Matt Stopp '07 Wins ECAC Robbins Scholar Award
Herbert Woodard leads football in record-setting rout;
Rob Younker leads golf team in Dowling Inv'l. win!

CENTERVILLE, Mass. --- Former Assumption College men's tennis standout and captain MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona) has been named the 2007 male Division II Robbins Scholar-Athlete. He is the second Greyhound to have earned the award as James Newman '05, who excelled at both tennis and golf, is the only two-time male winner in 2004 and 2005.

Sponsored by Robbins Sports Surfaces, the Cincinnati-based sports surfaces company, the awards honor the outstanding academic and athletics achievements of student-athletes representing ECAC schools in Divisions I, II and III.

One male and one female athlete from each division have been selected by their institutions. Three committees comprised of athletics administrators select two award winners in each division to be honored during the ECAC Convention at the Honors Dinner presented by Jostens on Sunday, September 30th. Votes are based on extraordinary achievements in academics, athletics and community service.

Standout basketball player Ashley Wallace of Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University earned the female award.

Stopp previously was named the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year as selected by the conference Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR) Council. He was also selected as a member of the CoSIDA/ESPN third-team academic all-America team and earned the 13th NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship in Greyhounds history.

"Matt was one of the premier student-athletes in our history," said Ted Paulauskas, Director of Athletics. "A superb student, he was graduated (May 12, 2007) among the leaders in his class, while as a standout tennis player he served as a two-year captain and won over 95 percent of his matches on one of the most dominant teams in the conference. He is also a true gentleman and prototype to what we hope all Assumption College student-athletes will aspire."

Stopp has been a major cog as the men's tennis team has dominated the Northeast-10 Conference increasing its record conference win streak to an amazing 117 consecutive matches. The team posted an amazing 69-8 overall record including an undefeated 43-0 in conference regular-season and 12-0 in conference post-season. And, the team won 52 of its 56 regular-season matches in his career. The team won improved its team record to nine consecutive regular-season and post-season conference championships.

He posted a 61-3 career singles record (fourth best in Hound annals) with the best won-loss percentage (.953) in team history. His doubles record is 66-5 (fifth best in Hound annals) with the second-best won-loss percentage (.930). The Greyhounds competed in their eighth straight N.C.A.A. Division II tournament in early May.

He earned first-team all-conference honors in both singles and doubles in each of his four years. In addition he has earned Northeast-10 Conference all academic team honors in each of the three years of the awards existence along with Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) all academic mention. He was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN academic all-region team in both 2005-06 and 2006-07 and is prime candidate for an N.C.A.A. postgraduate scholarship.

He was also among the top students at the College earning a 3.90 cumulative grade point average and received his bachelor's in mathematics. He earned a position on the College's Dean's List in eight straight semesters and also an athletics department Director's Citation in all eight previous marking periods as well. He was the lone student-athlete to post a 4.00 grade point average in both the fall and spring semesters this past year and was honored at the College's Academic Honors Convocation with the highest GPA in his major.

Off the court he is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a Resident Assistant Perspective Leaders and is a part of the Natural High Program Organizer.

He is the son of Ron and Anita Stopp of Altoona, PA and a graduate of Altoona High School. He has indicated interest in the ATP satellite pro tennis tour before settling on a choice of graduate school.

Woodard leads Greyhound football parade, 71-21

Freshman running back HERBERT WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) rushed 20 times for 277 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns as Assumption College defeated Saint Anselm College, 71-21, in a Northeast-10 Conference record-setting football game SATURDAY in Manchester, NH.

Woodard led the Greyhounds, now 1-2, 1-1, to an amazing 43-7 first-period lead scoring the game's first touchdown off left-tackle from 70 yards out on the first play of the game just 10 seconds in to the period. Senior JON EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy) kicked the first of seven conversions for a quick 7-0 lead. Eisele tied the Hounds' mark making seven-of-seven conversions also held by Tim Longden '03 vs. Mass. Lowell (11/4/00).

He is the third player in Greyhounds' history to score five touchdowns (and 30 points) in a single game (the first to do it one half) following Fran DeFalco '95 at UMass Lowell (11/6/93) (all rushing) and Kevin Clive vs. Sacred Heart (9/4/99). His 277 yards of all-purpose offense is the ninth-best total in Hounds' history.

The team set marks for most points in a game (71), half (57) and quarter (43), highest winning margin (50), most touchdowns (9) and most one-point conversions (8) among others. The Greyhounds so dominated the game they scored on 10 of their 14 possessions in the first half---all six in the first quarter. They rushed 14 times for 211 yards (208 by Woodard) in the first period alone.

After scoring on the game's first play it took just two plays to get the ball back as freshman safety KEITH BATES (Holden, MA/Wachusett) made his first career interception and returned it to the Hawks' 30. Woodard scored from there three plays later and Eisele kicked the conversion for a 14-0 lead with 12:21 left in the period.

The next series would end as Greyhounds' junior cornerback DAN HICKEY (Auburn, MA/Auburn) tackled the Hawks' punter Andrew Marques for a 23-yard loss at the Hawks' 18 after a poor snap. A loss of 11 yards on a quarterback keeper by senior TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) and ensuing 26-yard pass to junior wide receiver JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) set the Hounds up at the two. Woodard scored from there and senior holder MATT KLASKIN (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian) made the best of bad center snap on the conversion scooting to the corner of the endzone for a two-pointer and a 22-0 advantage.

