Women's
basketball stops Holy Cross in exhibition, 67-54
WORCESTER, MA-- Assumption College used
a balanced scoring attack and gritty defense to claim victory over crosstown
rival Holy Cross, 67-54, in an exhibition women's basketball game to benefit
the Mercy Center Tuesday at the Hart Center. Sophomore/forward MOLLY GRIFFTIHS
(Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) led the Greyhounds with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Senior captain/point guard TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth/MA) contributed a
solid performance with three points, six rebounds, 10 assists and three steals,
while senior captain/guard BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River/Dufree) added
12 points. Despite dismal first-half shooting, the Greyhounds came out ready
to go in the second half shooting 16-of-30 for 53.3 percent and four-of-eight
from behind the arc. The Greyhounds took the lead at 14:15 on a Griffiths layup
and never looked back. Freshman/forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin)
had a strong performance off-the-bench scoring nine points and collecting a
game-high eight rebounds. The Hounds open their regular-season Saturday against

HONORED THIS WEEK ON NE-10 HONOR ROLLS
FOOTBALL:
senior wide receiver JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood);
ICE HOCKEY: sophomore forward MATT ST. PIERRE (Alexandria, VA/Bishop
Ireton) was the Player-of-the-Week and junior JAMIE DIGIULIO (Peabody,

Merrimack got on the board
at the end of the first half as the Greyhounds missed a scoring opportunity
on a missed 25-yard field goal attempt. The Warriors drove 80 yards in six plays
with Suozzo pitching a two-yard scoring pass to Jackson with 11 seconds left.
Placekicker Pedrom Tand made the conversion for a 7-0 lead. Jake Manning rushed
16 yards up-the-middle to start the march and Suozzo completed a 54-yard bomb
to Jackson to give the Warriors a first and goal at the five.
The Warriors then struck
quickly in the third period as Suozzo found Loftis on a 51-yard scoring strike
on the first play. Tand made the conversion for a 14-0 lead.
When the Greyhounds' senior
linebacker DAN HICKEY (Auburn, MA/Auburn) partially blocked a Tand punt,
the Assumption offense roared-to-life and marched 45 yards in five plays for
its only score. Sophomore quarterback JOSH RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central)
completed three passes to Fabiano for seven, eight and 16 yards---the final
for the score. Sophomore running back LANCE MITCHELL (Boynton Beach,
FL/Pope John Paul II) scampered twice for five and nine yards and freshman ZACK
OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) kicked the conversion.
Merrimack however came
right back on its next series taking advantage of an onside kick recovered by
Omari Mobley. Suozzo then completed four-of-five passes---three to Watts for
nine, 13 and 11 yards in a five-play, 45-yard drive, capped by a seven-yard
scoring strike to Loftis. Tand's conversion made it 21-7 with 7:50 left in the
third period.
On their next series, the
Warriors marched 74 yards in 11 plays on a drive started after the Greyhounds
were stopped on a fourth-down play. Suozzo completed four-of-six passes for
40 yards and rushed for 25 yards to key the drive and threw a 17-yard scoring
pass to Jackson with 1:16 left in the period. Hounds' freshman defensive end
KEVIN PICKETTE (Burlington, MA/Burlington) blocked the conversion leaving
the score at 27-7.

The
Hounds: N.E. Division II's all-time winningest . . . 1,014 wins!
LAST YEAR: the reviews for the third year in the second coach
SERGE DEBARI '71 regime were all raves. The team had four players average
in double figures in a well-balanced offense and they consistently outrebounded
their opponents.
They finished
24-11 as the most improved team in the region and advanced to the final of both
the Northeast-10 Conference and N.C.A.A. Division II regional tournaments---not
bad for a team picked to finish 10th by the Northeast-10 Conference coaches
in its preseason poll. They won their 1,000th game vs. Post, CT (64-62 on December
29, 2007), won two of three games in the Disney Classic, won both games at the
Bryant Mixer and owned wins over nationally ranked L.I.U.-C.W. Post (73-71),
Philadelphia (80-65 and 60-59) and North Alabama (85-78). And, they received
enough votes in the final national poll to make them 26th overall.
