He was the Eastern Division All-Star shortstop in 1971. After graduation he taught and coached at Douglas, MA High (1972-78), Millbury, MA High (1978-90), Sharon, MA public schools (1990-94), and Foxboro, MA public schools (1995-96) before moving to Vermont. His Douglas soccer teams were three-time District finalists and won 50 straight at one time, while his 1984 Millbury baseball team won the Massachusetts State championship. His high school team won the Connecticut state championship (1967) and he was named all-state. He was inducted into the St. Bernard's High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
