Matt Stopp, Kristin Cannon Premier Senior Student-Athletes for Greyhounds

April 30, 2007

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Five outstanding young people took center stage as Assumption College honored its student-athletes at the department's annual awards ceremony Monday, April 30, 2007, at the College's annual Student-Athlete Awards Reception in the Andrew Laska Gymnasium. Women's basketball coach Kerry Phayre again served as Mistress of Ceremonies.

The Rev. Armand Desautels, A.A. Memorial Awards are presented in the name of the former President of the College (1952-64), to the premier senior male & female student-athletes. The candidates must combine academic achievement with athletic prowess and possess impeccable character.

Captain (in both his junior and senior years) MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona) has been a major cog as the men's tennis team coached by JOHN IPPOLITO has dominated the Northeast-10 Conference increasing its record conference win streak to an amazing 117 consecutive. The team has posted an amazing 68-7 overall record including 43-0 in conference regular-season and 12-0 in conference post-season. The team won 65 of its 69 regular-season matches in his career.

As the Greyhounds enter play in their eighth straight N.C.A.A. regional tournament (May 3-4) he has posted a 60-3 career singles record (currently fifth all time) with the best won-loss percentage (.952) in team history. His doubles record is 65-4 (currently sixth best in Hounds' annals), also with the best won-loss percentage (.942).

Stopp has earned first-team all-conference honors in both singles and doubles in each of his four year. In addition he has earned Northeast-10 Conference all academic in each of the three years of the awards existence along with ITA all academic mention. He was named CoSIDA/ESPN academic all-region in 2005-06 and is prime candidate to repeat this year. He is also a candidate for an N.C.A.A. postgraduate scholarship.

He is also among the top students at the College earning a 3.90 cumulative grade point average and is expected to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics on May 12. He earned a position on the College's Dean's List in seven straight semesters (the 2007 spring grades have yet to be finalized) and also a departmental Director's Citation in all seven previous marking periods. He was one of just three student athletes to post a 4.00 grade point average in the fall semester and was honored at the College's recent Academic Honors Convocation with the highest GPA in his major.

He is the son or Ron and Anita Stopp of Altoona, PA. He has indicated interest in the ATP satellite pro tennis tour before settling on a choice of graduate school.

Captain of the women's soccer team and its top defender KRISTIN CANNON (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) has been a mainstay for Coach NEIL STAFFORD as the Greyhounds have become a regional power with two N.C.A.A. regional tournament and two Northeast-10 Conference championship game appearances.

She has started more games (77) than anyone in Hounds' soccer history and is fourth on the games played (78) list. She finished her career with two goals, three assists for seven points.

Defensively, the Greyhounds led the conference twice in her career in least goals allowed. In 2004 and 2005 the Greyhounds allowed just 36 goals in 44 games while earning their way into the national rankings and the N.C.A.A. regional tournament.

The team finished 15-4-4 in second place in 2005 and following a 15-6-0 record and third-place finish in 2004. She was named a first-team Northeast-10 Conference and New England coaches association all-star as both a junior and senior. She earned academic all-conference honors this past season.

She is also a six-time Dean's List student and earned a place on the department's Student-Athlete Honor Roll six times in seven semesters. She carries a 3.31 cumulative grade point average and is expected to be graduated May 12 with a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing. She is the daughter of David and Lee Cannon of East Greenwich, RI.

The Andrew Laska Awards are presented in the name of the former men's basketball coach (1951-67), golf coach (1959-86) and Director of Athletics (1956-86), to both a male & female student-athlete, determined to be most dominant at the College for the year. Athletics ability, leadership and character are major determinants.

Junior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy), who was named to the Northeast-10 Conference second-team all stars and earned weekly honor status an amazing 10 times, led the Greyhounds into the Northeast-10 Conference playoff second round.

She averaged 12.2 points-per-game (second on the team and 14th in the NE-10) and team-leading 9.8 rebounds (second in the NE-10) and 81 steals (second in the NE-10). She also shot 126-for-216 from the floor (.583)---leading the conference for Coach KERRY PHAYRE.

