Assumption College Weekly Sports Note Book
Grid Hounds blank NE-10 rival Pace; Beers sets record;
Basketball, Hockey teams set to open

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College's defense was the story of the game as the Greyhounds stopped Pace University, 19-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference football game here SATURDAY. The Greyhounds limited the Setters to 56 total yards overall (a record minus 38 yards rushing).

Freshman linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) led all tacklers with 3-6--9 tackles to become the first freshman in Hounds varsity history to record over 100 tackles. Zitzmann, who finished with 40-64--104 tackles, led the conference in that department. Senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) finished with two quarterback sacks (career high nine for the season) and two pressures (20 for the season).

Offensively, senior running back KEVIN L'ECUYER (Leominster, MA/Leominster) rushed 28 times for 94 yards and one touchdown, while senior placekicker MIKE TOBIN (Woburn, MA/Woburn) kicked two field goals. Senior wide receiver JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. He finished the season with 51 receptions-- a new Greyhounds' single-season mark---for 685 yards (fourth-best in Hounds history).

The Greyhounds opened the scoring in the second period converting a blocked punt into a L'Ecuyer one-yard touchdown slant. Sophomore CHRIS MARTINO (Lindcroft, NJ/Middletown South) blocked the punt recovered by sophomore defensive tackle TERRY STANFORD (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) at the Setter 33.

The Hounds would convert two third-down plays into first downs---on a freshman running back LAMMAR CASH (West Haven, CT/Notre Dame) four yard off-tackle run and a freshman quarterback MARSHALL THARPE (Irvine, CA/Santa Magarita) to junior tight end JAKE LONGENECKER (Fernandina, FL/Manchester West) eight-yard reception over-the-middle. Tobin kicked the conversion.

In the third period they drove 56 yards in five plays after a 12-yard punt return by sophomore JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood). Tharpe completed passes of 14 yards to Longenecker, 11 yards to freshman wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/North Middlesex) and, finally, for 29 yards to Beers for the score.

The Greyhounds Tobin kicked two field goals in the fourth period.

They drove 56 yards in 12 plays with senior quarterback JOE CORREIA (Melrose, MA/St. John's Prep) completing two passes to Beers for 14 and 29 yards-- both on third-down plays and L'Ecuyer scampering 14 yards to the Pace four. Tobin kicked a 21-yard field goal to cap the drive. Following the first career interception by freshman cornerback JASON VEGA (Lawrence, MA/Central Catholic) Tobin kicked a second field goal from 30 yards.

GREYHOUND NOTES: the Hounds defense limited the Setters to minus-38 yards rushing, a new team record, on 15 carries. The previous mark was -29 yards vs, Providence College (10-2-88) . . . MENS BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

LAST YEAR: the reviews for the first year in the second Serge DeBari regime were mixed. The team had four, nearly five, double-figure scorers . . . they outrebounded their opponents . . . and, they finished strong with two 'monster' wins against ranked teams down-the-stretch. But, they did lose 20 games, they did shoot just .434 from the floor and and under .300 from three-point territory for the first time in Hounds history and they averaged just 67.6 points per game.

A three-point overtime win at Mass. Lowell (82-79) orchestrated by forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) who scored 14 of his 16 points in an overtime showstopper proved to be the season highlight until the Hounds upended conference titlist Saint Anselm (81-78) at home as guard LEROY BYRON (Worcester, MA/North) was a catalyst with 15 points.

THE NON-RETURNERS: DeBari will miss the services of forward/center Josh Melucci (Cranston, RI) who averaged 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds and tossed in a career-high 27 in the win over Saint Anselm . . . point guard Justin Dick (Dorchester, MA) who led the Northeast-10 Conference with 129 assists and averaged 5.9 points . . . little used off-guard Akere Boma (Bronx, NY) and forward John Slyman (Bellingham, MA) are also gone.

