SOFTBALL NOTES: senior righthander SHALYNN NAPOLITANO (Lawrence, MA/Fellowship Christian) pitched a one-hit shutout (7 strikeouts) against Slippery Rock, PA (8-0) in the Hounds' Southern finale . . . Napolitano is 2-3 overall with 3 saves, 35 strikeouts in 30.2 innings and a 2.74 ERA . . . sophomore lefthander LAUREN SYMONICK (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) and Napolitano combined on a two-hitter vs. Holy Family, PA (5-0) . . . Symonick is now 4-2 overall with 1 save, 31 strikeouts in 34.1 innings and a team-leading 0.82 ERA . . . senior outfielder/captain LISA CASTILLO (Lawrence, MA/Methuen) joined the career 100-hit club in Florida and leads the team at .375 (18-for-48) . . . other top performers for the Hounds include junior first baseman SANDRA DENMAN (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) (.333, 16-for-48) and sophomore catcher AMANDA MONGE (Reading, MA/Central Catholic) (.313, 15-for-48) . . . MILESTONES: senior outfielder/captain LISA CASTILLO (Lawrence, MA/Methuen) is now 112-for-380 (.295) in her career . . . senior third baseman TANIA PALUMBO (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) is 122-for-351 (.348) with 13 homers (sixth career) and 94 RBI (only six former Hounds reached 100 RBI) . . . senior righthander SHALYNN NAPOLITANO (Lawrence, MA/Fellowship Christian) has now 225 career strikeouts in 279.1 innings easing past Hall of Famer Amy Romano '88 (221) this weekend for fourth place . . . just ahead are Ann Gibbons '89 (237) and Julie Hanewich '92 (267), while Kristen Ladebauche '00 (691) might be out-of-reach.

DELUCIA JOINS HOUNDS ELITE: Coach RALPH DELUCIA, the Hounds all-time leader in softball coaching victories won his 200th on opening day and is now 208-166-5 in his ninth year with the team . . . only Hounds' Hall of Famers JOE O'BRIEN (321) and ANDY LASKA (224) won more games in one sport (both men's basketball) at Assumption College . . . his overall record including his successful tenure at Franklin High is 373-214-5 as he shoots for No. 400 later this year.

He scored a goal and added three assists in a win over American International and scored two man-up goals against Keene State. He finished with five points (two goals) in a victory over Green Mountain to earn Freshman-of-the-Week honors . . . senior attack STEVE SMITH (Princeton, MA/Wachusett) had 10 points (nine goals) including three goals and an assist in the win over American International, a goal against Keene State and five more against Green Mountain to earn weekly honor roll.

NORTHEAST-10 WOMEN'S HONORS: junior NICOLE PANKEY (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) won the triple jump and finished 17th in the 100-meter event to earn Field Athlete-of-the-Week honors.

NORTHEAST-10 MEN'S HONORS: junior PATRICK BIGGINS (Worcester, MA/South) finished second in the triple jump with a career-best 42-00.50.

TRACK NOTES: the Hounds will compete in the Worcester Collegiate Championships Saturday at WPI . . . the women will try to win their FOURTH consecutive title . . . junior NICOLE PANKEY (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) won the 100, triple jump and ran on the winning 4x100 relay team scoring 32.5 points to lead the Greyhounds in 2005 . . . junior PATRICK BIGGINS (Worcester, MA/South) is planning on doing a record EIGHT events Saturday.

EMMA GARDINER JOINS STAFF: former UMass standout sprinter EMMA GARDINER has joined the Greyhounds as a track and field assistant coach . . . Gardiner is a member of the Dedham High Athletic Hall of Fame (55m, 100m, shot put, long jump) . . . was a member of the school-record 4x100 relay team . . . ran on Atlantic Conference champion distance medley relay (she ran the 400 leg) . . . also competed at Boston International Track Club . . . has travelled extensively with Athletes-In-Action in South Africa and southeastern Asia performing track clinics . . . also served as head track coach at Worcester North High (2001-03).

TENNIS NOTES: the Greyhounds have now won their last 93 matches played against Northeast-10 Conference competition . . . 77-0 during the regular season and 16-0 in the postseason . . . they have won seven straight regular-season AND postseason championships . . . they are also in the hunt for their seventh straight N.C.A.A. postseason berth . . . the Hounds have won their last 56 matches at home . . . they are 113-16 vs. Division II and have won 99 matches by shutout scores since 1998-99 . . . they were picked by the coaches in the Northeast-10 Conference pre season poll unanimously to repeat as champions.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER CITED: senior libero/defensive specialist BETHANY HORDERN (Swansea, MA/Case) has been named the recipient of the Dr. George Doyle Memorial Award (former faculty member and department head) as the premier senior student in the Economics and Global Studies Department. She was named to the Northeast-10 Conference all-academic second-team in the fall.
Hordern is also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and has been a Math tutor for two years. She participated in the Semester-at-Sea Program taking courses and visiting locations such as China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, India, Kenya and South Africa. The double major (Economics and Mathematics), who carries a 3.80 GPA, is exploring career options as an actuary and pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics.

HOUNDS ANNOUNCER HOOKS ON WITH SEA DOGS: Hounds football and basketball play-by-play announcer CHRIS FAMA will join the broadcast team for the Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League for 2006 . . . he will serve as the pre- and post-game host and will provide play-by-play for selected games. He has also spent the last four years as the voice of Providence women's basketball team and did games for the Pittsfield Mets of the New York-Penn League.

THREE MORE SELECTED CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC: three more Assumption College student-athletes have been selected to the Northeast-10 Conference all-academic teams for their respective sports. Assumption College now has had EIGHT student-athletes selected for the 2005-06 academic year.

BRIAN GORDON MAKES ARENAFOOTBALL2 TEAM: all-America defensive tackle BRIAN GORDON '05 (Quaker Hill, CT/Waterford) has earned a spot on the roster of the Manchester Wolves of arenafootball2 after impressing the coaching staff during an open tryout this past weekend. After a stellar career as a defensive lineman with the Hounds, the 6-foot-2, 255-pounder had his best season as a senior in 2004 in which he finished third in the Northeast-10 with 12 sacks and second with a team-record 33 tackles-for-loss. He received numerous individual accolades for his performance, including being named to the Football Gazette all region first-team and all-America second-team. He also finished his career with 256 total tackles (13th on all-time list) and a school-record 27 sacks. Training camp begins in March and season opens in early April.

KEEPING UP WITH FORMER GREYHOUNDS: the proud guy standing on the sidelines at George Mason University men's basketball games these days is their athletics director TOM O'CONNOR '68 . . . Tom is a Hall of Fame basketball player and 1967-68 captain for Coach Joe O'Brien's Greyhounds . . . O'Connor was no stranger to the N.C.A.A. tournament as a player having earned four berths in four years and was a teammate for three years with Hounds A.D. TED PAULAUSKAS '67 . . .
