four Northeast-10 Conference playoff appearances and two league championships
(2002, 2000).

third-team Northeast-10 Conference honors. He was the team Most Valuable Player

GOLFER
STEVE WOLAK NAME ALL-NEW ENGLAND
Assumption College sophomore STEVE WOLAK (North Grosvenordale, CT/Tourtellotte)
has been named to the Division II New England Intercollegiate Golf Association
all-star team. Wolak finished the fall season with a 79.0 medal average for
nine rounds including a low round of 74.
The 2008 Greyhounds were
led by its "super sophomores." Forward STEPHEN BLAISDELL (Peabody, MA/Bishop
Fenwick) led the team in scoring (8-1--19 points) (the ninth-leading scorer
in the conference) with three-game winners and midfielder JEFFERY SWAN
(Fairfield, CT/Fairfield-Ludlowe) (2-4--8 points). Goalkeeper BRANDON SULLIVAN

against Saint Anselm Tuesday. Senior forward PAUL MURPHY (Wilbraham,
MA/Minnechaug), a conference all-star in 2007, finished with 2-1--5 points.
Bonomo credited a total-team
effort pointing out that many players had to switch postions because of a number
of injuries. He singled out his troika of center midfielders including freshman
JUSTIN PUGLIESE (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke) (2-0--4), sophomore PATRICK
LINDBERG (Holliston, MA/Holliston) (2-1--5) and junior CURTIS ALVORD

Mel McKee named men's lacrosse coach
WORCESTER, Mass. --- MEL MC KEE of Ashland, MA, the No. 1 assistant coach
for the past three seasons, has been named the head coach of Assumption College
men's lacrosse program. McKee replaces Mark Kelley, who resigned for personal
reasons, late last week. The announcement was made by Ted Paulauskas, Director
of Athletics.
He was been the offensive
coordinator and goalkeeper coach for the past three seasons under Kelley. Over
that span the Greyhounds improved in most categories including goals per game,
assists per game, total points per game and shooting percentage. The team finished
second in the Northeast-10 Conference in extra-man goals and success percentage
in 2008.
A long time successful
high school head coach at Marian High School (Framingham, MA) (2006) and Ashland
High School (1997 2005), McKee was named assistant men's lacrosse coach at the
College in November 2005.
He previously posted a
79-67 overall record at Ashland High in its first years of existence. He led
the team to four Eastern Massachusetts tournament appearances in eight varsity
seasons including the No. 1 seed in the Division 2 tournament in 2000. He was
named the Boston Globe Eastern Mass. Division 2 Coach-of-the-Year and
the Metro Central Coach-of-the-Year in 2000.
He was also the founder of the Ashland Youth Lacrosse program and its coach
and is a member of the Eastern Mass. Lacrosse Coaching Association (1997-06)
and US Lacrosse (since 1999). He played on the Brine Lacrosse Club and a member

The
Greyhounds took the opening kickoff and marched downfield, driving 60 yards
in 16 plays and chewing 7:32 off the clock. A 25-yard pass from sophomore quarterback
ANDY KUPEC (Wyckhoff, NJ/Indian Hills) to senior wide receiver JOEY
FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) highlighted the march, which ended with
freshman placekicker ZACK OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) missing
wide right on a 23-yard field goal attempt.
On their second possession,
the Owls moved in for a quick touchdown marching 66 yards in just five plays.
Roberts found senior wide receiver Jonathan Lee for 10 yards, sophomore running
back John Wiechmann rambled for 12 yards and, finally, Roberts connected with
Bergeski for 30 yards and for 15 yards and the score with 1:51 left in the first
period. Freshman placekicker Chris Hazelton kicked the conversion for a 7-0
advantage.
In the waning minutes of
the half, the Greyhounds finally struck paydirt as sophomore quarterback JOSH
RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central) found Fabiano on a 13-yard touchdown strike
on a crossing pattern. The conversion attempt failed leaving the Owls up by
a point 6:49 left in the half.
