WORCESTER, Mass. --- The Assumption College men's golf team has received, as expected, its second N.C.A.A. Division II super regional tournament berth. The Greyhounds are one of 80 teams and 50 individuals who were selected to participate in the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships super regionals. The Northeast region Super Regional includes five Northeast-10 Conference representatives, Pace, Bryant, LeMoyne, Bentley and Assumption along with St. Thomas Aquinas (Sparkhill, NY), Post (Waterbury, CT), Goldey-Beacom (Wilmington, DE). The Northeast Super Regional will be hosted by West Liberty State College at the Speidel Golf Club in Wheeling, West Virginia on May 7-8-9. The five super regional tournaments encompass the current 10 regions. The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not with a team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the national final scheduled for May 22-25 at The Meadows in Allendale, Michigan, hosted by Grand Valley State University. Ten additional teams will earn berths to the finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional at the finals. Head coach TIM BIBAUDis now in his 12th year with the Greyhounds. The team is led by the Hounds 'Terrific Threesome' of sophomore captains . . . TYLER JOHNSON (Holden, MA/Wachusett), ROB YOUNKER (Waltham, MA/Waltham) and JAMIE FARREA (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth). All three have medal averages under 80 . . . Younker (78.8), Johnson (79.0) and Farrea (79.8). Johnson, who enjoyed a superb fall season, carded two rounds of 70 (second lowest in Hounds golf history) and turned in a two-round record 70 72--142 in the E.C.A.C. tournament to earn all-East honors with a second-place finish. Younker's 77-41--109 (rain-shortened event) earned him a third-place finish and first-team all-conference honors. Also in the mix are senior PATRICK HUBLEY (Auburn, MA/Millbury) and freshmen DAVID TURNBLOM (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's) and TYLER CLEARY (Newington, CT/Newington). The Greyhounds finished fourth in the Northeast-10 Conferencen tournament, fifth in the E.C.A.C. Division II Championship and 17th of 43 teams in the all-division New England Intercollegiate Golf championships. They won the first annual Assumption College Shootout as four golfers posted sub-80 rounds at the Blackstone Country Club. The Greyhounds played in the 2002 Super Regional at River Greens Golf Club in West Lafayette, OH. Previously, only six-time Massachusetts Amateur Golf-of-the-Year Frank Vana '86 and Patrick Dunn '89 had played in an N.C.A.A. event for the Greyhounds, both as individual performers. |
