ROBERT C. BENOIT '79 ICE HOCKEY
One of the finest defensemen in Ice Dogs' history, BOB BENOIT made the perfect transition to forward as a senior and along with his White Lightning' linemates rewrote the record book. He later made substantial contributions as assistant coach (1980-85) and last year rejoined the staff as a special assistant. He played for Coaches Ray LeMay (1975-77) and Hall of Famer Steve Lindberg 73 (1977-79). Benoit (17-46-63), of course, will always be remembered for numbers he amassed as a senior with linemates Paul Lamoureux 79 (31-27--58) and Mike Hayes (19-42--61). Together they accounted for 67 goals and 182 points in 19 games. They are the only three players in Ice Dog history to average 3.00 points-per-game during a season. Benoit set team records for assists (46) and points (63) in a single season. He was also the first player with over 40 assists in a season . . . and no Ice Dog has accomplished that feat since 1984-85 (Tom Schofield 42). He finished his career with 36 goals, 87 assists for 123 points, fifth at his graduation. He captained the team as both a junior and senior and was its Most Valuable Player as a senior. He still holds the Ice Dogs' record of seven assists in a game vs. M.I.T. (2/10/79). He matriculated from Arlington High where he was an all Eastern Massachusetts selection. He also served as head hockey coach at Grafton, MA High (1985-98) and led the Indians to nine postseason berths. His 87 assists are eighth on the career list, second at graduation. |
