FOOTBALL at Stonehill Saturday
GOLF at New Englands this weekend!
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College made its women's swimming home debut
a memorable one FRIDAY night at the Plourde Recreation Center pool.
The Greyhounds led by freshmen Kristen NORRIS (Ansonia, CT/Ansonia)
Jill CAPADANNO (Dracut, MA/Dracut) defeated crosstown rival WPI, 137-125.
Capadanno ended with 24.75 points and Norris with 23.75 points as first-year
swimmers dominated for the Greyhounds with 101 of the 137 points.
WPI was led by double winners including Toni LaBella in the 100-yard backstroke
(1:08.03) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:28.82) and Alana Aubin in the 100-butterfly
(1:05.03) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:52.46).

last year's club standards.

Greyhounds sophomore quarterback
Josh RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Manchester Central) completed 21-of-37 passes
for 162 yards scored one touchdown and passed for another. Sophomore running
back Herbert WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) rushed for 74 yards and senior
wide out Joey FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) caught seven passes
for 87 yards and became the ninth Greyhound with over 1,000 receiving yards.
He now has caught 93 passes (fifth on the Hounds' list) for 1,043 yards (eighth
on the Hounds' list).
The game started on a downnote
right away for the Greyhounds as freshman Mitch RAIOLA (Bristol, RI/Mount
Hope) returned the opening kickoff a career best 43 yards to the Pace 48 however
a fumbled forced and recovered by Jadiel Javier put the Setters on offense.
Quarterback Ray Gregg found
wide receiver Pat Olchovy for 17 yards and a first down and then found Ford
for 33 yards and the score. Sophomore Ali Mourtada kicked the conversion with
13:37 left.
The Setters then drove
the second-half kickoff 56 yards in five plays to make it 14-0. Gregg connected
with Ford for 14 and 12 yards and a pair of first downs before finding Olchovy
open over-the-top on a 27-yard touchdown strike. Mourtada kicked the conversion.
Late in the third period
the Greyhounds got on the board as the defense set them up inside the one as
junior middle linebacker Dustin ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins)
recovered for Assumption. Ratacik scampered around left end for the touchdown
and freshman Zack OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) kicked the
conversion to cut the deficit in half.
In the fourth period the Setters were in the midst of a 13-play, 55-yard drive
which stalled at the Greyhounds' 18. Mourtada's 35-yard field goal attempt was
stuffed by Scott and recovered at the 41-yard line.
The Greyhounds then drove
59 yards in seven plays to deadlock the game at 14-14. A fake punt play from
sophomore quarterback Andy KUPEC (Wyckhoff, NJ/Indian Hills) to Fabiano
for 31 yards was the key play in the march. Sophomore running back Kevin
FLANAGAN (Gardner, MA/Gardner) then rushed eight yards on a left counter
and Ratacik found sophomore wide out Dominique PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy
Name) for 18 more yards. A 13-yard strike to Fabiano and Okolowitcz conversion
tied the game.
After each team went three-and-out, Pace drove 57 yards in eight plays to account
for the game-winning points.
Gregg found wide receiver
Eric Ortega for 14 yards and then tight end Andrew Kulak for 35 yards to the
Assumption seven. Ford rushed three times before getting into the endzone on
a straight dive frm two yards out. Mourtada's conversion made it a seven-point
game.
The Greyhounds' last-gasp
effort lasted 10 plays and 63 yards and ended with a final play in-and-out of
the hands of Fabiano in a crowd in the endzone. Ratacik found sophomore wide
receiver Marcus NICHOLS (Salem, NJ/Salem) for 23 yards, Fabiano for 17
yards, 11 and 16 yards to highlight the march.

LAST YEAR'S GAME: Stonehill
20, Assumption 14
September 7, 2007
WORCESTER, Mass. --- It was a game of missed opportunities for Assumption
College. Stonehill College opened its new season under new coach Robert Talley
and escaped with a 20-14 Northeast-10 Conference victory at the Multi-Sports
Stadium.
The Greyhounds had the
ball on the Stonehill 14 with 1:23 left, the second straight drive which ended
on the doorstep of the endzone. The Skyhawks linebacker Mike DeBye ended the
drive with an interception at the seven. The previous drive ended with an incomplete
pass in the endzone also on fourth-down.
The Greyhounds got a solid
defensive effort from sophomore linebacker Dustin ZITZMANN (Pinellas
Park, FL/Dixie Hollins), who had 15 tackles (7 solo) for the second straight
game. Sophomore wide out David CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) caught
10 for 105 yards and now has 19 receptions for 266 yards in two games.
Stonehill moved to a 7-0
lead taking advantage of a bad punt snap resulting in their drive starting at
the Assumption 20. Running back Eddie Vachon did all the work rushing first
for nine yards and then untouched for 11 more and the first TD of the game.
Sean Donahue kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
On their next possession
the Skyhawks drove 39 yards in nine plays and Donahue kicked a 37 yards field
goal with no time remaining to make it 10-0. Two rushes by Jeffery Payne for
21 yards and Vachon added two more for 24 yards to highlight the short march.
Stonehill would then take
the opening kickoff of the second half --- an apparent onside kick recovered
by up-man Joe Forte at the Hounds 44. Quarterback Cruz Parsons fired a 44-yard
slant pass to wide out David Pringle for the score. Donahue's conversion made
it 17-0.
In the third period the
Hounds drove 28 yards in five plays after a short punt out of the endzone. Jay
Youngblood finished the march with a two yard slant with 5:26 remaining. Senior
Jon EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy) kicked the conversion.
The Hounds defense would
then make a key stop as Stonehill drove the ensuing series 64 yards in eight
plays to the 12. A touchdown saving tackle by senior Mike O'NEILL (Worcester,
MA/St. Peter-Marian) forced the Skyhawks to settle for a 29-yard field goal
by Donahue and a 20-7 advantage.
The Hounds then made it
interesting as the fourth period started. Junior quarterback Taylor HUMPHREY
(Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) completed passes of 9 yards to sophomore tight end
Matt THIBEAULT (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg/Worcester Academy) 17 yards to
sophomore wide out David CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) and then
two to senior wide out Brian CAREY (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro) for eight
yards and the final 35 yards for the score. Eisele's conversion made it a six-point
game, 20-14.

New Haven sophomore midfielder