She scored a career-best 25 points in a win over Saint Rose and had three other 20-point performances. She finished with 19 double-figure scoring games (52 career) and 14 double-figure rebound games (39 career).

In her career, she is on the verge of becoming the fourth Greyhound to score 1,000 points with 1,000 rebounds. She will enter her senior year season with 975 points and 807 rebounds (currently ranked third). She is also the first player in Hounds' history to attempt 150 or more free throws in a season three times. She is one of seven to make over 300 (313-for-567) in a career and one of only four to attempt 500.

She was the conference Freshman-of-the-Year in 2004-05 and earned first-team honors as a sophomore.

She is the daughter of Ernie and Tracey (deceased) Floyd (stepmother Georgia) of Worcester. She is a Social Rehabilitation major

Junior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian), one of the premier defensive ends in the region, is also one of the defensive statistical leaders in the Northeast-10 Conference. He earned first-team all-conference, first-team all Worcester Area, E.C.A.C. Division II honorable mention, d2football.com all-region, and Don Hansen's Football Gazette all-region. He was also named the Worcester Area Football Defensive Player-of-the-Year.

Kelly was among the conference leaders with 14.5 tackles-for-loss, 9.0 quarterback sacks and 20 quarterback hurries. He finished with 29 solo tackles, 18 assists for 47 total tackles. He also had four break-ups, four passes defended, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble for Coach CORY BAILEY. He finished 12th nationally in quarterback sacks and 36th in tackles-for-loss.

He was particularly effective in the Greyhounds' first win over conference rival Bentley College (14-10) since 1985 with 6-1--7 tackles including three quarterback sacks, three hurries and a forced fumble. His tackle of Bentley quarterback John White on a fourth-down play at the Assumption three-yard line with five seconds left preserved the victory. He also had two sacks in the Hounds' shutout win over Pace (19-0) on Senior Day.

Also an outstanding student, Kelly (an Accounting major) was named to the Northeast-10 Conference all-academic team and has six times earned a spot on the department's Student-Athlete Honor Roll, the last two with the Director's Citation for a GPA over 3.50.

The son of Mark and Elaine Kelly, he has been elected to serve as one of three captains along with his brother Josh (the opposite defensive end) and Mike Senella in 2008.

Junior tennis standout ANTONIO RECALDE (Ciudad del Este, Paraguay/San Isador Labrador) was named the Northeast-10 Conference Vernon Cox Memorial Player-of-the-Year and earned first-team all-conference status at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles (playing with senior/captain MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona).

Recalde was also Northeast-10 Conference Player-of-the-Week five times and earned a spot on the weekly honor roll six times. He is ranked 10th in the latest I.T.A. East singles ratings and third in doubles (with Stopp) for Coach JOHN IPPOLITO.

He led the Greyhounds to a perfect 16-0 regular-season overall record and helped the team extend its amazing conference win streak to 117 consecutive matches dating back to April 15, 1998. The team won its ninth straight Northeast 10 Conference regular-season and subsequent postseason championships and is scheduled to play in its eighth straight N.C.A.A. regional tournament May 3-4 at Stonehill College. The team is ranked 40th in the latest I.T.A. national poll and fourth in the East region.

Recalde posted a 13-1 overall record (11-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference) at No. 1 singles this year improving his career record to 41-5. His doubles record, playing primarily with Stopp, was 14-1 overall and 10-1 in the conference. He is now 51-4 in his three-year career in doubles.

He has been named first-team all-conference in both singles and doubles in all three years and was the conference Freshman-of-the-Year in 2005.

He is the son of Antonio and Carmen Recalde of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay and is an International Business major.

The Freshman-of-the-Year Awards are presented to both a male & female student-athlete in his/her freshman year, determined to be most dominant at the College for the year. Athletics ability, leadership & character are major determinants.

