WOMEN'S SWIMMING debuts FRIDAY vs. WPI
CROSS COUNTRY off to the New Englands!
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore forward TINA GILLEN (East
Bridgewater, MA/Carver) scored the game-tying and game-winning goals as Assumption
College women's soccer team upset nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire University,
3-2, TUESDAY night in the Multi-Sport Stadium.
Southern New Hampshire University came into the match ranked No. 17 in this
week's NSCAA national poll (and third in the regional poll).
The Greyhounds are now 6-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in conference
play, while Southern New Hampshire is now 6-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the conference.
The Penmen win streak ended at six straight. The Greyhounds are 4-1-1 over their
last six games.
Gillen tied the game at 2-2 for the Greyhounds at 64:01 collecting
a header pass from junior midfielder KELLEY DE WALT (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry)
and blasting a low line drive into the left corner. She then scored the game-winner
with just 3:26 left. She took a crossing pass from freshman forward KIRSTEN
CHIRICHETTI (Billerica, MA/Billerica) and scored over a prone Southern New
Hampshire goalkeeper STEF YOUNG (Natick, MA/Marian). Gillen now has four
goals this season.
Southern had moved to a quick lead as its leading scorer, senior
forward SOPHIA SAINT PAUL (Brockton, MA/Brockton), notched her
seventh goal of the season at 18:27 of the first half. Freshman midfielder ARIEL
TEIXEIRA (Warren, RI/Mount Hope) sent Saint Paul in alone on Hounds' sophomore
goalkeeper LAUREN KEATING (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) for a shot to the
far post.
The Greyhounds however answered at 37:39 as DeWalt scored on
a header off a corner kick. DeWalt is the Hounds' leading scorer with 5-4--14
points.
The Penmen retaliated at 38:54 as sophomore midfielder KRISTINA CARDOSO
(Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) beat a prone Keating with a shot past the right post.
Freshman forward EMILY DONAHUE (Bristol, RI/Mount Hope) assisted on the
play.
Southern New Hampshire outshot the Greyhounds, 12-10, and held
a slight 4 3 advantage in corner kicks. Young made two saves in net for Southern,
while Keating had five saves for the Greyhounds.
Assumption is next in action when they host No. 15 ranked (second
regionally) Franklin Pierce University in another Northeast-10 Conference match
Sunday at 1 p.m.
FOOTBALL

left to cap an incredible comeback as Bentley College edged Assumption College,
22-19, in Northeast-10 Conference football last week.

moved to a 19-0 first-period lead as sophomore wide receiver DOMINIQUE PRICE
(Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and sophomore quarterback JOSH RATACIK (Manchester,
NH/Central) became the first duo in Assumption College football history to combine
for two touchdown passes of more than 70 yards in a game.

Bentley drove 62 yards in seven plays for the game-winning points. A 49-yard
pass from quarterback Bryant Johnson to wide out John Studley to the Assumption
21 set up the score---Studley finished with 11 receptions for 97 yards. Hounds'
junior defensive back BERNARD SCOTT (St. Petersburg, FL/Admiral Farragut)
made a touchdown saving tackle. Junior linebacker COLIN MIYADI (Concord,
CA/Berean Christian) made two keys stops to force the field goal attempt.
In the first period,
Ratacik connected with Price on the first play of the game from 74 yards to
give the Greyhounds a very quick 6-0 lead.
Ratacik who completed six-of-nine passes for team-record 207 yards in the first
period also threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to senior wide out JOEY FABIANO
(Westwood, MA/Westwood) and then finished the period with an 83-yard heave to
Price who eluded several defenders en route to the end zone.

The Greyhounds struck
again with 5:27 left in the quarter driving 59 yards in just five plays with
Ratacik finding Fabiano on a 31-yard scoring strike for a 12-0 lead. An offside
penalty on the Falcons on a crucial third-down play, a Ratacik-to Price nine-yard
pass play and an eight-yard burst by sophomore running back HERBERT WOODARD
(Salem, NJ/Salem) highlighted the short drive.
On the next possession
Ratacik found Price on a deep sideline pattern and former Holy Name standout
circled back toward the middle eluding several tacklers for the score. Freshman
ZACK OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) kicked the conversion for
a 19-0 advantage.
Hounds' sophomore defensive
back NATE KUFFREY (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) stopped a Falcons' drive
picking off a Bentley quarterback John White pass and returning to the 24.
A bad snap on a punt
attempt led to the first Falcons' points as Hound freshman punter GREG NOWAK
(Oak Bluff, Fl/Wellington) ran out of the endzone for the safety with 9:50 left
in the half.
The Falcons would drive
26 yards in six plays capped by a McNamara 31-yard field goal with 3:51 left
in the half.
Bentley scored in the
third period as fullback Matt Welch capped an eight play, 47-yard drive with
a five-yard burst up-the-middle. McNamara's conversion made it 19-12. Studley
caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Johnson and McNamara's conversion point
tied it at 19-19 with 7:38 left. Bentley defensive back Chris Carroll intercepted
Ratacik at the 35 and returned it 30 yards to the Assumption 35 to set up the
score. Johnson connected with Kyle Tuthill and with Rowe for 10 yards to highlight
the drive.
A last drive by the
Greyhounds was stymied as defensive back Don Hopkins intercepted at the 19.