THE NON-RETURNERS:
DeBari will miss the services of Northeast-10 Conference all-star forward/center
Corey Diethorn '08 (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy), now playing in
England, forward Mike Foti '08 (Franklin, MA/Franklin), forward Alex
Popp '08 (Winchester, MA/Winchester). Diethorn led the team averaging 14.6
points and 8.6 rebounds and shooting .509 from the floor, while leading the
Northeast-10 Conference in blocked shots (77). He finished his career with 1,175
points and 717 rebounds, 162 blocked shots and .512 floor accuracy. Foti averaged
10.4 points and 3.4 rebounds and led the squad with 52 three-pointers ending
his career with 887 points and 124 three-pointers. while Popp proved a valuable
resource off-the-bench. Another senior, guard Leroy Byron '08, missed
all of last year with an injury and ended his career with 712 points.
RETURNING
NUCLEUS: DeBari will mold the 2008-09 Greyhounds around a host of returning
standouts. Postgraduate forward/two-year captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton,
MA/Groton-Dunstable), the Hounds' resident work-a holic and Northeast-10 Conference
third-team all-star, led the team with 1,195 minutes, averaged 12.1 points,
6.1 rebounds and shot .467 from the floor. He was spectacular (25 points, 7
assists) in an overtime win at Merrimack (92-91) and followed with 18 points,
12 rebounds in a win over nationally ranked L.I.U.-C.W. Post (73-71) on-the-road.
The leading scorer in the 1,000-win game vs. Post (19 points), he saved his
best effort for the last game against Bentley in the regional final with 18
second-half points helping to rally the team from a 17-point deficit (52-35)
to within four points (64-60) over a 10-minute stretch. He finished with 23
double figure scoring games and became the 35th Greyhound to reach the 1,000-point
mark (1,061 and counting). He also became the first forward in Hounds' history
since 1972-73 to have over 100 assists (123) in a season. Dan Small has 103
in 1972-73 and his coach had 136 in his senior year (1970-71).
Senior guard/forward/captain
PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem), who at times is a deft passing machine
and at other times shows signs of being a premier perimeter shooter, is easily
the team's "resident statmaker" along with being its top defender. He averaged
9.2 points and led the team with 159 assists, was second in minutes (1,134),
rebounds (7.3), steals (43), blocks (34). He opened the season with a 16 point,
six-assist performance in a win over Philadelphia, had 18 points, six rebounds
in a win over Franklin Pierce and 15 points, six assists in the first postseason
win over Massachusetts Lowell. He had a season-high 13 rebounds in the regional
win over Holy Family and nine assists in a grueling overtime win at Merrimack.
Junior guard
COURTLAND BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti) is the
team catalyst and averaged 10.0 points (fourth on the team) in 1,130 minutes
(third on the team) and team-leading 63 steals with 17 double figure games.
His top game was 21 points, five assists in the regional win over Holy Family
and also had 19 points in a win at Southern New Hampshire.
Senior point
guard/captain MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian)
averaged 6.1 points with 38 three-pointers (second on the team). He had 17 points
with five three-pointers in 72-44 postseason win at Saint Rose. Sophomore forward
MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) averaged 6.7 points off-the-bench
with 37 three-pointers and had 28 points in a win at Southern New Hampshire
and 20 points in a win over Saint Michael's.
Sophomore
guard DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), who also plays football,
adds more athleticism and impressed with more playing time down-the-stretch
last year, junior forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Watertown, CT/Newton, MA North/Taft
adds athleticism up front and is shot blocker/rebounder, senior forward MAREK
KULIG (Brick, NJ/Msgr. Donovan), senior guard WALTER WEEKES (Worcester,
MA/Holy Name) and sophomore forward TOBIN HAASE (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield
Park) have impressed in preseason workouts.