Freshman forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) earned a spot on the Northeast-10 Conference all-freshman team. She was named to the weekly honor roll three times and was the Freshman-of-the-Week once.

She averaged 10.5 points and 4.1 rebounds and shot .517 from the floor (107-for-207). Her best outing came against Merrimack with 22 points and 13 rebounds in a Greyhound's victory. She ended the season with 15 double-figure scoring games, including 11 of her final 12 games.

The Greyhounds finished the season with a 13-16 overall record earning a position in the conference playoffs for the 11th straight year under Coach KERRY PHAYRE.

She is a daughter of Steve and Charleen Parker of Sanford, ME. She is a proposed History/Elementary Education major with interest in a teaching career.

Freshman middle linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) became the first freshman in Greyhounds' varsity history to record over 100 tackles. Zitzmann, who finished with 40-64--104 tackles, led the Northeast-10 Conference in that category and was named a second-team all-star for Coach CORY BAILEY.

He also had five tackles-for-loss (15 yards), one quarterback sack, one interception, six passes defended, four quarterback hurries. He finished seventh in the national N.C.A.A. Division II statistics in tackles. He has six double-figure tackle games including a season-best 7-7--14 at Bryant and 4-9--13 at Division I-A Nicholls State, LA.

He earned Worcester Area Football Freshman-of-the-Year honors and Don Hansen's Football Gazette all-region honors. He was on the conference weekly honor roll twice.

He is the son of John and Anita Zitzmann of Pinellas Park, FL and is a proposed Computer Science major.

Presented in memory of Fr. Freddie, one of the most staunch supporters of athletics in his long association with the College, the Rev. Alfred R. Berthiaume, A.A. '32 Memorial Awards are presented to the student-athletes who best exhibit the personality of the Rev. Berthiaume and "go above and beyond" in all areas of competition and leadership.

Junior lefthanded pitcher LAUREN SYMONICK (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) has been workhorse pitcher for softball Coach RALPH DELUCIA. She has already worked 108.2 innings with 23 appearances including 14 games started this season. Her 2.96 earned run average is among the conference leaders.

Earlier this month she was named to the Northeast-10 Conference all academic team for the second straight season. She has already been elected a co captain for the 2008 softball team.

She is the daughter of Don Symonick and Traci Watson of Northbridge. A Global Studies major, she is a outstanding student having earned a spot on the department's Student-Athlete Honor Roll six times including a Director's Citation this past fall for a GPA over 3.50.

The most unheralded position on a soccer field, and perhaps its most important, is the sweeperback. The Greyhounds AUSTIN PRETE (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) was among the premier performers in the Northeast-10 Conference as a first-year sweeperback.

His tenacious style of play and aggressive nature were vital as the Greyhounds soccer team battled youth and inexperience throughout the year---the roster had nine freshmen playing significant minutes.

The sweeper is expected to be more fluid that other defenders who mark a specific offensive player. A sweeper is asked to read the game and is required to have solid ball control skills and passing ability. Being the last line of defense in front of the goalkeeper, the sweeper is, in effect, the team leader on the field.

Austin made 17 starts for the Greyhounds and Coach MIKE KULAS and finished with two goals, four points statistically. It was the non-statistical part of his game that makes him an ideal candidate for an "above and beyond" award as a first-year player.

His obvious athletics ability and playing skill along with his physical style made opponents certainly remember him after each game. His teammates have looked to him for leadership and they have elected him as one of their team captains for next year as a sophomore---a rarity in today's collegiate sports world.

Prete made 17 starts for the Greyhounds and Coach MIKE KULAS. He finished with two goals, four points for the season.

He is the son of Paul and Cindy Prete of Glastonbury. He is a proposed Accounting major.

The William Cating '69 Memorial Awards, presented in memory of the former baseball/soccer manager who passed away in 1969, go to the student-athletes, both male & female, who best exemplify the enthusiasm of Bill Cating and considered "most coachable" by their coach.

Senior midfielder/captain HOLLY MC GRATH (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) earned third-team Northeast-10 Conference honors and N.E.W.I.S.A. first-team as one of the backbones of the Greyhounds' defense for Coach NEIL STAFFORD.

