WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior running back HERBERT WOODARD (Bridgeton,
NJ/Salem) rushed 17 times for 163 yards and four touchdowns leading the Greyhounds
past Saint Anselm College, 45-12, in Northeast-10 Conference football here Saturday
at Grappone Stadium. Woodard scampered 64 yards on the Hounds' first play from
scrimmage to tie the game and later scored from three, one and 38 yards to pace
his team to its third straight win. The Greyhounds are now 5-2 overall and 4-1
in the conference.
In the process, he became
the Greyhound varsity career rushing leader with 2,431 yards passing Hall of
Famer Fran DeFalco '94 (2,289 yards) and the 'club' leader Rich Dandini
'89, who finished with 2,335 yards. He is the first to have ten career 100-yard
rushing games (5 this year), tied DeFalco for the most rushing touchdowns (29)
in a career and his 192 career points are just 12 points short of DeFalco's
career mark of 204.
Next week the Greyhounds
will travel to Bentley University, a 28-27 winner over Pace with kickoff slated
for 2 p.m. The Falcons are 5-1 in conference action tied with Southern Connecticut
for first place, while Assumption and Merrimack are right behind at 4-1. The
game will have special significance in the regional poll and in final determination
of possible N.C.A.A. aspirations.
Saint Anselm started quickly
in this game as sophomore Marc Wilson returned the opening kickoff 92 yards
for a touchdown. The conversion kick failed leaving the Hawks in front 6-0.
The Greyhounds, or rather Woodard, wasted no time as he rambled 64-yards on
his first carry to tie the game after just 30 seconds. Sophomore CORY KEMPS
(Carmel, IN/Carmel) kicked the conversion to give the Greyhounds the lead, 7-6.
Sophomore PAUL PEREZ
(Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) returned a punt 19 yards to the Saint Anselm 23 to set
up the next Greyhound score. Junior quarterback ANDREW KUPEC (Wyckoff,
NJ/Indian Hills) found junior wide receiver JOHN BARKER (Avon, MA/Xaverian)
for 22 yards on the second play setting up Woodard's three-yard burst up-the-middle
for the touchdown. Kemps conversion made it 14-6.
A 28-yard return by Perez
to the Saint Anselm 33 set up Kemps for a season- and career-best 45-yard field
goal---the second longest in Greyhound history. Jon Eisele '08 kicked
a 49-yarder to beat LaSalle University (10/27/07).
Saint Anselm drove 73 yards
in 10 plays early in the second period only to have senior middle linebacker
DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) stuff Wilson for no
gain on a fourth-down-and-one at the Hounds' 11. Assumption then drove 89 yards
in 13 plays to make it 24-6.
Woodard carried eight times
for 38 yards including the final yard for the score. Kupec found junior wide
receiver MARK GATELY (Waltham, MA/Waltham) for 34 yards to move the ball
to the Hawk's 47.
Saint Anselm drove 86 yards
in eight plays on its next series only to have Zitzmann again stymie the process
forcing a fumble subsequently recovered by sophomore defensive end KEVIN
PICKETTE (Burlington, MA/Burlington). Just before halftime, junior defensive
tackle MICHAEL FOLEY (Holden, MA/Saint John's) stopped the Hawks with
a quarterback sack and eight-yard loss.
The Greyhounds came out
fast the second half driving 53 yards in 10 plays to make it 31-6. Kupec rushed
for 18 yards, including a five-yard keeper for the score, and converted three
third-down plays to highlight the march.
After a short punt and
another return by Perez, this one for 16 yards to the Saint Anselm 38, the Hounds
were in business again. After an incomplete pass Woodard scampered 38 yards
for his fourth TD. Kemps conversion made it 38-6.
On the ensuing kickoff
junior LANCE MITCHELL (Boynton Beach, FL/Pope John II) stripped Wilson
and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. It was the first fumble returned for
a touchdown since linebacker Gino Meccariello '06 returned one against
American International (10/08/2005). Kemps' conversion made it 45-6 --two scores
in 10 seconds!
Wilson struck back however
racing 70 yards to the Greyhound 20 on the next kickoff. Freshman quarterback
Michael Pierce found junior wide receiver Marcel Bouie on the first play for
the lone Saint Anselm offensive touchdown. Pierce's pass for two-points went
awry.

LAST YEARS GAME:
junior placekicker Tyler McNamara kicked a 31-yard field goal with 3:11 left
to cap the comeback as Bentley edged the Greyhounds (22-19) in Waltham. The
Hounds moved to a 19-0 first-period lead as wide receiver Dominique Price and
sophomore quarterback JOSH RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central) became the
first duo in Assumption College football history to combine for two touchdown
passes of more than 70 yards in a game.
