Lance Brady Named Head Hockey Coach
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore forward Stephen BLAISDELL (Peabody,
MA/Peabody) scored 9:25 into the first overtime period as Assumption College
stopped Stonehill College, 4-3, in a Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer game
Saturday at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
Meanwhile, in Rindge, NH, junior forward Sarah RANIERI (Bellingham,
MA/Bellingham) scored with just 2:44 left in the second overtime as the Hound
field hockey team defeated Franklin Pierce, 1-0, in a Northeast-10 game at Sodexo
Field.
MEN'S SOCCER: Blaisdell, the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Freshman-of-the-Year,
scored his first goal of the season on a header as freshman forward Andrew
Kroh (Mount Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) crossed the goal with a pass
from the right side. The Greyhounds tied the game with just 37 seconds left
in regulation as sophomore midfielder Brendan McGee (Merrimack, NH/Bishop
Guertin) scored his first goal of the season in a scramble in front of the net
setting the stage for the Blaisdell heroics.
The Greyhounds (2-1-1 overall) moved into first place in the conference with
the victory with seven points (2-0-1) tied with power Southern Connecticut (2-0-1).
The Greyhounds host Le Moyne Tuesday at 7.
Stonehill moved to a quick 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes. Sophomore midfielder
Todd Shigo converted a pass with a blast just under the crossbar at 5:41. Just
over three minutes later (8:55) senior back Kevin Halloran redirected a crossing
pass from Shigo into the far corner.
Greyhounds' senior captain Paul MURPHY (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) picked
up a loose ball in front after a shot by sophomore midfielder Jeffrey SWAN
(Fairfield, CT/Fairfield-Ludlowe) and drilled it past the right post to cut
the lead in half at 24:06. Kroh tied the game at 2-2 on a pass from Blaisdell
redirecting from the right side to the far post at 39:17.
The Skyhawks took the lead again as freshman forward Michael White headed a
pass from junior forward David Pohl for a 3-2 lead at the 79:44 mark.
Hounds' sophomore goalkeeper Brandon SULLIVAN (Halesite, NY/Saint Dominic)
made four saves to post the win, while Stonehill sophomore netminder Brandon
McFarlane made four saves for the Skyhawks. The Greyhounds outshot Stonehill,
15-10 and enjoyed a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
WOMEN'S FIELD HOCKEY: Ranieri converted a turnover inside the crease
area into the game's lone goal and junior goalkeeper Jacque DULONG (Merrimack,
NH/Merrimack) made six saves to post the shutout as the Greyhounds improved
to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan made eight saves for Franklin Pierce.
Dulong made the biggest save of the first half denying Franklin Pierce senior
defender Stephanie Howard on a point blank shot from the left side of the circle.
Franklin Pierce held a slight 8-7 advantage in shots in the half. The teams
played a scoreless second half and the Ravens held a slight advantage in the
first overtime registering all four shots.
Ranieri finally broke through for Assumption with the game-winner just over
two minutes into the second overtime period. Franklin Pierce turned the ball
over inside the circle, which allowed Assumption junior forward Hillary ZYSK
(Walpole, MA/Walpole) to feed Ranieri on the right side for the game's only
goal.
Assumption returns to action

LAST YEAR'S
GAME WITH MERRIMACK: Senior Colin Temple completed 18-of-28 passes for
249 yards and two touchdowns and junior wide receiver Chris Laham caught seven
passes for 152 yards to lead Merrimack past Assumption, 33-20, in a Northeast-10
football game at the Multi-Sports Stadium.
The Greyhounds
outgained the visiting Warriors, 431-333, and got standout performances from
junior quarterback Taylor HUMPHREYS (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte, CA) (25-for-38,
265 yards) and freshman running back Herb WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) (17
carries, 129 yards). Defensively, sophomore linebacker Dustin ZITZMANN
(Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) finished with 3-7- 10 tackles, his sixth double-figure
tackle game this year, and junior safety Chris MARTINO (Lincroft,
NJ/Middletown South) had two interceptions and six tackles.
And, senior
wide receiver Jake BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) became the Greyhounds'
career leader in receptions catching six for 91 yards --- he now has 143 for
his career surpassing Eric Mauer (1997-2000) who caught 140 in his career.
The Warriors led 17-14 after one period as the teams combined for 134 yards
rushing and 149 yards passing --- 283 yards of total offense!
Merrimack
advanced the opening drive 47 yards in 11 plays --- with sophomore running back
Richard Johnson carrying seven times for 27 yards. Sophomore placekicker Sean
Garbey kicked a 29-yard field goal to cap the drive as the Greyhounds' defense
stiffened.
