EDWARD V. MC DONALD Ice Hockey
One of the premier goaltenders , competitors and leaders in the history of Assumption College hockey, ED MC DONALD was the backbone of the emergence of the program as a regional power in the early 80s. The numbers speak for themselves . . . an overall 29-19 won-loss record (second in Ice Dogs' history), 50 games (sixth), 2857 minutes (sixth), 1,737 shots (sixth), 1,548 saves (sixth), .891 save percentage (second), and a 3.96 goals-against average (second). The team was 56-27 during his tenure winning their first E.C.A.C. regular-season title in history in 1981-82 and earning their first three post-season berths (1982, 1984, 1985). McDonald transferred from Salem State College and in his first year (7-2 overall) with the Ice Dogs set the seasonal mark with a .908 save percentage --- he also owns the third-best (.902 in 1984-85) and ninth-best (.890 in 1983-84) --- and goals-against average (2.73) --- his 3.51 in 1984-85 is the fifth-best. As a freshman he made his first start against crosstown rival Holy Cross --- making 37 saves in a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat. A week later he backboned the team's Wesleyan University Tournament championship beating Wesleyan (6-2) with 39 saves and Fairfield (9-3) with 40 saves. A stretch of four away games in late February cemented the Ice Dog's first E.C.A.C. title . . . he beat Worcester State (8 0) for his first career shutout . . . beat perennial power S.M.U. (4-2) with 22 saves . . . beat Bentley (4-3) in overtime with 31 saves and finished the streak with 27 saves in a 2-1 overtime win at Fitchburg State.
As a junior he again backboned the Wesleyan Tournament title drive with 55 saves in two games, beating Wesleyan (5-2) and Connecticut College (6-4). His 29 save effort over Trinity on February 11, 1984 is the last time the Ice Dogs have won a 1-0 game (only the second time in the long and storied history). In 1984-85 he opened the season with a gutty 5-4 win at S.M.U. (35 saves) --- the Ice Dogs winning on a last-second goal by Steve Tucci '86. He later blanked Amherst (4-0) with 38 saves and then beat Saint Anselm (6-5) in overtime with 39 saves. He is currently the Territory Manager for Taylor Freezer of New England in Canton, MA. He is married to the former Karen Checola '84 and has two sons, Edward and James and two daughters, Casey and Erin. |