Bentley drove 62 yards
in seven plays for the game-winning points. A 49-yard pass from quarterback
Bryant Johnson to wide receiver John Studley to the Assumption 21 set up the
score. Studley finished with 11 receptions for 97 yards. Hounds' junior defensive
back BERNARD SCOTT (St. Petersburg, FL/Admiral Farragut) made a touchdown
saving tackle. Junior linebacker COLIN MIYADI (Concord, CA/Berean Christian)
made two keys stops to force the field goal attempt.
In the first period, Ratacik
connected with Price on the first play of the game from 74 yards to give the
Greyhounds a very quick 6-0 lead.
Ratacik who completed six-of-nine
passes for team-record 207 yards in the first period also threw a 31-yard touchdown
pass to senior wide out JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) and then
finished the period with an 83-yard heave to Price who eluded several defenders
en route to the end zone.
The Greyhounds struck again
with 5:27 left in the quarter driving 59 yards in just five plays with Ratacik
finding Fabiano on a 31-yard scoring strike for a 12-0 lead. An offside penalty
on the Falcons on a crucial third-down play, a Ratacik-to Price nine-yard pass
play and an eight-yard burst by sophomore running back HERBERT WOODARD
(Salem, NJ/Salem) highlighted the short drive.
On the next possession
Ratacik found Price on a deep sideline pattern and former Holy Name standout
circled back toward the middle eluding several tacklers for the score. Zack
Okolowitcz kicked the conversion for a 19-0 advantage.
Hounds' defensive back
Nate Kuffrey stopped a Falcons' drive picking off a Bentley quarterback John
White pass and returning to the 24.
A bad snap on a punt attempt
led to the first Falcons points as Hound punter Greg Nowak ran out of the endzone
for the safety with 9:50 left in the half.
The Falcons would drive
26 yards in six plays capped by a McNamara 31-yard field goal with 3:51 left
in the half. Bentley scored in the third period as fullback Matt Welch capped
an eight-play, 47-yard drive with a five-yard burst up-the middle. McNamara's
conversion made it 19-12.
Studley caught an 11-yard scoring pass from Johnson and McNamara's conversion
point tied it at 19-19 with 7:38 left. Bentley defensive back Chris Carroll
intercepted Ratacik at the 35 and returned it 30 yards to the Assumption 35
to set up the score. Johnson connected with Kyle Tuthill and with Rowe for 10
yards to highlight the drive.
A last drive by the Greyhounds
was stymied as defensive back Don Hopkins intercepted at the 19.

Greyhound Freshman
National Youth-of-the-Year
The Boys & Girls Club of America has named Assumption College freshman student-athlete
CAROLINA CORREA (Pawtucket, RI/Charles Shea) the National Youth-of-the-Year.
Correa will serve a one-year term as the national teen spokesperson for the
4.5 million youth served annually by Boys & Girls Clubs. She is the first Hispanic
female youth to receive the title.
A projected psychology
major, she will receive $26,000 in college scholarships from the program's founding
sponsor, Reader's Digest Foundation. The Youth-of the-Year program recognizes
outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys &
Girls Club; academic excellence, and personal challenges and obstacles overcome.
Correa was graduated from
Charles E. Shea High School, where she mentored freshmen and was a tutor. She
was nominated to the City of Pawtucket's Teen Hall of Fame, received the Rhode
Island Presidential Student-of-the-Year Award and was inducted into the National
Honor Society of High School Scholars. She also graduated in the top three percent
of her class.
She is a seven-year member
of the Boys & Girls Club program. At her local club, she learned English, made
many friends and excelled in the aquatics program. A member of the women's swimming
and diving team for Coach Peter Vellis, she was a three-time Most Valuable Swimmer
for Coach three times in high school and created a basic swimming skills program
for inner city youth, among other community service projects. Her specific speciality
is the backstroke.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
in Boys & Girls Clubs around the world, caring staff members encourage and support
the members they serve. Through this nurturing environment, many develop sound
character, leadership abilities and the willingness to give back to their community.
These are the qualities that make a Youth-of-the-Year. They are also some of
the most important qualities young people need to realize their full potential
as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
The National Youth-of-the-Year
program, Boys & Girls Clubs of America's premier character and leadership initiative,
recognizes outstanding contributions to a Club member's family, school, community
and Boys & Girls Club: as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome.
Participants are chosen on local and state levels, culminating with five regional
winners meeting in Washington, D.C., to compete for the National Youth-of-the
Year honor.
Since the program's inception
in 1947, each National Youth-of-the-Year has met with the President of the United
