Women's soccer splits two games in home friendly
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Running back Evin Jones rushed 22 times for 210 yards and
four touchdowns as Division I-A Sacred Heart University came-from-behind to
defeat Assumption College, 42-21, in the football opener for both teams here
SATURDAY night at Campus Field.
Jones scored
on runs of 5, 50, 9 and 42 yards as the Pioneers erased an early 14-0 deficit
with a devastating ground game that ate up 279 yards on 32 carries . . . an
average of 8.7 yards-per-rush.
This week
the Greyhounds are at Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University SATURDAY
at 12 noon. This week's game will NOT be broadcast. Most Greyhound football
games can be watched/listened to via webcast or LIVESTATS live at: www.assumptiongreyhounds.com/athletics/webcast/index.
The Greyhounds
moved to an early 14-0 advantage. Freshman punter GREG NOWAK (West Palm
Beach, FL/Wellington), who punted for a Greyhound team-record 50.3 yards-per-kick---outdistancing
the previous mark set by Mike O'Donnell '78 (48.6) set versus Lowell,
November 5, 1977---boomed his first-career kick 50-yards. Sophomore defensive
back KEITH BATES (Holden, MA/Wachusett) recovered the ensuing fumble
at the Sacred Heart 23 setting the stage for the first Greyhound touchdown.
Junior DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) jarred the ball
loose from the Pioneer's deep man.
After the
drive stalled, the Greyhounds then ran a fake field goal play to perfection
as sophomore holder D.B. HASEOTES (North Attleboro, MA/Moses Brown) passed
to a wide open senior wide receiver (Westwood, MA/Westwood) 31 yards for a touchdown.
Freshman ZACK OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) kicked the conversion
for a 7-0 lead with 11:19 left in the period.
In the second
period, the Greyhounds drove 75 yards in 13 plays with a sophomore running back
LANCE MITCHELL (Boynton Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) capping the march
from seven yards out on a right slant.
Sophomore
wide receiver DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), who caught a
career-high seven passes for 78 yards, had two receptions in the drive for 13
yards and 20 yards, while Mitchell contributed a 15-yard run around right end.
Okolowitcz converted for a 14-0 margin.
On the next
series, Hounds' sophomore quarterback JOSH RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central)
was intercepted on a controversal play---the ball appeared to have bounced before
the catch---by the Pioneers' cornerback Rishard Brown. Sacred Heart then drove
39 yards in seven plays with quarterback Dale Fink tossing a 10-yard scoring
pass to wide receiver Todd Washington. Joe Schroder kicked the conversion with
just eight seconds left in the second period.
The Pioneers
dominated the third period scoring three touchdowns as Jones started the uprising
by capping a six-play, 39-yard drive with a five-yard scamper around right end.
Running back/returner Gerry Coles contributed a 43-yard return of the kickoff
to the Assumption 39---touchdown-saving tackle by kicker Okolowitcz. A 19-yard
scamper by Jones and a 10-yard pass play from Fink-to-Patterson set up the score
to tie the game (14-14) just 2:18 into the second half.
After a 52-yard
punt by Nowak, the Pioneers drove 80 yards in six plays, with Jones taking care
of the final 50 on a run right up-the-middle, to take the lead for the first
time at 21-14. Coles dashed 68 yards on the next possession and Jones capped
a 59-yard, eight-play drive with a nine-yard run up-the-middle early in the
fourth period for a 35-21 lead.
With 2:08 left Jones rushed 42 yards on a broken play to account for the final.

LAST YEAR'S
GAME: Assumption 10, Pace 7
PLEASANTVILLE, NY --- For the second time in three weeks senior placekicker
Jon Eisele kicked the a game-deciding field goal in the late stages of
the fourth period as Assumption College defeated Pace University, 10-7, in a
Northeast 10 Conference game.
For the first
time in Greyhounds varsity history they have won their last three games in a
season . . . beating LaSalle (10-7), L.I.U.-C.W. Post (31-24) and Pace (10-7).
In the 1975 club season the Greyhounds won their final five games including
the postseason Heritage Bowl over Niagara (27-7). Eisele kicked the game-winning
49-yard field goal against LaSalle.