Pace 27, Assumption
20/September 6, 2008
EARLIER GAME THIS YEAR: Pace University took advantage of six Assumption
College turnovers en route to a statistically improbable, 27-20, non conference
football win over the Greyhounds at Pace Field. The Greyhounds had twice the
total offense (315-148), more first downs (17 10) and a wide advantage in time
of possession (33:35-26:25).
Sophomore running back
Herbert WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) was a spark for the Greyhounds with
two touchdowns (2 yard run, 74-yard reception), 54 yards rushing, four receptions
for 96 yards and a punt return for 29 yards---179 yards of all-purpose offense.
Freshman running back Riedrick Alceus rushed 22 times for 86 yards and caught
three passes for 12 yards and scored one touchdown to lead the Setters' offense.
The game started favorably
for the visitors as Pace fumbled the opening kickoff. Hounds' freshman Zack
OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) kicked to the Pace 28 where sophomore
Nate KUFFREY (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) forced a fumble recovered by sophomore
Ryan CROWLEY (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian).
Sophomore quarterback
Josh RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central) completed his first pass to sophomore
wide out Marcus NICHOLS (Salem, NJ/Salem) before Woodard rushed four
straight times, finally into the endzone (two yards). Okolowitcz kicked the
conversion for 7-0 lead just 2:32 into the first period.
It did not last long as Eric Ortega returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for
a touchdown. Ali Mourtada kicked the score-tying conversion.
The Greyhounds then
drove 72 yards in 18 plays chewing up 10:11 off-the clock. Woodard carried 10
times for 31 yards to dominate the drive. Sophomore quarterback Andy KUPEC
(Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills) was a major factor in the drive keeping to pick
up two key first downs . . . one on a fourth-and-two and the second on a third-and-one.
He then found sophomore wide receiver Dominique PRICE (Worcester,
MA/Holy Name) on an alley-oop pass in the corner of the endzone on a eight-yard
scoring play. Defensive end Lee Robinson blocked Okolowitcz' conversion attempt
and cornerback Roben Pagan returned the ball to the Assumption 15 in a two-point
conversion attempt---points-saving tackle by Crowley.
The Setters then converted
an interception by linebacker Jesus Cardona and ensuing 17-yard return to the
Assumption eight into the go-ahead touchdown. Alceus scored on the first play
and Mourtada kicked the conversion for a 14-13 advantage.
On the next series
Kupec found Woodard on a 74-yard touchdown pass to give the Hounds the lead
at halftime. Okolowitcz kicked the conversion for a 20-14 lead. The 74-yard
play is the ninth longest pass-play in Greyhounds' football history.
Despite leading by
just six points at the break, the Greyhounds dominated the statistics: 247-51
in total offense, 15-2 in first downs and 20:14-9:46 in time of possession.
Kupec finished 11-for-14 for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
The Setters would score
13 unanswered points in the third period to account for the final score.
They parlayed another
mistake by the Greyhounds---this time a blocked punt by Cardona and recovered
by defensive back Taylor McGinnis at the Assumption 22. Quarterback Ray Gregg
threw a 14-yard completion to tight end Andy Kulak, Alceus rushed up-the-middle
for three more and finally Gregg scored from five yards out. Mourtada kicked
the conversion which put Pace in front to stay, 21-20.
Linebacker Max Katzner
added a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown with 52 seconds left to
account for the final.
LAST YEAR'S GAME:
Assumption 10, Pace 7
For the second time in three weeks senior placekicker Jon Eisele
kicked the a game-deciding field goal in the late stages of the fourth period
as Assumption College defeated Pace University, 10-7, in a Northeast-10 Conference
game in Pleasantville, NY. For the first time in Greyhounds varsity history
they have won their last three games in a season . . . beating LaSalle (10-7),
L.I.U.-C.W. Post (31-24) and Pace (10-7). In the 1975 club season the Greyhounds
won their final five games including the postseason Heritage Bowl over Niagara
(27-7). Eisele kicked the game-winning 49-yard field goal against LaSalle.
Freshman running back
Herbert WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) scored on a four-yard run in the third
period to tie the game and rushed 30 times for 152 yards. He finished the season
with 179 rushes for 966 yards rushing and 1,016 yards of all-purpose offense.
Also, sophomore wide
receiver David CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) (4 rec., 24 yards)
became the first Hound with 60 receptions in a single season and finished with
a team-record 870 yards--eclipsing the team record, set during thet club years,
by John McKeon in 1976 (854). In addition, senior wide out Jake Beers
(Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) (2 rec., 50 yards) became the second with two 50-reception
seasons and the first with back-to-back.
Defensively, sophomore
linebacker Dustin ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) who became
the first Greyhound with over 200 tackles (81-136 217) and the first with 100
or more as both a freshman (104) and a sophomore (113). Junior safety Chris
MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) had five tackles and now has exactly
100 initial contacts and 100 assists for 200 tackles and senior/captain defensive
end Jared Kelly (Canton, MA/Xaverian) ended with 5-5- 10 tackles and
92-113--205 for his career.
Pace opened the scoring
in the first period driving 54 yards in seven plays following a fumble recovery
by tackle Daniel Ward. Running back Ruben Pagan rushed three times for 13 yards
and quarterback Adam Headley completed passes for 14 yards to tight end Adam
Kulak and 13 yards to freshman wide receiver Marcus Haas for the score. Josh
Trumper added the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
The Greyhounds would
then drive on the next possession 51 yards in 11 plays for the halftime equalizer.
After Canney returned
the kickoff to near midfield Woodard did the bulk of the work in moving the
ball downfield---rushing six times for 29 yards including the last four off-tackle
for the score on the final play of the half. A 12-yard pass from junior quarterback
Taylor HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) to Beers picked up a crucial
first down on a fourth-and-seven play. Eisele's conversion tied it 7-7.
In the waning moments
of the third period and early fourth period the Greyhounds drove 60 yards in
12 plays to set up the game-deciding field goal. Again Woodard was a workhorse
with six carries for 44 yards and three first downs.
Pace had two more opportunities
. . . the first snuffed as Martino deflected a pass from Headley to Haas inside
the five-yard line as senior end Josh KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) and
Zitzmann applied pressure to the quarterback and the second as sophomore cornerback
Bernard SCOTT (St. Petersburg, FL/Admiral Farragut) interrupted another
Headley to Haas aerial.
GREYHOUND NOTES:
the Greyhounds held the Setters to 182 yards of total offense . . . just 61
yards rushing . . . defensively two Greyhounds reached double-figures in tackles:
sophomore middle linebacker Dustin ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie
Hollins) (5-7--12) (his seventh double-figure game this year!) and senior end
Jared KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) (5-5--10) . . . senior wide receiver
Jake Beers (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and sophomore wide receiver David
CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) are the prolific duo in a single season
in Hounds' history with 112 receptions for 1,529 yards breaking the old mark
of 93 set by Billy DeMalia (43) and Eric Mauer (50) in 2000 .
. . Beers with 159 receptions for 1,950 is second only to Eric Mauer '01,
who finished with 2,166 . . . Canney is at 1,440 yards (sixth in Hound annals)
. . . for his career he is at 2,241, seventh Greyhound over 2,000 yards . .

