Worcester Cross Country, NE-10 golf upcoming!
Hounds FOOTBALL hosts Saint Anselm Saturday;
MENS SOCCER still atop Northeast-10 standings;
GOLF finishes seventh in ECAC championship!
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Merrimack College parlayed the efforts of quarterback Kurt
Leone, running back Anthony Smalls and wide receiver Jeremiah Watts en route
to a hold-on 30-28 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Assumption College.
The Greyhounds lost their third straight nailbiter despite the performance
of sophomore running back HERBERT WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem). Woodard,
the Northeast-10 Conference 2007 Freshman-of-the-Year, rushed 16 times for 95
yards and two scores, caught four passes for 33 yards and returned a punt 85
yards for a third score. The 85-yard punt return in the first period is the
longest in Greyhounds' history breaking the old mark of 84 yards set by Ty
Smith '72 on the very first return in Assumption annals against Hartford
(11/7/69). He finished with 213 yards of all-purpose offense---his second career
game with over 200 yards.
Leone completed 21-of-35 passes for 364 yards and two touchdowns, Watts caught
a career-high 12 passes for 184 yards and a score and Smalls rushed 25 times
for a career-high 135 yards and a TD as the Warriors improved to 2-1.
Merrimack opened the scoring on the very first play of the game as Leone took
a pitchback from Smalls and heaved a 69-yard scoring strike to wide out Chris
Laham.
On the Greyhounds' third play Woodard raced 53 yards for a touchdown up the-middle
and freshman ZACK OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) kicked the
game-tying conversion at 13:15.
Garvey would kick a 40-yard field goal with 3:02 left in the first period
to give Merrimack the lead for good at 10-7. They would then drive 72 yards
in just four plays to move to a nine-point advantage (16-7).
Woodard set the punt return record in the second period as the Greyhounds
with Okolowticz' conversion cut the gap to two points, 16-14.
Merrimack however would drive 64 yards in nine plays to lead 23-14. Leone
passed to Watts (24 yards) and junior wide out Ryan DiGregorio (26 yards) before
finding Watts again for 14 yards and a touchdown. The Warriors missed a field
goal attempt from 36 yards with nine seconds left in the half.
In the third period Merrimack extended their lead to 30-14 driving 88 yards
in eight plays. Leone found wide out Chris McNeil for 33 yards and a first down
and Smalls rushed for 23 yards to highlight the drive. Running back Richard
Johnson finished the drive with an eight-yard burst up-the-middle for the score.
Woodard capped a 66-yard, 14-play march with a three-yard sprint to the corner
of the endzone. He rushed for 30 yards on eight carries to highlight the drive.
Sophomore quarterback JOSH RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central) then found
sophomore wide out DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) on an alley-oop
pass for the two-point conversion making it a one-possession game at 30-22 with
44 seconds left in the third period.
A tipped pass by freshman defensive back GEOFFREY MOCK (Sicklerville,
NJ/Timber Creek) on a fourth down play stopped a Merrimack drive with 3:02 left
in the game giving the Greyhounds one final attempt to tie.
The Hounds would drive 70 yards in six plays as Ratacik found sophomore wide
receiver MARK GATELY (Waltham, MA/Waltham) for 48 yards and then hit
senior wide out JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) for a 19 yards and
a touchdown---Fabiano make a diving catch in the corner of the endzone. The
pass for a two-point conversion failed.
The Hounds were led defensively by junior linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN
(Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) with 8-4--12 tackles and sophomore defensive
back KEITH BATES (Holden, MA/Wachusett) with 5-5--10 tackles.

LAST YEAR'S
GAME WITH SAINT ANSELM: freshman running back HERBERT WOODARD (Salem,
NJ/Salem) rushed 20 times for 277 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns
as Assumption College defeated Saint Anselm College, 71-21, in a Northeast-10
record-setting in Manchester, NH.
Woodard led
the Greyhounds to an amazing 43-7 first-period lead scoring the game's first
touchdown off left-tackle from 70 yards out on the first play of the game just
10 seconds in to the period. Senior JON EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont
Academy) kicked the first of seven conversions for a quick 7-0 lead. Eisele
tied the Hounds' mark making seven-of-seven conversions also held by Tim
Longden '03 vs. Mass. Lowell (11/4/00). He
is the third player in Greyhounds' history to score five touchdowns (and 30
points) in a single game (the first to do it one half) following Fran DeFalco
'95 at UMass Lowell (11/6/93) (all rushing) and Kevin Clive vs. Sacred
Heart (9/4/99). His 277 yards of all-purpose offense is the ninth-best total
in Hounds' history.
The team set
marks for most points in a game (71), half (57) and quarter (43), highest winning
margin (50), most touchdowns (9) and most one-point conversions (8).