On the ensuing series,
the Owls scored again as Roberts and Bergeski hooked up on a 26-yard scoring
play on a post pattern. Hazelton's conversion gave Southern a 14-6 halftime
lead.
The second half began with
the Owls driving toward an insurance score. Junior return man Ramon Johnson
returned the kickoff 28 yards to the 37 knocked out of bounds by Okolowitcz.
Roberts then found senior wide receiver Ty Marshall on back-to-back plays for
12 and five yards and then Weichman rushed for eight and six yards to the Greyhounds'
six-yard line. Roberts next pass however was picked off by Martino and returned
99 yards for a touchdown. The two-point attempt by the Greyhounds failed leaving
the score, 14-12, with 2:21 left in the third period. The interception extended
Martino's career varsity record to 11.
On the next possession
however the Owls put it away with methodical 11 play, 70-yard march capped by
a junior tailback Jerom Freeman three-yard burst up-the-middle. Freeman rushed
six times for 40 yards in the march and Roberts completed four-of-five passes
for 30 yards. Hazelton's conversion made it an nine point game, 21-12. Roberts
tossed a five-yard scoring pass to Wiechman with 3:10 remaining to account for
the final.

THIS YEAR'S FIRST MEETING:
Merrimack 30, Assumption 28
September 19, 2008
Merrimack College parlayed the superb efforts of sophomore quarterback
Kurt Leone, freshman running back Anthony Smalls and junior wide receiver Jeremiah
Watts en route to a hold-on 30-28 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Assumption
College in North Andover, MA.
Leone completed 21 of 35
passes for 364 yards and two touchdowns, Watts caught a career-high 12 passes
for 184 yards and a score and Smalls rushed 25 times for a career-high 135 yards
and a touchdown.
The Greyhounds' sophomore
HERBERT WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) was a one-man show. Woodard rushed
16 times for 95 yards and two scores, caught four passes for 33 yards and returned
a punt 85 yards for a third score. The 85-yard punt return in the first period
is the longest in Hounds' history breaking the old mark of 84 yards set by Ty
Smith '72 on the very first return in Assumption annals vs. Hartford (November
7, 1969). He finished with 213 yards of all-purpose offense---his second career
game with over 200 yards.
Merrimack opened the scoring
on the very first play of the game as Leone took a pitchback from Smalls and
heaved a 69-yard scoring strike to senior wide receiver Chris Laham. Junior
placekicker Sean Garvey made the conversion for a 7 0 lead.
On the Greyhounds' third play Woodard raced 53 yards for a touchdown up the-middle
and freshman ZACK OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) kicked the
game-tying conversion at 13:15.
Garvey would kick a 40-yard
field goal with 3:02 left in the first period to give Merrimack the lead for
good at 10-7. They would then drive 72 yards in just four plays to move to a
nine-point advantage (16-7). Two plays dominated the drive as Leone found Watts
for 37 yards and a first down to the 35 and then Smalls raced 32 yards for the
score.
Woodard set the punt return
record in the second period as the Greyhounds with Okolowitcz' conversion cut
the gap to two points, 16-14.
Merrimack however would
drive 64 yards in nine plays to lead 23-14. Leone passed to Watts (24 yards)
and junior wide out Ryan DiGregorio (26 yards) before finding Watts again for
14 yards and a touchdown. Garvey hit the upright on another field goal attempt
from 36 yards with nine seconds left in the half.
In the third period Merrimack
extended their lead to 30-14 driving 88 yards in eight plays. Leone found senior
wide out Chris McNeil for 33 yards and a first down and Smalls rushed for 23
yards to highlight the drive. Junior running back Richard Johnson finished the
drive with an eight-yard burst up-the-middle for the score.
Woodard capped a 66-yard,
14-play march with a three-yard sprint to the corner of the endzone. He rushed
for 30 yards on eight carries to highlight the drive. Sophomore quarterback
JOSH RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central) then found sophomore wide out DOMINIQUE
PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) on an alley-oop pass for the two-point conversion
making it a one-possession game at 30-22 with 44 seconds left in the third period.