McGrath also had two game-winning goals this past season scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win against Saint Rose and both goals in a 2-1 win over Saint Michael's. In fact, her last five goals have won or tied games for the Greyhounds dating back to the 2005 season. She scored the game-winner in the Hounds' 1-0 win over Massachusetts Lowell in the 2005 N.C.A.A. regional semifinals. She ended her career with 10 goals, 9 assists for 29 points in 76 games.

She is the daughter of Barry and Grace McGrath of Naugatuck, CT. Also a fine student she has been a member of the department's Student-Athlete Honor Roll five times. She expects to be graduated May 12 with a Bachelor in English.

Freshman goalkeeper JAMIE DI GIULIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton School, NH) was the backbone of the ice hockey team's late-season surge into the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs. In 20 games (16 starts) he posted a 4.25 goals-against average with an .891 save percentage (581 saves) for Coach KEVIN ZIFCAK in 1,003 minutes (only the 11th Ice Dog goalie with over 1,000 minutes).

His season-best 54-save effort at Saint Michael's led the Ice Dogs to their first ever on-the-road conference playoff win. He was named Northeast-10 Conference Player-of-the-Week once, Northeast-10 Conference Goalie-of-the-Week twice, Northeast-10 Conference Freshman-of-the-Week three times, and E.C.A.C. Northeast Goalie-of-the-Week once. He won all three Northeast-10 major weekly awards (player, goalie, freshman) . . . shutting out Worcester State (5-0) with 29 saves, backboning a 3-3 overtime tie with nationally ranked Curry College with 39 saves and then beating Saint Michael's in the playoffs.

He is a the son of Joe and Nadine DiGiulio of Peabody, MA and is a proposed Management major.

The Francis J. Grimaldi '70 Memorial Award, in memory of the former baseball coach (& assistant football coach) who passed during the 1993 season, is presented to the student-athlete who best exemplifies his courage & spirit.

The 2007 recipient is women's basketball student assistant MEGHAN HEFFERNAN (Clinton, MA/Ellington, CT). She is the first non-student-athlete to win the award.

Heffernan, who served as student-assistant for three sports (soccer, softball and basketball) at Ellington, CT High, was a four-year student-assistant for Coach KERRY PHAYRE.

She expects to be graduated May 12 with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting.

The Rev. Joseph A. Pelletier, A.A. '32 Memorial Award is presented to a person outside of the athletics department for service to the department or its student athletes above and beyond.

The 2007 recipient is Director of Financial Aid for the College KAREN PUNTILLO. The lifeline for all the coaches on the Greyhound staff, she has been very available and helpful as the athletic staff completes the recruiting and enrollment process for its teams.

She was graduated from the College in 1999 with a Bachelors of Arts in Accounting and received her M.B.A. from Clark University. She is married to Vito Puntillo and has a son Harrison (2). They reside in Shrewsbury.

The Al Banx Memorial Award is presented to a student for service to the department or its student-athletes above and beyond.

The 2007 recipients are senior rowing captain KERIN MURRAY (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) and senior media relations assistant STEVE DIVITTO (Milford, MA/Milford).

Murray, who has rowed previously for the Community Rowing, Inc. of Boston and the Amoskeag Rowing Club of Manchester, NH, has been a major factor in organization and team fund-raising, while also serving as the student leader for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. A SAAC is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. It also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect athletes' lives.

She is the daughter of Jim and Pat Murray of Londonderyr, NH. She expects to be graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology May 12.

Divitto, a three-year member of the baseball team before a career-ending shoulder injury, has been a mainstay in the athletics media relation office for four years. He has served as the primary production assistant with all the Greyhounds webcasts of football and basketball games for four years. He has also done game management duties including scoring, timing and announcing at home games.

DiVitto is the son of Bob and Lynn DiVitto of Milford, MA. He expects to be graduated May 12 with a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communications.