NEW PEOPLE:
6-foot-6, 200-pound guard/forward SHACHAR BIRENDORF (Petch Tiqva,
Israel/Head Haam High), a teammate of former Greyhounds' standout Shahar
Golan '05 on the Ramt Hepal team in Israel, is a physical No. 3 or 4 who
can play both inside and out and contribute in all areas of the game. As a senior
in high school averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds as his team advanced to the state
tournament. Combo guard KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) is a
take-charge lefty, who will bring depth to the perimeter game. He scored 1,714
points in high school and had four straight 30-point games in the Hall of Fame
Spring Classic including 42 against Albany City. Forward (6-foot-6, 190-pound)
JEFF STEWART (Herndon, VA/Flint Hill School) is explosive and equally
adept inside and out. He averaged 14 points, 11 rebounds as a senior and played
in the Jabbar Kennder League all-star game. Samford University transfer (6 foot-7,
205-pounds) SAVOY FRAINE (Granada Hills, CA/Granada Hills) is a high
energy player, standout defender and rebounder. He averaged 18.6 points, 12
rebounds, 6 blocks as a senior at Granada Hills and earned second-team all-Los
Angeles and ranked third in the California in blocks as senior. Finally, 6-foot-6,
230 pount forward TIM BEINERT (Bellrose Village, NY/Holy Cross) is a
cerebral post/power forward who can score inside and is an accomplished three-point
shooter. He averaged 11 points, 10 rebounds as his team won the city and CHSAA
state titles.
THIS YEAR:
DeBari will build the team in the same mold of the many successful Greyhound
teams of the past. Expect the team to lead the conference in diving on-the-floor
and expect them to play physical and aggressive defense.
He is asking
Bluford to upgrade his offensive production, while Twomey needs to do what he
does best, create an atmosphere of hard-work. Key man is Shea, who has shown
signs of being the top perimeter player on the squad, and at other times the
team's best passer. There is little doubt of his versatility and his defensive
prowess.
Offense predicated
off switching defenses is always the order of the day with the more-than-occasional
three thrown in. The Hounds are now as athletic as any team in the conference
and have added considerable depth which will make them a tough assignment on
any given night. Expect this team to be in the conference chase and eventually
go to the NCAA regional tournament at season's end.

Optimistic About Return to N.C.A.A. Post-Season!
LAST YEAR: the reviews were basically raves for the Greyhounds as they enjoyed
their fourth 20-win season en route to the N.C.A.A. regional tournament for
the third time in the KERRY PHAYRE regime. The team started fast winning
two of three at the Disney Classic, then sweeping the Marriott Courtyard Classic
at home, the San Diego Surf 'N Slam and, finally, parading into the national
poll with a nifty team-record nine-game win streak into mid-January.
The major
catalyst in the equation was senior forward/captain and Northeast 10 Conference
all-star Charde Floyd (Worcester, MA/Doherty) (9.1 ppg, 9.6 reb), who
became merely the fourth player in Greyhound women's history with 1,000 points
and 1,000 rebounds. Only a late-season injury put a serious crimp in the team's
chances to reach the Elite Eight.
Also included
in the process were guard/captain and honorable mention all American/Northeast-10
Conference all-star BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee), who led
the team averaging 15.0 points with 49 three-pointers and joining the century
club in free throws (106-for-130) . . . point TRISH GARDNER (North Dartmouth,
MA/Dartmouth), easily the most underrated player in the Northeast-10 Conference,
was the team leader on-the-floor with 172 assists (fifth best in Hounds' history)
and 949 minutes . . . forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline)
earned all-Northeast-10 Conference freshman team honors, averaging 9,2 points
and making 30 three-pointers and guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center,
CT/Woodstock Academy) emerged as a major factor in San Diego averaging 6.3 points
off-the-bench.
THE NON-RETURNERS:
Phayre will first deal with the loss of the aforementioned Charde Floyd
. . . Floyd scored 1,212 points and added 1,056 rebounds, 246 steals and .568
floor accuracy in a brilliant future Hall of Famer career . . . 6-foot-3 reserve
forward/center Megan Urban (Portland, ME/Deering) (7.7 ppg, 4.4
reb) ended her career with 812 career points, 460 rebounds and .516 floor accuracy
. . . and reserve guard/captain Britt Bishop (Mendon, MA/Nimuc) one of
the top defensive players on the squad and reserve forward Sara Czarnecki
(Cumberland, RI/Cumberland), who averaged 3.7 points and 4.3 points with
solid minutes down-the-stretch, was the team's leading rebounder six times off-the-bench.
