BRIEFLY ABOUT THE GREYHOUNDS

Assumption College has had a long and unique history in sports dating back to the first baseball game in 1912. Long renown for its men's basketball program, which has garnered 29 postseason berths since 1954, the College's athletics department has always been just slightly ahead of its time.

The College competes as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in Division II. It is a charter member of the Northeast-10 Conference now with American International, Bentley, Bryant, Franklin Pierce, Le Moyne, Massachusetts Lowell, Merrimack, Pace, Saint Anselm, Saint Michael's, Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State, Southern New Hampshire and Stonehill Colleges.

Six Greyhound teams play in a new lighted multi-sports stadium with A-turf (dedicated October 1, 2005) (football, men and women's soccer, field hockey and men and women's lacrosse). Additional facilities include recently renovated baseball and softball fields and six recently resurfaced tennis courts, while the Laska Gymnasium provides seating for 2,500 as one of the premier spectator arenas in the region. The Plourde Recreation Center opened its doors in January 1993 providing students with one of the most modern and fully equipped facilities in the region.

Historically, the College is perhaps the ONLY institution in the nation that can boast two baseball Hall of Famers (Jesse Burkett and Rube Marquard) on its staff at the same time (1931-32); its former basketball coach, Joe O'Brien, was the former Executive Director of the Basketball Hall of Fame, and finally, many of its athletes have been drafted and signed by pro teams.

The mens basketball team has produced countless all-Americas, including six cited for academic work and in 2000 its Bryan Moore became the 12th player to be honored by the N.A.B.C. as an all-America. Its women's basketball program was the first regionally to offer grant-in-aids to its prospective athletes, while its Katelyn Dwyer celebrated all-America status and Northeast-10 Conference Player-of-the-Year status in 2003-04. The women gained their first two N.C.A.A. berths in 2000 and 2002.

The baseball team with nine all-Americas since 1973 has participated in six postseason tournaments and won the Northeast-10 title six times since 1981. The team plays a full fall-exhibition schedule and annually travels to Ft. Myers, Florida (spring home of the Boston Red Sox) for its spring trip.

Softball has made big strides recently winning six conference titles in the last 14 years, advancing to the N.C.A.A. playoffs 1998 and 2000 and winning the E.C.A.C. tournament in 1999. Softball also travels to Fort Myers, Florida annually (they did go to Tucson, AZ in 2003) for its southern trip, while the cross country program annually competes against one of the more prestigious Division II slates. Its Caitlyn Clark competed in the N.C.A.A. Nationals in November 2005. Clark became the first female student-athlete to participate in two N.C.A.A. individual sports in the fall of 2006 competing in the N.C.A.A. indoor track 1,500-meter event.

Ice hockey, which competed in the Northeast-10 Conference for the first time in 2003-04, has been in 18 post-season tournaments in 24 years and produced the first 200-point defenseman (Tom Schofield) in Division II history in the mid 1980s. Its Bob LoConte won the coveted Hobey Baker Award in 1981 as the nation's outstanding player.

Golf has been represented individually at the NCAA nationals twice (Pat Dunn, Frank Vana) and in 2002 and 2007 the team finished in the NCAA Super Regional. Field hockey, women's soccer, softball and men's soccer have all won the ECAC Division II Championships in the last few years. And, finally, the women's rowing team competes on one of the world's premier courses---Lake Quinsigamond, the annual host for both the Eastern Sprints and Olympic trials.