The Hounds would score again driving 70 yards in five plays as freshman LANCE MITCHELL (Boynton Beach, FL/Pope John Paul) capped the march with a five-yard off-right tackle run. Eisele converted for a 29-0 advantage. A 38-yard scamper around left end and a 31-pass to senior wide receiver JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)---extending his consecutive game streak with at least one reception to 16---highlighted the drive.

A fumble recovery by freshman defensive tackle MATT CHALMERS (Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy) at the Hounds' 48 set up the next score. Woodard rushed for 12 and 50 yards (after a 10-yard holding call) and Eisele kicked the conversion for a 36-0 lead.

Saint Anselm would then mount its first drive of the game going 59 yards in just six plays. Quarterback Nick Barese rushed for 13 and 20 yards to start the march and finally found wide receiver Ryan Drago for the score from six yards out. Freshman placekicker Dyland McSparren made the conversion. And apparent interception by the Hounds' junior safety CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) was nullified by a pass interference call on the previous play.

On the ensuing kickoff sophomore DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) rambled 90 yards---the sixth time the Hounds have had a return of 90 yards or more---for a touchdown. It was the first kickoff returned for a score since Kevin L'Ecuyer '07 returned one 86 yards, also against Saint Anselm, September 20, 2003. Eisele kicked the conversion to make it 43-7.

The Hounds would continue the assault in the second period tacking on two more scores for a record-breaking 57-7 halftime advantage.

A short punt set the Hounds up at the Saint Anselm 46. Woodard would rush five times for 19 yards and Humphrey would find Canney for 18 yards and finally freshman MARCUS NICHOLS (Salem, NJ/Salem) on a seven-yard flair for his first collegiate score with 4:01 left. Eisele kicked the conversion.

A fumble recovery by junior linebacker MITCHELL WELCH (Southington, CT/Southington) set up the final score of the half---a 39-yard scamper by Woodard.

Mitchell scored from 11 yards out in the third period and freshman running back BRYAN DUKE (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc) ran five yards off left-tackle for the final score in the fourth period. Sophomore MIKE MC CORMACK (Glastonbury, CT/East Catholic) kicked both conversions.

A 21-yard quarterback keeper by Barese in the third period and a one-yard plunge, also by Barese, in the fourth period accounted for the final Hawk points.

GREYHOUND NOTES: the Greyhounds amassed 498 total yards including 380 rushing . . . they also held a huge 33:58 to 26:02 in time of possession . . . they converted eight-of-13 third downs . . . freshman quarterback JOSH RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central) was four-for-foru for 27 yards in his first collegiate action . . . freshman wide receiver MARK GATELY (Waltham, MA/Waltham) had three receptions for 19 yards (his first as a collegian) . . . senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) had 6-0--6 tackles with a quarterback sack, three tackles-for-loss and three hurries . . . senior cornerback MIKE O'NEIL (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) ended with 5-1--6 tackles . . .

LAST YEAR'S GAME: Bryant 45, Assumption 21
September 23, 2006

SMITHFIELD, RI --- Quarterback Charlie Granatell threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns and scored another to lead Bryant University past Assumption College, 45-21, in a Northeast-10 Conference game.

Tight end Alex Chaparro was on the receiving end of three touchdown passes, while the conference's leading rusher, Lorenzo Perry, rushed 24 times for 124 yards and scored a touchdown.

For the Greyhounds, quarterback Marshall Tharpe (Irvine, CA/Santa Magarita) completed 14-of-28 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns---two to junior wide out JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), who ended with five receptions for 81 yards.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first driving an amazing 99 yards in 11 plays in the first period. Hounds junior punter JUSTIN ANTONE (Dracut, MA/Bishop Guertin) rolled a career-high 66-yard punt inside the one.

Granatell found wide receiver Sean Bergin (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free) on a third-and-six play extricating his team from the shadow of the goal posts to the 36. Other highlights in the march included a 25-yard run by Perry to the Hounds 28 and a Granatell to wide receiver Ryan Buckley 25-yard completion to the 13. Three Perry rushes---the last for 10 yards---capped the drive. Placekicker Bobby Heilmann kicked the conversion.

The ensuing kickoff was downed at the Hounds 47 by sophomore DAN HICKEY (Auburn, MA/Auburn). Tharpe fired a 42-yard touchdown pass to a wide open junior tight end JAKE LONGENECKER (Fernandina, FL/Manchester, NH West) on the third play on a post pattern. Senior placekicker MIKE TOBIN (Woburn, MA/Woburn) kicked the tying conversion.

Cornerback Chris Wohlheter intercepted Tharpe to start the go-ahead drive. Perry rushed five times for 44 yards---including a dazzling 27 yarder to the three. On the third-down play from the 16, Granatell overthrew wide receiver Chris Arnold in the end zone with Hounds senior defensive end JOSH KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) applying the pressure. Heilmann kicked a 33-yard field goal to cap the drive for a 10-7 advantage.

The Bulldogs would extend the lead to 17-7 at the half as Granatell found Chapparo on a 12-yard scoring pass with 3:53 left in the second period. Heilmann kicked the conversion.

The Hounds struck quickly converting the first series of the second half. Tharpe found Beers on a 38-yard sideline pattern for the touchdown and Tobin kicked the conversion to cut the gap to three (17-14). Granatell wasted little time answering with a 47-yard touchdown pass to his favorite target, wide out Justin Kix (4 receptions for 101 yards), to make it 24-14.

And, the Greyhounds came right back again as Tharpe found Beers in the back of the endzone for six yards and a score. Tobin's conversion made it a three point game (24-21) after three periods.