A tipped pass by freshman
defensive back GEOFFREY MOCK (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) on a fourth
down play stopped a Merrimack drive with 3:02 left in the game giving the Greyhounds
one final attempt to tie.
The Greyhounds would drive
70 yards in six plays as Ratacik found sophomore wide receiver MARK GATELY
(Waltham, MA/Waltham) for 48 yards and then hit senior wide out JOEY FABIANO
(Westwood, MA/Westwood) for a 19 yards and a touchdown---Fabiano make a diving
catch in the corner of the endzone. The conversion pass was thwarted as freshman
linebacker Tony Johnson and junior linebacker Shane Brown pressured Ratacik.
The Hounds were led defensively
by junior linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins)
with 8-4--12 tackles and sophomore defensive back KEITH BATES (Holden,

WELCH (Southington, CT/Southington) hurried Temple into an incompletion
on the third down play.
The Greyhounds then drove
onthe ensuing series 69 yards in seven plays. After sophomore DAVID CANNEY
(Templeton, MA/Narragansett) returned the kickoff 24 yards to the 31, Humphrey
rushed 11 yards on keeper on the first play and hit junior wide receiver JOEY
FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) for 14, eight yards on back-to-back plays.
Canney then fired a 23-yard option play touchdown pass to Fabiano. Senior placekicker
JON EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy) kicked the conversion
for a 7-3 lead.
The teams traded interceptions,
first Martino picking off Temple at the Greyhounds 31, and then the Warriors
sophomore corner Sam Belvines returned the favor on the first play going the
other way for 34 yards and touchdown (Garvey kicked the conversion) to give
Merrimack at 10-7 advantage.
And, then Woodward scampered
75 yards on the second play of the ensuing series (Eisele converted) as the
Greyhounds regained the lead, 14-10, with 3:48 left. Woodard is now the only
back in Greyhounds history to have more than one run of 70+ yards from scrimmage.
Accomplished just eight times in their history Woodard has done it twice---also
running 75 yards for a score against Saint Anselm (9-15-07).
Merrimack completed the
offensive first period dirving 60 yards in just four plays to again take the
lead, 17-14. Temple completed passes of eight yards to senior tight end Sean
McFee, 10 yards to junior wide receiver Jawara Loftis and finally 39 yards to
Laham for the score. Garvey kicked the conversion.
Eisele would kick two second-period
field goals, the second with just two seconds remaining to usher the Greyhounds
in front 20-17 at the halftime break. It was the first time in his career kicking
two in one game.
In a long time-consuming
16-play, 56-yard drive Humphrey and Woodard led the Greyhounds into range for
Eisele. Woodward rushed six times for 24 yards and Humphrey completed four-of-five
passes for 32 yards.
A second interception by
Martino and subsequent 22-yard return to the Assumption 49 yard line set the
Greyhounds up for the go-ahead points.
Humphrey completed passes
of 24 yards to Beers, 15 yards to sophomore tight end MATT THIBEAULT
(Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg/Worcester Academy) to highlight the march. Eisele kicked
a 20-yard field goal with 25 seconds left but a Merrimack personal foul penalty
(roughing the kicker) set the Hounds up with a first and-goal at the one. Eisele
kicked the field goal again from 20 yards after two rushes and an incomplete
pass failed to find the endzone.
Merrimack took the lead
with a third-period touchdown as Temple connecteed with Loftis on an 11-yard
slant (Garvey converted) with 7:32 remaining and then added insurance in the
fourth period as Garvey kicked a 34-yard field goal and sophomore running back
Mike Young scored from two yards out with 2:18 left in the fourth period.
Temple completed passes
of 10 yards to Loftis, 10 yards to senior tight end Ryan Salter and finally
11 more yards to Loftis for the score in the third period.