Freshman safety
Keith BATES (Holden, MA/Wachusett) stopped Johnson for a four-yard loss
on second down at the nine and then junior linebacker Mitchell WELCH
(Southington, CT/Southington) hurried Temple into an incompletion on the third
down play.
The Greyhounds
then drove on the ensuing series 69 yards in seven plays. After sophomore David
CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) returned the kickoff 24 yards to the
31, Humphrey rushed 11 yards on keeper on the first play and hit junior wide
receiver Joey FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) for 14, eight yards on
back-to-back plays. Canney then fired a 23-yard option play touchdown pass to
Fabiano. Senior placekicker Jon EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy)
kicked the conversion for a 7-3 lead.
The teams
traded interceptions, first Martino picking off Temple at the Greyhounds 31,
and then the Warriors sophomore corner Sam Belvines returned the favor on the
first play going the other way for 34 yards and touchdown (Garvey kicked the
conversion) to give Merrimack at 10-7 advantage.
And, then
Woodward scampered 75 yards on the second play of the ensuing series (Eisele
converted) as the Greyhounds regained the lead, 14-10, with 3:48 left. Woodard
is now the only back in Greyhounds history to have more than one run of 70+
yards from scrimmage. Accomplished just eight times in their history Woodard
has done it twice---also running 75 yards for a score against Saint Anselm (9-15-07).
Merrimack
completed the offensive first period dirving 60 yards in just four plays to
again take the lead, 17-14. Temple completed passes of eight yards to senior
tight end Sean McFee), 10 yards to junior wide receiver Jawara Loftis and finally
39 yards to Laham for the score. Garvey kicked the conversion.
Eisele would
kick two second-period field goals, the second with just two seconds remaining
to usher the Greyhounds in front 20-17 at the halftime break. It was the first
time in his career kicking two in one game.
In a long
time-consuming 16-play, 56-yard drive Humphrey and Woodard led the Greyhounds
into range for Eisele. Woodward rushed six times for 24 yards and Humphrey completed
four-of-five passes for 32 yards. A second interception by Martino and subsequent
22-yard return to the Assumption 49 yard line set the Greyhounds up for the
go-ahead points.
Humphrey completed passes of 24 yards to Beers, 15 yards to sophomore tight
end Matt THIBEAULT (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg/Worcester Academy) to highlight
the march. Eisele kicked a 20-yard field goal with 25 seconds left but a Merrimack
personal foul penalty (roughing the kicker) set the Hounds up with a first and-goal
at the one. Eisele kicked the field goal again from 20 yards after two rushes
and an incomplete pass failed to find the endzone.
Merrimack
took the lead with a third-period touchdown as Temple connecteed with Loftis
on an 11-yard slant (Garvey converted) with 7:32 remaining and then added insurance
in the fourth period as Garvey kicked a 34-yard field goal and sophomore running
back Mike Young scored from two yards out with 2:18 left in the fourth period.
Temple completed
passes of 10 yards to Loftis, 10 yards to senior tight end Ryan Salter and finally
11 more yards to Loftis for the score in the third period.
A fumble recovery
by Belvines stopped the Greyhounds on the ensuing series and started the Warriors
on a 13-play, 55-yard drive culminating in the Garvey field goal. Temple found
Laham for 14 yardsm Salter for 10, Laham for 17 more and 12 yards to junior
wide receiver Chris McNeill to highlight the march.
A Temple-to-Laham
45-yard pass play on a third-and-seven play to the Assumption two-yard line
set up the final Merrimack touchdown.

STUDENT-ATHLETE
CANDLELIGHT SERVICE: What has become a fast growing tradition at Assumption
College, the Greyhounds staged their ninth annual Student-Athlete Candlelight
Service in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit last Thursday (September 11, 2008).
The purpose
of the event, born out of a dream and initial groundwork of the late Brother
Robert Beaulac, A.A., nine years ago, is to unite all of the student-athletes
and coaches at the College and declare their intentions to be held to the highest
standards of personal integrity and honor.
Sportsmanship,
a selfless sense of behavior, and a promise to their teammates, school and fans,
whom they represent, that they will strive for a standard of excellence that
reflects the dedication and honor of all members of the college community. The
program concluded with all student-athletes reciting the Assumption College
Student-Athlete Honor Code together.
Scripture
readings were made by women's basketball senior captain BETHANY PLASSKI
(Fall River, MA/Durfee) and men's lacrosse junior captain MIKE SJOGREN
(Leiceester, MA/Saint John's). Two student-athletes reflected on their experiences:
women's cross country/track captain HEATHER GOSTYLA (Bloomfield, CT/NW
