MICHAEL A. BLANCHARD '79 Baseball One of the outstanding two-position players in the College's baseball history, MIKE BLANCHARD left his mark not only as a superb hitter, but as a dominating left handed pitcher.
He led the Greyhounds, coached by Bill Granahan '68, to three post-season tournaments, E.C.A.C. events in 1976 and 1977 and the program's first N.C.A.A. regional tournament in 1978. He set the Hounds' single-game record of 19 strike outs at Bryant College (4/5/79) and later led New England and the nation in batting as a senior (.511) with an amazing 47 hits in just 92 at bats. He is one of only three pitchers in Hounds' history with more strike outs (190) than innings pitched (175). In his first game with the Hounds he pitched a two-hit shutout and smacked a grand slam in a 22-0 win over Clark (4/6/76). He would later be on the short end of two close losses to powerful New Haven in 1978 . . . the first out pitched by future Cy Young Award winner Steve Bedrosian and the second as future Red Sox draft choice Michael Young made a spectacular game-saving catch in the ninth inning of the Hounds' first N.C.A.A. game. He is the 16th leading hitter (.377) in Hounds' history earning first-team all-New England and all-District honors in 1979 and also played in the annual New England All-Star game at Fenway Park. He completed his career with 118 hits in 313 at bats and an 11-9 overall mark on the mound with a 4.67 earned run average. He was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 1979 and received his Juris Doctor from Western New England School of Law in 1982. He is now a partner and head of the criminal law department with Suisman, Shapiro, Wool, Brennan, Gray and Greenberg in New London, Connecticut He is married to the former Maryellen Casalino '79 and has a son Christopher and daughter Caroline and lives in Norwich, Connecticut. |
