STEPHEN F. LINDBERG '73

Hockey, Football

A standout two-sport student-athlete, STEVE LINDBERG was one of the original ?club' football players and also a standout defenseman for the hockey team. He later served as an assistant coach with football, and was head hockey coach from 1977 83.

His overall hockey record finished at 69-51, still second only to present coach Bill Bowes. He coached the first post-season tournament team in 1982 as the Greyhounds finished 17-4 overall and 14-3 in the E.C.A.C. He is merely the second football player to be inducted, following all-America center Jim Grealis '82.

His top player, Hall of Famer Bob LoConte '83 won the 1982 Hobey Baker Award as the premier Player-in-the-Nation and became the first 200-point scorer in Greyhound history. LoConte centered the premier line in the College's history, the well-known ?Arlington Connection' with Jerry Rochon '83 and Tom Connors '83.

Lindberg's final contribution came with the recruitment of Hall of Fame defenseman Tom Schofield '87---the first 200-point defenseman in Division II-III history.

In football, Lindberg starred as an offensive guard and defensive tackle in the days of playing in both ways for Hall of Fame Coach Paul Cantiani '73. He was accorded all-U.P.I. Eastern Collegiate Football Conference honors in both his junior and senior years. In hockey, he started for four years as a 'defensive' defenseman for Coaches Wes Shepeluk and Ray LeMay.

He captained both sports as a senior and won the Student-Athlete Award in 1973. After graduation he played a year of professional football with the New England Colonials of the Atlantic Coast League.

He is presently the Superintendant of the North Smithfield, RI School System. He is married to the former Janice Henchey and resides in Auburn. The couple has five children: Stephen, Kristin, Alison, Joseph and Mary.
