For the second time in 10 years SERGE DEBARI took the assignment of rebuilding the Assumption College men's basketball program. One of the outstanding players (1967-71) and later assistant coach (1973-80) and head coach (1995-99) for the Greyhounds, he begins his second tour of duty as head coach. DeBari played basketball at the College for Coach Joe O'Brien '57---the former Executive Director of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame---and earned all-New England honors three times. He captained the 1970-71 U.P.I. national champions and was named the Most Valuable Player for both the 1968-69 and 1970-71 teams. He left the College as its career scoring leader with 1,493 points (currently 14th) and is still included in the career lists for assists (318) and free throws (471). The team posted an enviable 74-21 record in his four years as a player. He was elected to the College's Alumni-Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978. DeBari began his coaching career at Fairfield (1971-72)---under former Hound coach and all-America player Fred Barakat '61---as an assistant coach and moved to Dartmouth College (1972-73)---under yet another former Hound standout, Tom O'Connor '68---the following year before returning to his alma mater in 1973-74 as assistant men's basketball coach, physical education instructor, intramural director and recreation programs director. He also served as the head men's basketball coach at Babson College (1980-95) compiling a school-best 224-151 won-loss record---winning sixty percent of his games! The program, prior to his arrival, had not enjoyed a winning season for 15 years. He also coached men's tennis at Babson (1980-86) and holds school records for winning percentage in both sports. Babson College basketball teams competed in six E.C.A.C. (1984, 86, 87, 90, 91, 93) basketball tournaments and two N.C.A.A. regional tournaments (1992, 95). The 1992 team was ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 5 nationally and was the host and top-seed for the N.C.A.A. New England regional. That team also lays claim as being the only Division III team in New England to own a victory over a Division I team in the decade. The team won 20-or-more games in four of his last five years. He was named the New England Basketball Coaches Association and N.A.B.C. New England Coach-of-the-Year in both 1986 and 1992 and the Constitution Athletic Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1995. He was the New England Tennis Coaches Association Coach-of-the-Year in 1986. He is also a former President of the New England Collegiate Basketball Coaches Association. Returning to the Greyhounds in 1995, he took over a program that had struggled and in the third year led his team to a 23-10 overall record and the 1998 Northeast-10 tournament title and advanced to the tournament championship game in 1999. He was awarded the Doggie Julian Award for contributions to New England collegiate basketball in 1999.