RETURNING NUCLEUS: DeBari will mold the 2006-07 Greyhounds around that balanced offense of a year ago. Junior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) averaged 11.2 points and led the team with a gawdy .602 percentage from the floor (only four times all season did he go under .500 for a game) . . . he authored 14 games with double-figure points including a 26-point spectacular at Bentley in which he made 13-of-16 from the floor . . . junior guard LEROY BYRON (Worcester, MA/North) was the Hounds top perimeter player and averaged 10.3 points while playing over 800 minutes. Byron had 15 double-figure games . . . junior forward/captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable), the Hounds resident work-a-holicand 1,700 point producer in high school, averaged 10.1 points, 5.4 rebounds. shot .505 from the floor in his first year back from knee surgery. Twomey had a career-high 26 in a . . . junior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin), who scored over 1,100 points in high school, averaged 9.0 points and led the squad with 29 three-pointers despite playing most of the season with a stress fracture. Foti tossed in 22 in a overtime crusher at New Haven and 22 more in another overtime loss at nationally acclaimed Bryant . . . senior swingman/captain JUSTIN HOTCHKISS (Maynard, MA/Maynard/Cushing Academy) was just plain better than anyone thought and outworked people to 541 minutes, while averaging 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds and leading the league in floor burns. Hotchkiss had 16 points in the win at nationally ranked Mass. Lowell and eight other double-figure efforts.

THE SUPPORTING CAST: mention keys to the team and the name of sophomore point guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) comes up often . . . Bajema led his high school team to a pair of state championships and will be counted on to drive the Greyhound's bus and plainly get the ball to the right place like he did in a 91-84 win over Saint Michael's with a season-nest eight assists . . . sophomore guard/forward PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) who at times was a deft passing machine and at other times showed signs of being a premier perimeter shooter, like his 15-point season-high effort at Southern Connecticut . . . senior guard MIKE TAFT (Avon, CT/Avon) can light it up from deep and had his moments last year including 11 points off-the-bench at Pace . . . hyper junior forward ALEX POPP (pronounced Pope) (Winchester, MA/Winchester) specializes in making things happen . . . sophomore forward MAREK KULIG (Brick, NJ/Msgr. Donovan) leads the league in hustle.

NEW DOGS: the addition of guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) and forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Watertown, CT/Newton, MA North/Taft School) add considerable athleticism to the roster while walk-on MATT KING (Lexington, MA/Lexington/Cushing Academy) shows promise. Bluford is an offensive specialist expected to provide quickness and elevation to the guard tandem, while Malafaia will provide inside muscle and forward depth.

THIS YEAR: DeBari will build his new-look 2006-07 Greyhounds in the same mold of the many successful Greyhound teams of the past. Expect the Greyhounds to lead the league in diving on-the-floor and expect the team to play physical and aggressive defense. The addition of Bluford and Malafaia should help fix part of the missing ingredients of last year as the team expects to improve its offensive production by becoming more diverse in its attack. Offense predicated off switching defenses is always the order of the day with the more-than-occasional three thrown in. The Hounds are now as athletic as anyone in the conference which will make them a tough assignment on any given night.

WOMENS BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

LAST YEAR: the reviews for last year were mixed to say the least. The team reached the second round of the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs but their 11-11 regular-season record was an "underachievement" according to Coach KERRY PHAYRE. The needs were easily seen on the statistics sheet . . . a more prominent guard situation in which the perimeter game improves significantly and someone steps up to run the offense. The team shot just .397 from the floor despite having one of the dominant inside games in the conference and just .257 from three-point territory.

Overall the team finished 16-13 with significant wins against nationally ranked Southern Connecticut, Bentley and a sweep of the Assumption College Marriott Classic. A solid win over Franklin Pierce (72-51) to start the playoff run had hopes high, but a disappointing effort at Southern Connecticut (42-71) ended matters in the second round.

THE NON-RETURNERS: Phayre will first deal with the lost personnel as two guards, who saw nearly 1,400 minutes of playing time and two back-up forwards are among the missing. Off-guard Kerry Milhaven (Wantagh, NY) finished her career with 934 points and was the second-leading scorer on last year's squad at 8.6 points-per-game and led with 34 three-pointers and .788 free throw accuracy. Guard Kristen DiCalogero (Walpole, MA) averaged 6.8 points with 25 three-pointers, while forwards Amanda Krawiec (3.5 ppg, 3.3 reb) and Suzanne Jackson (East Greenwich, RI) (1.1 ppg, 2.2 reb) provided depth.

