) scored the tying goal with 1:27 left in regulation on a feed from junior center MATT PAGET (Hingham, MA/Hingham/Winchendon School). Uola is the leading scorer (and eighth overall) among freshmen in the Northeast-10 Conference (11-11 -22 points) The 39 saves tied a season-high for DiGiullio, who lowered his goal-against average to 4.28 and improved his save percentage to .889 this week. He shutout crosstown rival Worcester State College (5-0) Thursday. The teams battled to a scoreless deadlock after one period as DiGiullio (13 saves) and Curry College goalkeeper ANDREW LISI (6 saves) were difference. In the second period however the Colonels struck for two quick goals---just 43 seconds apart---as BILL MC CREARY (11th goal) and EDDIE CHLANDA (14th goal) beat DiGiulio. The Ice Dogs however held the territorial edge for the remainder of the period and scored two goals to deadlock the game. Junior left wing JOHN ROUTHIER (Malden, MA/Malden Catholic/Winchendon School) scored his sixth of the season on a feed from sophomore SEAN STAID (Peabody, MA/St. Mary's/Northfield-Mt. Hermon) at 9:54. A little over four minutes late Staid slid his sixth goal---and third in his last two games---past Lisi to tie it at 2-2. Senior captain DAN SURETTE (Woburn, MA/Woburn)---playing the final home game in his career---and freshman JAMES CAPULLI (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy/Williston-Northampton) assisted. In the third period the Colonels again outshot the Ice Dogs however the team traded single goals. Curry's JEREMY HMURA scored his sixth of the season midway through the period (10:16) shorthanded on a nice feed from McCreary (25th assist) and SEAN SYLVESTER to give the Colonels the lead. Uola evened things at 18:33. In the overtime period each team traded three shots. Assumption is now 6-17-2---4-4-2 over their last 10 games---and Curry is 15-8 2 headed into the E.C.A.C. Northeast playoffs this week. The Ice Dogs (6-17-2, 0-4-1) begin Northeast-10 Conference playoff action on-the-road SATURDAY, February 24. Stonehill College (2-0-1) plays in the both of the remaining games in Northeast-10 Conference competition. They host Saint Michael's (3-1) Tuesday and play at Saint Anselm (3-1) Thursday. Southern New Hampshire (3-2) and Franklin Pierce (1-4) have completed their conference seasons. Playoff scenarios: Stonehill loses both games: Ice Dogs would play at Southern New Hampshire; Stonehill wins both games: Ice Dogs would play at Saint Anselm; Stonehill splits (beats Saint Michael's): Ice Dogs would play at Saint Michael's; Stonehill splits (beats Saint Anselm); Ice Dogs would play at Southern New Hampshire.