A fumble recovery by Belvines
stopped the Greyhounds on the ensuing series and started the Warriors on a 13-play,
55-yard drive culminating in the Garvey field goal. Temple found Laham for 14
yardsm Salter for 10, Laham for 17 more and 12 yards to junior wide receiver
Chris McNeill to highlight the march.
A Temple-to-Laham 45-yard
pass play on a third-and-seven play to the Assumption two-yard line set up the
final Merrimack touchdown.
GREYHOUNDS NOTES:
senior wide out JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) now has 35 receptions
for 433 yards this season, bringing his career totals to 143 catches for 1,724
yards . . . the 143 yards is the new career record while the 1,724 yards passed
Don Kinney (1985-88) (1,686) for second-place . . . Eric Mauer (1997-2000) finished
his career with both records (140 receptions) and (2,166 receiving yards) .
. . Beers has caught a pass in 21 straight games . . . sophomore wide receiver
DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) (44 receptions, 595 yards)
now has caught at least one pass in every game (18) in his career . . . he is
on target to break the single-season mark of 51 (held by Beers from last year)
and also reach 100 receptions (76 to date) and 1,000 yards (913 to date) for
his career . . . no sophomore has ever reached 1,000 career receiving yards
. . . junior quarterback TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) is
also rewriting the Hounds record book . . . he has completed 124-of-234 passes
for 1,513 yards and nine touchdowns in his first year with the Greyhounds .
. . he is the eight Hound to reach 200 attempts, the eighth to reach 100 completions
(his 124 is fourth just 23 behind Chad Carges record of 147, 2000) .
. . his 1,513 yards is the fourth-best in Hounds' history, just 289 yards behind
Carges' record of 1,802 in 1999 . . . his 1,533 yards of total offense is the
fourth-best in Hounds history . . . his 25 completions are the second most in
Hounds history two behind Carges record of 27 at Saint Anselm (10-2-99) . .
. Jamie Tucker (at Merrimack, 10-16-04, 25-for 47) and Carges (vs. A.I.C.,
10-7-00, 25-for-46) also had 25 completions . . . freshman running back HERBERT
WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) has now rushed 94 times for 652 yards, averaging
6.9 yards per rush, with seven touchdowns . . . he is the lone back in Hounds'
history to have more than one rush for 70 yards from scrimmage in a career having
run 75 yards for a score versus Saint Anselm (9-15-07) . . . before this year
you have to go back to 1995 when Chris Allegro ran 80 yards for a score against
Western New England (9-23-95) . . . his 652 yards is the 17th best in Hounds
history with three games to play . . .

MEN'S
BASKETBALL
COACH: Serge DE
BARI (Assumption '71)
CAPTAINS: Mitch BAJEMA '09 and Patrick SHEA '09
RECORD TO DATE: Won 0, Lost 0
NORTHEAST-10 TO DATE: Won 0, Lost 0
The
Hounds: N.E. Division II's all-time winningest . . . 1,014 wins!
LAST YEAR: the reviews for the third year in the second coach SERGE
DEBARI '71 regime were all raves. The team had four players average in double
figures in a well-balanced offense and they consistently outrebounded their
opponents.
They finished 24-11 as
the most improved team in the region and advanced to the final of both the Northeast-10
Conference and N.C.A.A. Division II regional tournaments---not bad for a team
picked to finish 10th by the Northeast-10 Conference coaches in its preseason
poll. They won their 1,000th game vs. Post, CT (64-62 on December 29, 2007),
won two of three games in the Disney Classic, won both games at the Bryant Mixer
and owned wins over nationally ranked L.I.U.-C.W. Post (73-71), Philadelphia
(80-65 and 60-59) and North Alabama (85-78). And, they received enough votes
in the final national poll to make them 26th overall.
