CROSS COUNTRY at NE-10 Championships Saturday
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Stonehill College scored 31 unanswered points after giving
up a first-period score en route to a 31-7 win in Northeast-10 Conference football
Saturday.
The Greyhounds
drove 53 yards in just six plays on their first possession to take an early
lead. Sophomore running back Herbert WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) finished
the march with a nifty 18-yard off right tackle and freshman plackicker Zack
OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) added the conversion for a 7-0 advantage
4:12 into the first period.
The
Greyhounds will host Northeast-10 Conference rival AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE
Saturday with Family Day kickoff slated for 1 p.m. The game will be webcast
and can be accessed on the Assumption College athletics web site at www.assumptiongreyhounds.com.

Greyhound sophomore quarterback Josh RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central),
who completed an amazing 19-of-26 passes for just 106 yards in the game, found
sophomore wide receiver Dominique PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) for
eight yards, Woodard scampered for nine and three yards on back-to back carries
and then Ratacik connected with postgraduate tight end Jake LONGENECKER
(Fernandina, FL/Manchester West, NH) for 10 yards and then with Woodard for
five yards before the score.
The Skyhawks
came right back marching 56 yards in six plays as running back Jeff Payne capped
the march with a three-yard off-tackle TD run. Placekicker Brendan Gorey tied
the game with the conversion kick with 7:14 left in the period. Skyhawks' quarterback
Cruz Parsons found wide receiver Chris Palmer for 42 yards to the Assumption
nine to set up the score as Payne scored on his third straight rush. Stonehill
scored a pair of touchdowns in the second period and 10 points in the third.
After the
Greyhounds failed on a fourth-down conversion, Stonehill drove 77 yards in 12
plays---their longest drive of the game---capped by a running back Eddie Vachon
three-yard run up-the-middle. Gorey's conversion made it 14-7.Parson
completed a 10-yard strike to Payne and then a 31-yarder over-the-top to the
Assumption 34 on a third-and-nine play to highlight the drive. A 20-yard pass-and-run
to wide receiver David Pringle set up the score.
The Skyhawks
scored again with 57 seconds remaining in the half as Parsons dove in from a
yard out. He completed a pass for 35 yards to Palmer and then scampered 19 yards
on his own to highlight the march. Gorey again converted to make it 21-7.
The Greyhounds'
Okolowitcz was wide left on a career- and season-long 41 yard field goal attempt
on the final play of the half. A 30-yard kickoff return by freshman Mitch
RAIOLA (Bristol, RI/Mount Hope), a 13-yard keeper by Ratacik and two Ratacik-to-Price
hookups for eight and nine yards put the Greyhounds in position for the attempt.
Linebacker
Greg Sanzari intercepted Ratacik to set up the next score---a 27 yard field
goal by Gorey. A fumble recovery by lineman Andrew Lesko set up the final score---a
27-yard Parsons-to-wide receiver Corey Wright touchdown pass. Gorey's conversion
accounted for the final.

LAST YEAR'S
GAME: American International 28, Assumption 7
October 13, 2007
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --- Senior running back Calvin Hall rushed 19 times
for a career-best 180 yards and a touchdown as American International College
defeated Assumption College, 28-7, in Northeast-10 Conference football at Miller
Field. The Yellow Jackets scored on the second play of their first possession
and then added two more scores in the final three minutes of the half.
Standouts
for the Greyhounds included defensive tackle Terry Stanford, who blocked a Greyhound
record three field goal attempts in the game, and linebacker Jeff Moore who
blocked a punt. Moore, as the up-back blocker, also ran for a first down on
a fake fourth-down play for the second straight week. Stanford had back to-back
field goal blocks in the second period.
Junior safety
Chris MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) enjoyed his fourth consecutive
double-figure tackle game (and fifth this season) with 5-7--12, while sophomore
middle linebacker had his fourth double-digure game (3-8--11) and has 31 in
the last two games.
Defensive
end Jared Kelly '08 ended with 3-6--9 tackles and shared three sacks
with his brother, defensive end Josh Kelly '08. Josh finished with a
pair of breakups while the pair combined for six quarterback pressures.
The Yellow
Jackets struck quickly moving 70 yards in three plays on the first possession.
Quarterback Rob Parent opened with a 15-yard screen pass to wide out Kertis
Husey and then Hall scampered 55 yards for a touchdown on the second play. Placekicker
Marek Prezbylek made the conversion for a 7-0 advantage.
The ensuing
series for the Greyhounds was their best drive of the first half moving 49 yards
in nine plays---ending with a punt. The Hounds would block two field goals attempts
by the Yellow Jackets before A.I.C. put two scores on the board in the waning
moments of the half.
Late in the
second period the Yellow Jackets drove 49 yards in nine plays led by Hall---four
carries for 33 yards. Parent capped the march with two-yard sneak to make it
14-0 (with Prezbylek's conversion).
On the second
play of the next Hounds' possession linebacker Terrence Holley intercepted junior
quarterback Terry HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte)--- one of three
by Humphrey---and returned it 30 yards for a score 28 seconds after the previous
score. Prezbylek's conversion made it 21-0 at the half.
The teams
then played a scoreless third period. American International had a third field
goal blocked ending an 11-play, 64-yard drive, while the Hounds were stymied
on downs twice and finally another interception.
The Yellow
Jackets would then convert that drive-ending interception by defensive back
Allen Bush into an insurance touchdown driving 69 yards in 16 plays culminating
in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Parent to junior wide receiver Tyler Scaccia
(8 receptions, 97 yards). Prezbylek's conversion made it 28-0.
Humphrey led
the Greyhounds to their lone touchdown in the final minutes. A 24-yard pass
to senior wide out Jake Beers and subsequent completions to sophomore tight
end Matt THIBEAULT (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg/Worcester Academy) for eight
yards and to sophomore wide receiver David CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett)
for 19 yards to the Jacket's six highlighted the drive. Humphrey scored from
six yards out on a designed keeper and senior plackicker Jon Eisele '08 kicked
the conversion.
GREYHOUND