RETURNING
NUCLEUS: Phayre will mold the 2008-09 Greyhounds around their irrepressible
senior backcourt tandem of Plasski and Gardner. The duo played more minutes
than anyone else on the team for a reason.
Try these
stats for openers: Plasski led the team 13 times in scoring and the team finished
11-2 in those games . . . Gardner led the team 23 times in assists and the team
finished 19-4 and when they both led the team in their respective categories
the team was unbeaten (11-0).
Plasski, the
Andrew Laska Award winner as the female athlete-of-the-year at the College,
ended with 28 double-figure scoring games (out of 32!) with seven 20 point games.
Top performance was a 25-point gem with 10 steals for her first career double-double
against New Haven in the Surf N Slam; 25 points with four three pointers against
NCAA contender Molloy in the Marriott Classic and 24 points in a 30-point blow
out of now Division I Bryant. She also joined the 1,000-point club and currently
resides at 1,058 along with being the career free throw leader at .810 (248-for-306)
and among the career leaders with 114 treys.
Gardner is
the Hounds' on-court general and the only player to start all 32 games last
year. Her top game was 13 points, making six-of-eight from the floor, in a buzzer-beating
win at Southern New Hampshire (it was her trey that won it). She finished second
in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.95).
Junior forward
KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford), a conference all freshman performer
the previous season, averaged 10.4 points and 5.0 rebounds. She poured in a
career-best 27 points (10-for-17 from the floor) in a win over Saint Anselm
and two games later added 22 points with a trio of three-pointers in an 18 point
win over NCAA powerhouse Bentley College. She also had 23 points in another
win over an NCAA regional team Molloy and finished with 19 double-figure games.
With 604 points, she is on her way to the magical 1,000-point mark.
Mobile sophomore
swing MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) adds considerable
perimeter scoring punch and chipped in with 15 double-figure games. Her top
efforts included a 20-point gem at UMass Lowell, an 18-point, 12-rebound effort
versus Merrimack for her first double-double and 18 points vs. Lander, SC in
the Disney Classic. Junior guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock),
the Hounds' resident perpetual motion machine, burst on-the scene with 39 points
in back-to-back efforts in the San Diego Surf N Slam. She had a career-high
23 points in a romp over New Haven and had 16 the next night in a solid win
over Slippery Rock.
Guards AMANDA
SHEEHY (Jr., Linden, NJ/Rosell Catholic) (2.3 ppg), MAEGAN COOK (Jr.,
Braintree, MA/Braintree) (2.1 ppg), JACKIE BRANCA (J.r, Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson)
(0.8 ppg) and point THERESA AMELIO (So., Bronx, NY/Preston) add depth
to the backcourt. Athletic forward PAM MOBLEY (So., Worcester, MA/Doherty),
brings a dominant defensive personality and rebounder to the equation.
NEW PEOPLE:
guard BRITTANY COHEN (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville DeWitt) was a three-time
all-league selection and averaged 17 points and five assists, forward NICOLE
LEPREVOST (Lee, MA/Lee) led her team to the Western Mass. Division III title
three times and forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) scored
1,632 points with over 800 rebounds in high school and averaged 25 points and
11 rebounds as a senior.
THIS YEAR:
Phayre will build the 2008-09 Greyhounds in the same mold of her many successful
teams of the past and therefore expect the Hounds to lead the league in physical
and aggressive defense.
This team however will be dominated by guard play as Plasski and Gardner are
as good a tandem as there is in the Northeast-10 Conference. Parker, Griffiths
and Lupien provide additional solid scoring punch, while the newcomers should
all provide solid depth.
One exciting
sidelight will be Coach Phayre's approach of the magical 200-win mark here at
the College (she's just three away).
When it's
over expect the Greyhounds to be in the conference chase all the way and go
deep in the playoffs. And, another shot at an NCAA berth is well within grasp.