THE NON-RETURNERS:
DeBari will miss the services of Northeast-10 Conference all-star forward/center
Corey Diethorn '08 (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy), now playing in
England, forward Mike Foti '08 (Franklin, MA/Franklin), forward Alex
Popp '08 (Winchester, MA/Winchester). Diethorn led the team averaging 14.6
points and 8.6 rebounds and shooting .509 from the floor, while leading the
Northeast-10 Conference in blocked shots (77). He finished his career with 1,175
points and 717 rebounds, 162 blocked shots and .512 floor accuracy. Foti averaged
10.4 points and 3.4 rebounds and led the squad with 52 three-pointers ending
his career with 887 points and 124 three-pointers. while Popp proved a valuable
resource off-the-bench. Another senior, guard Leroy Byron '08, missed
all of last year with an injury and ended his career with 712 points.
RETURNING NUCLEUS:
DeBari will mold the 2008-09 Greyhounds around a host of returning standouts.
Postgraduate forward/two-year captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable),
the Hounds' resident work-a holic and Northeast-10 Conference third-team all-star,
led the team with 1,195 minutes, averaged 12.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and shot
.467 from the floor. He was spectacular (25 points, 7 assists) in an overtime
win at Merrimack (92-91) and followed with 18 points, 12 rebounds in a win over
nationally ranked L.I.U.-C.W. Post (73-71) on-the-road. The leading scorer in
the 1,000-win game vs. Post (19 points), he saved his best effort for the last
game against Bentley in the regional final with 18 second-half points helping
to rally the team from a 17-point deficit (52-35) to within four points (64-60)
over a 10-minute stretch. He finished with 23 double figure scoring games and
became the 35th Greyhound to reach the 1,000-point mark (1,061 and counting).
He also became the first forward in Hounds' history since 1972-73 to have over
100 assists (123) in a season. Dan Small has 103 in 1972-73 and his coach had
136 in his senior year (1970-71).
Senior guard/forward/captain
PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem), who at times is a deft passing machine
and at other times shows signs of being a premier perimeter shooter, is easily
the team's "resident statmaker" along with being its top defender. He averaged
9.2 points and led the team with 159 assists, was second in minutes (1,134),
rebounds (7.3), steals (43), blocks (34). He opened the season with a 16 point,
six-assist performance in a win over Philadelphia, had 18 points, six rebounds
in a win over Franklin Pierce and 15 points, six assists in the first postseason
win over Massachusetts Lowell. He had a season-high 13 rebounds in the regional
win over Holy Family and nine assists in a grueling overtime win at Merrimack.
Junior guard COURTLAND
BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti) is the team catalyst
and averaged 10.0 points (fourth on the team) in 1,130 minutes (third on the
team) and team-leading 63 steals with 17 double figure games. His top game was
21 points, five assists in the regional win over Holy Family and also had 19
points in a win at Southern New Hampshire.
Senior point guard/captain
MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) averaged 6.1 points
with 38 three-pointers (second on the team). He had 17 points with five three-pointers
in 72-44 postseason win at Saint Rose. Sophomore forward MIKE BALDARELLI
(Sutton, MA/Holy Name) averaged 6.7 points off-the-bench with 37 three-pointers
and had 28 points in a win at Southern New Hampshire and 20 points in a win
over Saint Michael's.
Sophomore guard DOMINIQUE
PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), who also plays football, adds more athleticism
and impressed with more playing time down-the-stretch last year, junior forward
RENAN MALAFAIA (Watertown, CT/Newton, MA North/Taft adds athleticism
up front and is shot blocker/rebounder, senior forward MAREK KULIG (Brick,
NJ/Msgr. Donovan), senior guard WALTER WEEKES (Worcester, MA/Holy Name)
and sophomore forward TOBIN HAASE (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Park) have
impressed in preseason workouts.
NEW PEOPLE: 6-foot-6,
200-pound guard/forward SHACHAR BIRENDORF (Petch Tiqva, Israel/Head Haam
High), a teammate of former Greyhounds' standout Shahar Golan '05 on
the Ramt Hepal team in Israel, is a physical No. 3 or 4 who can play both inside
and out and contribute in all areas of the game. As a senior in high school
averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds as his team advanced to the state tournament.