The Greyhounds
so dominated the game they scored on 10 of their 14 possessions in the first
half---all six in the first quarter. They rushed 14 times for 211 yards (208
by Woodard) in the first period alone.
After scoring
on the game's first play it took just two plays to get the ball back as freshman
defensive back KEITH BATES (Holden, MA/Wachusett) made his first career
interception and returned it to the Hawks' 30. Woodard scored from there three
plays later and Eisele kicked the conversion for a 14-0 lead with 12:21 left
in the period.
The next series
would end as Greyhounds' junior defensive back DAN HICKEY (Auburn, MA/Auburn)
tackled the Hawks' punter Andrew Marques for a 23-yard loss at the Hawks' 18.
A loss of 11 yards on a quarterback keeper by Taylor Humphrey (Lafayette,
CA/Miramonte) and ensuing 26-yard pass to junior wide receiver JOEY FABIANO
(Westwood, MA/Westwood) set the Hounds up at the two. Woodard scored from there
and senior holder Matt Klaskin (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian) made the best of
bad center snap on the conversion scooting to the corner of the endzone for
a two-pointer and a 22-0 advantage.
The Hounds
would score again driving 70 yards in five plays as freshman LANCE MITCHELL
(Boynton Beach, FL/Pope John Paul) capped the march with a five-yard off-right
tackle run. Eisele converted for a 29-0 advantage. A 38-yard scamper around
left end and a 31-pass to senior wide receiver Jake Beers (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)---extending
his consecutive game streak with at least one reception to 16---highlighted
the drive.
A fumble recovery
by freshman defensive tackle MATT CHALMERS (Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy)
at the Hounds' 48 set up the next score. Woodard rushed for 12 and 50 yards
(after a 10-yard holding call) and Eisele kicked the conversion for a 36-0 lead.
Saint Anselm
would then mount its first drive of the game going 59 yards in just six plays.
Quarterback Nick Barese rushed for 13 and 20 yards to start the march and finally
found wide receiver Ryan Drago for the score from six yards out. On the ensuing
kickoff sophomore DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) rambled 90
yards---the sixth time the Hounds have had a return of 90 yards or more---for
a touchdown. It was the first kickoff returned for a score since Kevin L'Ecuyer
'07 returned one 86 yards, also against Saint Anselm, September 20, 2003.
Eisele kicked the conversion to make it 43-7.
The Hounds
would continue the assault in the second period tacking on two more scores for
a record-breaking 57-7 halftime advantage.
A short punt
set the Hounds up at the Saint Anselm 46. Woodard would rush five times for
19 yards and Humphrey would find Canney for 18 yards and finally freshman MARCUS
NICHOLS (Salem, NJ/Salem) on a seven-yard flair for his first collegiate
score with 4:01 left. Eisele kicked the conversion.
A fumble recovery
by junior linebacker MITCHELL WELCH (Southington, CT/Southington) set
up the final score of the half---a 39-yard scamper by Woodard. Mitchell scored
from 11 yards out in the third period and freshman running back Bryan Duke ran
five yards off left-tackle for the final score in the fourth period. A 21-yard
quarterback keeper by Barese in the third period and a one-yard plunge, also
by Barese, in the fourth period accounted for the final Hawk points.
GREYHOUND
NOTES: the Hounds amassed 498 total yards including 380 rushing . . . they
also held a huge 33:58 to 26:02 in time of possession . . . they converted eight-of-13
third downs . . . freshman quarterback JOSH RATACIK (Manchester,
NH/Central) was four-for-four for 27 yards in his first collegiate action .
. . freshman wide receiver MARK GATELY (Waltham, MA/Waltham) had three
receptions for 19 yards (his first as a collegian) . . . senior defensive end
Jared Kelly (Canton, MA/Xaverian) had 6-0--6 tackles with a quarterback
sack, three tackles-for-loss and three hurries . . .

A.A., nine years ago, is to unite all of the student-athletes and coaches
at the College and declare their intentions to be held to the highest standards
of personal integrity and honor.
Sportsmanship, a selfless
sense of behavior, and a promise to their teammates, school and fans, whom they
represent, that they will strive for a standard of excellence that reflects
the dedication and honor of all members of the college community. The program
concluded with all student-athletes reciting the Assumption College Student-Athlete
Honor Code together.
Scripture readings were
made by women's basketball senior captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River,
MA/Durfee) and men's lacrosse junior captain MIKE SJOGREN (Leiceester,
MA/Saint John's). Two student-athletes reflected on their experiences: women's
cross country/track captain HEATHER GOSTYLA (Bloomfield, CT/NW Catholic)
and baseball senior JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/Saint Peter-Marian).