RETURNING NUCLEUS: Phayre will mold the 2006-07 Greyhounds around the marvelous talents of one of the Northeast-10 Conference's premier players in junior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy). Floyd led the team at 11.9 points-per-game and was the conference leader in rebounds (9.7) and floor accuracy (.583), while earning first-team all-star honors. She had eight double-doubles (points, rebounds) and enjoyed a monster game in a win over Saint Anselm with 25 points, 16 rebounds. Junior MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) is the other half of the Greyhound twin-towers and averaged 8.4 points, 4.1 rebounds with .516 floor accuracy. Her career-high came in a 23-point effort against Pace in which she made 10-of-13 from the floor. Senior guard/captain JESS PAULSON (Providence, RI/LaSalle) averaged 4.0 points and led the team with 62 assists. Her best effort came in the playoffs with a 15-point game at Franklin Pierce.

Sophomore guard BETH PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee), who averaged 7.6 points while adding an air of winning attitude and toughness to the lineup, earned conference all-freshman honors. She had nine double-figure efforts including a season-high 18 points against Franklin Pierce and started 18 of the final 19 games. Another sophomore, point TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) averaged 2.4 points and increased her playing time considerably as the season wore on---starting the final eight games of the season. She had a season high 10 points in a win at LeMoyne and averaged nearly four assists down-the stretch.

Senior guard ASHLEY LAMBERT (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) (1.9 ppg), junior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) (2.7 ppg, 4.1 reb) and junior swing BRITT BISHOP (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc) (0.7 ppg) provided depth.

NEW GREYHOUNDS: Phayre was busy during roster enhancement season adding six new faces to the lineup. Aggressive forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) was named Miss Maine Basketball after averaging 16.3 points and 9.0 rebounds leading her 21-1 team to the state championship. She adds more strength to an already solid inside game . . . off-guard AMANDA SHEEHY (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) is a cerebrate player with ability to add significantly to the perimeter game . . . forward VIKKI EWING (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West), who played for an unbeaten high school conference champion and the 2005 national champion Long Island Renegades (AAU), will add offense to the lineup . . . competitive guard MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) helped her high school team win the state championship. She now needs to make the transition from forward to guard, but has shown in preseason an ability to get points on the scoreboard . . . athletic guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock), who earned Norwich Bulletin and New london Day all-star honors, will add to the defensive pressure game, while giving Phayre a solid go-to-basket person . . . off guard JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson), who scored over 1,100 points in high school, will deal with an ACL problem to open the season.

THIS YEAR: Phayre will build her new-look 2006-07 Greyhounds in the same mold of her many successful Greyhound teams of the past and therefore expect the Greyhounds to lead the league in physical and aggressive defense. Their dominant inside game should once again play a prominent role however this time around a vastly improved perimeter game makes the Greyhounds extremely dangerous offensively. Overall this team can set its sights high with a return to the N.C.A.A. postseason.

ICE HOCKEY PROSPECTUS

When second-year head coach KEVIN ZIFCAK analyzed his teams chances for 2006-07 he kept mentioning physica
l presence in the defensive zone and offensive pressure. "If we improve these two major areas we will be a solid team." The schedule is a bit challenging and roster a bit on the young side but new air of confidence is readily apparent when talking to team members.

Let's look at the new-look Ice Dogs:

ANALYZING UP FRONT: the main problem with the 2005-06 team was the inability to generate sufficient offense. The Ice Dogs scored just 88 goals in 25 games (3.52 per game) and nearly half of that production went to graduation. Junior captain/left wing JIM TRAHON (Needham, MA/Needham/Salisbury School) was a bright spot as the leading scorer (17-10--27) . . . six other double-figure scorers return so the potential is there: junior right wing MIKE RUST (Swanzey, NH/Cushing Academy) (5-8--13), junior center LUKE MC DONOUGH (Norfolk, MA/Mt. St. Charles) (4-8--12), junior center MATT PAGET (Hingham, MA/Hingham/Winchendon School) (3-8--11), junior right wing JOHN ROUTHIER (Malden, MA/Malden Catholic/Winchendon School) (4-6--10) and sophomore left wing FRANK BOVA (Princeton, MA/Wachusett) (3-7--10). Junior right wing PAT CIUMMO (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles) (4-3--7), sophomore center RON CINCOTTA (Waltham, MA/Xaverian/Tilton School) (0-0- 0) and sophomore right wing CHRIS CHARLTON (Melrose, MA/Melrose) (0-1--1) add veteran depth.