Combo guard KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) is a take-charge
lefty, who will bring depth to the perimeter game. He scored 1,714 points in
high school and had four straight 30-point games in the Hall of Fame Spring
Classic including 42 against Albany City. Forward (6-foot-6, 190-pound) JEFF
STEWART (Herndon, VA/Flint Hill School) is explosive and equally adept inside
and out. He averaged 14 points, 11 rebounds as a senior and played in the Jabbar
Kennder League all-star game. Samford University transfer (6 foot-7, 205-pounds)
SAVOY FRAINE (Granada Hills, CA/Granada Hills) is a high energy player,
standout defender and rebounder. He averaged 18.6 points, 12 rebounds, 6 blocks
as a senior at Granada Hills and earned second-team all-Los Angeles and ranked
third in the California in blocks as senior. Finally, 6-foot-6, 230 pount forward
TIM BEINERT (Bellrose Village, NY/Holy Cross) is a cerebral post/power
forward who can score inside and is an accomplished three-point shooter. He
averaged 11 points, 10 rebounds as his team won the city and CHSAA state titles.
THIS YEAR: DeBari
will build the team in the same mold of the many successful Greyhound teams
of the past. Expect the team to lead the conference in diving on-the-floor and
expect them to play physical and aggressive defense.
He is asking Bluford to
upgrade his offensive production, while Twomey needs to do what he does best,
create an atmosphere of hard-work. Key man is Shea, who has shown signs of being
the top perimeter player on the squad, and at other times the team's best passer.
There is little doubt of his versatility and his defensive prowess.
Offense predicated off
switching defenses is always the order of the day with the more-than-occasional
three thrown in. The Hounds are now as athletic as any team in the conference
and have added considerable depth which will make them a tough assignment on
any given night. Expect this team to be in the conference chase and eventually
go to the NCAA regional tournament at season's end.

Greyhounds
Optimistic About Return to N.C.A.A. Post-Season!
LAST YEAR: the reviews were basically raves for the Greyhounds as they enjoyed
their fourth 20-win season en route to the N.C.A.A. regional tournament for
the third time in the KERRY PHAYRE regime. The team started fast winning
two of three at the Disney Classic, then sweeping the Marriott Courtyard Classic
at home, the San Diego Surf 'N Slam and, finally, parading into the national
poll with a nifty team-record nine-game win streak into mid-January.
The major catalyst in the
equation was senior forward/captain and Northeast 10 Conference all-star Charde
Floyd (Worcester, MA/Doherty) (9.1 ppg, 9.6 reb), who became merely the
fourth player in Greyhound women's history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
Only a late-season injury put a serious crimp in the team's chances to reach
the Elite Eight.
Also included in the process
were guard/captain and honorable mention all American/Northeast-10 Conference
all-star BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee), who led the team averaging
15.0 points with 49 three-pointers and joining the century club in free throws
(106-for-130) . . . point TRISH GARDNER (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth),
easily the most underrated player in the Northeast-10 Conference, was the team
leader on-the-floor with 172 assists (fifth best in Hounds' history) and 949
minutes . . . forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) earned all-Northeast-10
Conference freshman team honors, averaging 9,2 points and making 30 three-pointers
and guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock Academy) emerged
as a major factor in San Diego averaging 6.3 points off-the-bench.
THE NON-RETURNERS:
Phayre will first deal with the loss of the aforementioned Charde Floyd
. . . Floyd scored 1,212 points and added 1,056 rebounds, 246 steals and .568
floor accuracy in a brilliant future Hall of Famer career . . . 6-foot-3 reserve
forward/center Megan Urban (Portland, ME/Deering) (7.7 ppg, 4.4
reb) ended her career with 812 career points, 460 rebounds and .516 floor accuracy
. . . and reserve guard/captain Britt Bishop (Mendon, MA/Nimuc) one of
the top defensive players on the squad and reserve forward Sara Czarnecki
(Cumberland, RI/Cumberland), who averaged 3.7 points and 4.3 points with
solid minutes down-the-stretch, was the team's leading rebounder six times off-the-bench.
