MICHAEL E. HAYES '79 Ice Hockey One of the true super stars of ice hockey at the College in the seventies, MIKE HAYES, the former Doherty High (Worcester, MA) standout, left as the career scoring leader and a vital part of the record-setting 'White Lightning' line of 1978-79.
Hayes (19-42--61) teamed with Hall of Famer and right winger Bob Benoit (17-46--63) and left wing Paul Lamoureux (31-27--58) on the single-season most prolific line in hockey history at the College . . . the line accounted for 67 goals, 115 assists and 182 points in just 18 games . . . an incredible average of 10.2 points per game! He played for Coaches Ray LeMay (1975-77) and Hall of Famer Steve Lindberg '73 (1977-79). He finished his career with 59 goals and 92 assists for 151 points in 80 games . . . an average of over two points-per-game . . . and a shooting percentage of .190 (59 goals in 311 shots). He also left as the career assist (92) leader (currently sixth) and is one of only four players to have over 40 assists in a single season. He scored the game-tying goal in his first game in a 3-3 deadlock with WPI (12/1/75) and later registered four games with six or more points. He set the then record of seven points with four goals, three assists in a win over Clark (1/24/79) and also had three games with five assists. He captained the team in 1978-79, while his brother Jim served as an assistant coach. All three Hayes brothers Mike, Jim and Ron played at the College. Hayes was graduated from the College in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and later received his MBA from Clark University (1985). He is married to the former Anne Marie Dumphy '81 and currently resides in Newtown, Connecticut with four children, Katharine, Mike Jr., Erin and Shannon. Erin and Shannon are both champion Irish Step Dancers and have competed worldwide. He is currently a Senior Manager of Marketing Communications responsible for worldwide marketing programs with IBM and stationed in White Plains, New York. |