ANALYZING THE DEFENSE: the defense starts and literally stops with sophomore goalie DAVID PINKHAM (Arlington, MA/Catholic) (4.82, .875 save pct.). Pinkham far exceeded expectations beating out three seniors for the starting job and then playing 935 minutes --- the only freshman listed among the Northeast 10 Conference leaders . . . sophomore goalie CASEY MC NALLY (Lunenburg, MA/Lunenburg) could compete for time . . . gone is solid defenseman Brian Blanchette (Woonsocket, RI) (2-8--10), but senior captain DAN SURETTE (Woburn, MA/Woburn) (3-6--9) returns and is a stabilizing influence and sophomore CHRIS GENOVESE (Woburn, MA/Governor's Academy) (3-7--10), who will convert from forward, adds punch to the power play. . . juniors PHIL DEMERS (Rutland, MA/St. John's) (1-6--7) and RANDY MORIN (Auburn, ME/Little/Hebron Academy) (1-1--2) provide veteran depth.

THE NON-RETURNERS: Zifcak loses three of the top four scorers on a team that had trouble scoring goals . . . center Bobby Fanciullo (Medford, MA) (11-16-27), who finished with 37-58--95 points . . . right wing Jeff Ilvonen (Auburn, MA) (14-12--26), the team's leading goal scorer who ended with 33-43- 76 points and left wing Craig Moreton (Lynnfield, MA) who ended with 8-11--19 points. Defensive defenseman Steve Snizek (Harrisville, RI) (2-3--5) is also gone as are goalkeepers Mike Sweeney (Plymouth, MA) (7.23 gaa in 365 minutes) and Sean O'Leary (Windham, ME) (4.23 gaa in 185 minutes)

NEW GREYHOUNDS: Zifcak is enthusiastic that his newcomers will add considerable depth and punch to the offense, while the new blue-liners will add a degree of physicality and skating ability.

Up front: Finnish left wing standout ATTE UOLA (Turku, Finland/Holderness) is a "very good skater with a great shot" . . . right wing JAMES CAPULLI (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton) "goes to the net very well and extremely physical" . . . right wing/center NICK FUSCO (Saugus, MA/Saugus/Bridgton) is "a tough competitor with good skate speed and a hard shot" . . . left wing SEAN STAID (Peabody, MA/St. Mary's) is "very good skater with athletic moves" . . .right wing/center TYLER CLEARY (Newington, CT/Newington) and center JAMES WOOD (Hamden, CT/Hamden) are "a high energy players with good speed and hands" . . . left wing MIKE ST. LAWRENCE (Holyoke, MA/Holyoke) is a "physical player who goes to net well" . . .

Defensively: goalie JAMIE DI GIULLIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton School) is "athletic and quick and could see time" . . . JON RETELLE (Monmouth, ME/Kents Hill) is "very strong, physical skater with great puck awareness" . . . PAT KEENAN (Candia, NH/Central) is "a smooth skater who plays bigger than his size" . . . DEREK WHITNEY (Scituate, MA/Scituate) has "good set skill with enormous reach and a very heavy shot from the point" . . . both TIM DUPUIS (West Suffield, CT/Suffield) and RIORDAN CANNATA (Charlestown, MA/Malden Catholic) are "skilled defensive defensemen with good vision."

THIS YEAR: Zifcak will rely heavily on a youth movement to rebuild his Ice Dogs. He is solid in goal with Pinkham and has proven a scoring leader in Trahon, while Surette is a steadying influence on the young defensive corps. Developing depth, rekindling a once-prolific offense and becoming physical behind the blue line will be the main topics of discussion at practice. This team could very well be a sleeper despite the brutal schedule . . . the team plays in the Bowdoin Colby Mixer, the Saint Michael's Tournament along with the now extra-tough Northeast-10 Conference schedule.