RETURNING NUCLEUS:
Phayre will mold the 2008-09 Greyhounds around their irrepressible senior backcourt
tandem of Plasski and Gardner. The duo played more minutes than anyone else
on the team for a reason.
Try these stats for openers:
Plasski led the team 13 times in scoring and the team finished 11-2 in those
games . . . Gardner led the team 23 times in assists and the team finished 19-4
and when they both led the team in their respective categories the team was
unbeaten (11-0).
Plasski, the Andrew Laska
Award winner as the female athlete-of-the-year at the College, ended with 28
double-figure scoring games (out of 32!) with seven 20 point games. Top performance
was a 25-point gem with 10 steals for her first career double-double against
New Haven in the Surf N Slam; 25 points with four three pointers against NCAA
contender Molloy in the Marriott Classic and 24 points in a 30-point blow out
of now Division I Bryant. She also joined the 1,000-point club and currently
resides at 1,058 along with being the career free throw leader at .810 (248-for-306)
and among the career leaders with 114 treys.
Gardner is the Hounds'
on-court general and the only player to start all 32 games last year. Her top
game was 13 points, making six-of-eight from the floor, in a buzzer-beating
win at Southern New Hampshire (it was her trey that won it). She finished second
in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.95).
Junior forward KAYLA
PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford), a conference all freshman performer the previous
season, averaged 10.4 points and 5.0 rebounds. She poured in a career-best 27
points (10-for-17 from the floor) in a win over Saint Anselm and two games later
added 22 points with a trio of three-pointers in an 18 point win over NCAA powerhouse
Bentley College. She also had 23 points in another win over an NCAA regional
team Molloy and finished with 19 double-figure games. With 604 points, she is
on her way to the magical 1,000-point mark.
Mobile sophomore swing
MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) adds considerable perimeter
scoring punch and chipped in with 15 double-figure games. Her top efforts included
a 20-point gem at UMass Lowell, an 18-point, 12-rebound effort versus Merrimack
for her first double-double and 18 points vs. Lander, SC in the Disney Classic.
Junior guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock), the Hounds'
resident perpetual motion machine, burst on-the scene with 39 points in back-to-back
efforts in the San Diego Surf N Slam. She had a career-high 23 points in a romp
over New Haven and had 16 the next night in a solid win over Slippery Rock.
Guards AMANDA SHEEHY
(Jr., Linden, NJ/Rosell Catholic) (2.3 ppg), MAEGAN COOK (Jr., Braintree,
MA/Braintree) (2.1 ppg), JACKIE BRANCA (J.r, Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson)
(0.8 ppg) and point THERESA AMELIO (So., Bronx, NY/Preston) add depth
to the backcourt. Athletic forward PAM MOBLEY (So., Worcester, MA/Doherty),
brings a dominant defensive personality and rebounder to the equation.
NEW PEOPLE: guard
BRITTANY COHEN (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville DeWitt) was a three-time
all-league selection and averaged 17 points and five assists, forward NICOLE
LEPREVOST (Lee, MA/Lee) led her team to the Western Mass. Division III title
three times and forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) scored
1,632 points with over 800 rebounds in high school and averaged 25 points and
11 rebounds as a senior.
THIS YEAR: Phayre
will build the 2008-09 Greyhounds in the same mold of her many successful teams
of the past and therefore expect the Hounds to lead the league in physical and
aggressive defense.
This team however will be dominated by guard play as Plasski and Gardner are
as good a tandem as there is in the Northeast-10 Conference. Parker, Griffiths
and Lupien provide additional solid scoring punch, while the newcomers should
all provide solid depth.
One exciting sidelight
will be Coach Phayre's approach of the magical 200-win mark here at the College
(she's just three away).
When it's over expect the
Greyhounds to be in the conference chase all the way and go deep in the playoffs.
And, another shot at an NCAA berth is well within grasp.