305 in 2000) for 2,204 yards as the first Greyhound to pass for over 2,000 yards
in a season . . . his .531 completion percentage is the third best in Hounds'
history . . . he is also the first with over 2,000 yards of total offense (2,256)
yards . . . freshman running back Herbert WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) scored
60 points the seventh highest total in Hounds' history . . . he has 10 rushing
touchdowns (fourth best in a single season) and ended with 966 yards . . . senior

NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONORS: senior Heather GOSTYLA
(Bloomfield, CT/NW Catholic): in the Worcester City Championship finished second
with a time of 20:57 (5K) leading the Greyhounds to a second-place finish out
of five teams . . . freshman Kyle HIGGINS (Braintree, MA/Braintee): finished
fourth overall in the 8K race with a time of 28:29.
MEN THIRD, WOMEN
FIFTH AT KEENE INVITATIONAL
Saturday, October 4, 2008
KEENE, NH --- Keene State College, as expected, dominated both sides of the
Keene State College Invitational Cross Country championship here Saturday.
The Assumption College men's team paced by freshman Patrick ERBAN (Attleboro,
MA/Bishop Feehan) finished third, while women's team led by senior captain Heather
GOSTYLA (Bloomfield, CT/NW Catholic) was fifth.
Erban, the Greyhounds
most consistent performer this year has either been first or second for his
team in the team's four events. He ran the 8k hilly course in 27:41 to finish
1:22 behind the individual winner, unattached Jason Ayr.
On the women's side
Gostyla has been her team's pacesetter in all four meets to date and ran a 20:32
to finish 1:21 behind the individual pacesetter, Lauren Reddy of Wheaton. Her
time was her second best this season --- only the 19:47 she ran at UMass Dartmouth
was better however the difference in courses has to be factored. UMass Dartmouth
is primarily a flat course, while the Keene course is hilly and rugged.
The Greyhounds are
next in action at the New England Invitational to be held at Franklin Park in
Boston Saturday (October 11, 2008). The men's race starts at 10 a.m., the women's
at 11 a.m.
