Worcester, Mass. (April 5) -- The Assumption College Department of Athletics held its Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Breakfast on Friday morning. At the breakfast, the Department honored the top student-athlete from each athletic program, as well as honoring the Faculty Member of the Year, as voted by a committee of student-athletes and athletic department administrators.
The student-athletes who were honored boasted the top cumulative grade point average to date in their respective sports. Each student-athlete was asked to bring one faculty member with them to also be recognized at the event.
“I am extremely proud of the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes and I am pleased that we were able to recognize them this morning with their coaches, professors and other members of the Assumption community,” said Nick Smith, director of athletics. “They serve as the benchmark for what our goals are academically for each of our student-athletes and I am excited to see the continued success in the classroom by each of them.”
The Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Breakfast is done in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day, which will take place on Saturday, April 6th. Entering its 26th year, National Student-Athlete Day is recognized nationally and gives colleges and universities an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide that excel in the classroom, on the playing fields and in the community.
“This new event is a celebration of academic excellence and we are looking to continue to build on this tradition for years to come,” said Smith.
In addition to the student-athletes who were recognized, the Faculty Member of the Year Award was given by Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President and women’s soccer senior Molly Kessler and was awarded to accounting professor Dan Jones of the Business Studies program.
Jones, who has been an accounting professor at Assumption since 2005, is an avid college athletics fan and a tireless supporter of the Greyhounds both on and off the field. A familiar face at countless Assumption home and road events, Jones regularly congratulates student-athletes around campus on big wins or other accomplishments and his support is felt by the student-athletes, staff and coaches.