Freshman running
back HERB WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) scored on a four-yard run in the
third period to tie the game and rushed 30 times for 152 yards. He finished
the season with 179 rushes for 966 yards rushing and 1,016 yards of all purpose
offense.
Also, sophomore
wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) (4 rec., 24 yards)
became the first Hound with 60 receptions in a single season and finished with
a team-record 870 yards--eclipsing the team record, set during thet club years,
by John McKeon in 1976 (854). In addition, senior wide receiver Jake
Beers (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) (2 rec., 50 yards) became the second with two
50-reception seasons and the first with back-to-back seasons with 50.
Defensively,
sophomore linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins)
who became the first Greyhound with over 200 tackles (81-136 217) and the first
with 100 or more as both a freshman (104) and a sophomore (113). Junior safety
CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) had five tackles and now
has exactly 100 initial contacts and 100 assists for 200 tackles and senior/captain
defensive end Jared Kelly (Canton, MA/Xaverian) ended with 5-5- 10 tackles
and 92-113--205 for his career.
Pace opened
the scoring in the first period driving 54 yards in seven plays following a
fumble recovery by tackle Daniel Ward. Running back Ruben Pagan rushed three
times for 13 yards and quarterback Adam Headley completed passes for 14 yards
to tight end Adam Kulak and 13 yards to freshman wide receiver Marcus Haas for
the score. Placekicker Josh Trumper added the conversion for a 7 0 lead.
The Greyhounds
would then drive on the next possession 51 yards in 11 plays for the halftime
equalizer.
After Canney
returned the kickoff to near midfield Woodard did the bulk of the work in moving
the ball downfield---rushing six times for 29 yards including the last four
off-tackle for the score on the final play of the half. A 12-yard pass from
junior quarterback TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) to Beers
picked up a crucial first down on a fourth-and-seven play. Eisele's conversion
tied it 7-7.
In the waning
moments of the third period and early fourth period the Greyhounds drove 60
yards in 12 plays to set up the game-deciding field goal. Again Woodard was
a workhorse with six carries for 44 yards and three first downs.
Pace had two more opportunities . . . the first snuffed as Martino deflected
a pass from Headley to Haas inside the five-yard line as senior end JOSH
KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) and Zitzmann applied pressure to the quarterback
and the second as sophomore cornerback BERNARD SCOTT (St. Petersburg,
FL/Admiral Farragut) interrupted another Headley-to-Haas aerial.
GREYHOUND
NOTES: the Greyhounds held the Setters to 182 yards of total offense . .
. just 61 yards rushing . . .
Defensively two Greyhounds reached double-figures in tackles: sophomore middle
linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) (5-7--12)
(his seventh double-figure game this year!) and senior end JARED KELLY
(Canton, MA/Xaverian) (5-5--10) . . .
Senior wide
receiver Jake Beers (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and sophomore wide receiver
DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) are the prolific duo in a single
season in Hounds' history with 112 receptions for 1,529 yards breaking the old
mark of 93 set by Billy DeMalia (43) and Eric Mauer (50) in 2000
. . .
Beers with
159 receptions for 1,950 is second only to Eric Mauer '01, who finished
with 2,166 . . . Canney is at 1,440 yards (sixth in Hound annals) . . . for
his career he is at 2,241, seventh Greyhound over 2,000 yards . . . his 523
yards in kickoff returns is fourth-best and his 1,030 career yards is third-best
. . .
junior quarterback
TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) has completed a record 170
passes in 320 attempts (second most to Chad Carges' 305 in 2000) for
2,204 yards as the first Greyhound to pass for over 2,000 yards in a season
. . . his .531 completion percentage is the third best in Hounds' history .
. . he is also the first with over 2,000 yards of total offense (2,256) yards
. . .
freshman running
back HERB WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) scored 60 points the seventh highest
total in Hounds' history . . . he has 10 rushing touchdowns (fourth best in
a single season) and ended with 966 yards . . . senior placekicker Jon Eisele
(Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy) now holds the record for points in a season
for a placekicker (45)
