DAVID T. BIDWELL '79 Baseball One of the premier righthanded pitchers in Assumption College history, DAVE BIDWELL is among the career leaders in nearly every statistical category. He finished his four years with the Greyhounds with a 19-11 (third career) overall won loss record and 3.47 earned run average. He struck out 213 (seventh career) batters in 243 innings (fourth career) and walked just 73. He is also among the leaders in games pitched (43) (seventh career), games started (28) (sixth career) and complete games (21) (third career). His 84 strikeouts in 1978 are the seventh-best in a season in Hounds' history.
He is a member of the first class at Assumption College to play on four straight post-season playoff teams. The Greyhounds advanced to the E.C.A.C. tournament in 1975, 1976 and 1977 before earning their first N.C.A.A. tournament bid in 1978. The 1978 baseball team was the first non-basketball team to earn an N.C.A.A. post season bid in Hounds' history. As a freshman in 1975 he helped the team to a 15-9 overall record by compiling a 3-1 record with 3.10 earned run average. His first start was a shared (with fellow freshman Gary Ensor) 21-0 shutout of crosstown rival Clark University followed by a 12-1 win over Bryant. As a sophomore a 5-4 win over crosstown rival Holy Cross, a 1-0 gem at American International and a tough-luck 1-0 loss to Bates in the E.C.A.C. tournament were individual highlights. He finished 6-4 with a 2.62 earned run average. The 1977 team was the first 20-game winner in Hounds' baseball annals advancing to the E.C.A.C. tournament for the third straight year. They finished 20 12-1 in 1978 earning their first N.C.A.A. bid. He was the beneficiary of a pair grand slams by teammate Wayne Rogers '79 in a 17-2 opening season win at S.M.U., but a streak in mid-season proved his season highlight film. First, he defeated Amherst in a 1-0 gem on the road . . . followed with 10 strikeout (3-2) win over Hartford and then a 12-0 (10 strikeouts) over WPI. He also beat Division I Providence (10-3) with 11 strike outs. He has pitched in the Hartford Twilight League since 1975 (still going strong!) and in the Connecticut Men's Senior Baseball League since 1993. He was elected to the Manchester, CT Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. He has been employed with Kaman Aerospace Corporation (Bloomfield, CT) since 1981 in the plant protection department. He is married to the former Karen Rubino '79 and has two daughters, Kathryn and Emily. |
