BARBARA NICKLAS '78 Basketball, Tennis, Softball One of the premier people in the overall program in formative years of women's sports at Assumption College, BARB NICKLAS played three sports... softball and basketball for Coach Rita Castagna and tennis for Coach Linda Darling. She also captained basketball and softball in her junior and senior years and tennis in her senior year. Along with fellow Hall of Famer and classmate, Joan Ladner '77, she was one of the key people as the College developed a women's athletics program from its inception in 1972-73. She was one of the first high school all-star athletes to matriculate to the College... her team having won a Shoreline Conference championship in basketball and, individually, being named all-conference in all three sports her senior year. She compiled a lifetime softball batting average of .527 (49 hits in 93 at bats) while leading the team in batting in each of the first three years of its history. She averaged 6.5 points-per-game (391 career points) as a playmaking guard in basketball. She won over 75 percent of her singles matches in tennis. Nicklas worked at the Bank of New England until 1988 leaving to to raise a family. She is married to Lane Gesner and they reside in Madison, CT with two sons, Matthew and Daniel. |
