Jon EISELE record-setting 49-yard field goal lifts
grid Hounds past Division I-AA LaSalle, 10-7;
Basketball, Hockey, Swimming Open this weekend!
PHILADELPHIA, PA --- Senior placekicker JON EISELE (Lower Gwynedd,
PA/Vermont Academy) kicked a school-record 49-yard field goal with 2:04 remaining
to lift Assumption College past Division I-AA LaSalle University, 10-7, in non-conference
football action Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.
Eisele's field goal is the only the second of over 40 yards in Greyhounds'
football history. Kevin Clark kicked a 45-yarder against Fitchburg State
(10-3-82) during the club years, while Tim Longden's 37-yarder against
Stonehill (10-14 2000) was the previous varsity standard.
Other standouts for the Greyhounds included sophomore wide receiver DAVID
CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett), who caught seven passes for 120 yards
and junior quarterback TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) who
completed 17-of-34 passes for 268 yards.
Canney tied the Greyhounds' single-season record of 51 receptions set last
year by senior wide out JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and became the
first sophomore to reach 1,000 yards in receiving yardage. He now has 83 career
receptions for 1,033 yards---the seventh Greyhound to reach that plateau. For
the season he has 715 receiving yards---only the third Greyhound with over 700
yards.
The Greyhounds host
L.I.U.-C.W. Post FRIDAY night . . . kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game
will be webcast by the Assumption College Webcast Network. Fans can access the
broadcast, and also LIVESTATS, by going to the web site at www.assumptiongreyhounds.com
In addition, freshman running
back HERB WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) (26 carries, 74 yards, 1 TD), sophomore
linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) eight (5-3--8)
tackles played well in support roles. The Greyhounds moved to a 7-0 lead in
the second period as Woodard capped a two-play drive with a one-yard touchdown
plunge. Eisele kicked the conversion.
The Greyhounds drove 32
yards in two plays for their only touchdown of the game. Freshman tackle MIKE
FOLEY (Holden, MA/Saint John's)---Mike's father, Brian '73, was a baseball
standout with the Greyhounds---forced and recovered a fumble by running
back Deric Dudinski to start the march.
On the first play Humphrey
found freshman tight end ERIC SCHINDLER (Kenilworth, NJ/Brearley) open
down-the-middle for 31 yards to set up the Woodard score. Explorer linebacker
Wayne Donahue made a score-saving tackle on the Schindler reception.
The Greyhounds would fumble away another scoring opportunity as corner John
Costello recovered for the Explorers in the endzone and a interception by
safety Jake Cornely stopped the ensuing series.
The Greyhounds would stop
LaSalle in the third quarter as junior safety CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft,
NJ/Middletown South) made his fourth interception of the season (all in the
last four games). Martino is now the varsity career leader with 10.
On the next series, freshman
linebacker JEFF LONGLEY (Browns Mill, NJ/Holy Cross) forced and
recovered a fumble on a punt to set up the next scoring opportunity. Humphrey
connected with Canney for 32 yards and Woodard added an 11-yard scamper around
right end to highlight the march. Eisele's attempted 27 yard field goal was
blocked and recovered by LaSalle linebacker Casey Walsh.
The Explorers tied the
game driving 58 yards in seven plays late in the fourth period. Running back
Dave Macknet scored from a yard out and placekicker Anthony Perlozzi
kicked the game-tying conversion with 6:14 remaining.
Quarterback Joe Procopio,
who rushed for a game-high 95 yards on 11 carries, completed back-to-back passes
to wide receiver Shane Kendrick for seven and then 48 yards (on a third-and-three
play) for his only two receptions of the game. Hounds' corner MIKE MOONAN
(West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) made a touchdown-saving tackle at the Greyhounds'
four. Dudinski ran for a yard before senior end JARED KELLY (Canton,
MA/Xaverian) tackled Procopio for a five-yard loss. An offside penalty against
the Greyhounds however reestablished LaSalle at the one setting up the score.
The Greyhounds would then
drive for the game-winner on the ensuing series.
After Perlozzi kicked off into the endzone for a touchback the Hounds moved
downfield. First Woodard for seven yards, then Humphrey for five yards on a
keeper for a first down on a third-and-three play. Humphrey then found Beers
over-the-middle for 43 yards to the LaSalle 25.
Woodard ran twice for two
yards to the 21 and then Humphrey connected with Beers on a 21-yard slant for
an apparent touchdown. Pass interference against Beers negated the score and
the same duo combined for just four yards on the next play setting the stage
for Eisele's heroics with 2:04 left.
Moonan intercepted Procopio
to finalize the Explorers last drive with 14 seconds left.
GREYHOUNDS NOTES:
the Greyhounds dominated the team statistics outgaining the Explorers 364-210
in total offense and 268-71 in passing yards . . . freshman running back HERB

wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) has 51 receptions
for 715 yards . . . senior wide out JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)
has 39 receptions for 506 yards. Beers, who set the Hounds' career mark for
receptions last week against Merrimack, now has 147 for 1,797 yards . . . Beers
also joins a select group of wide outs who have over 500 yards of receiving
yards in a single season more than once: Eric Mauer (3 times, 1998, 99,
00), Don Kinney (2 times, 1986, 87), Jason Calla (2 times, 1998,
99) and Jake Beers (2006, 07) . . . he needs ONE reception to become
the first Greyhound with 40 or more receptions in three seasons . . . his 90
receptions the last two years broke Billy DeMalia's mark of 88 (2000-01).

LAST YEAR'S GAME: L.I.U.-C.W.
POST 28, ASSUMPTION 7
BROOKVILLE, NY --- Running back Anthony Lazarus scored two second half
touchdowns and rushed for 77 yards to lead 24th-ranked C.W. Post past stubborn
Assumption, 28-7, in the Northeast-10 opener for both teams at rain soaked Hickox
Field.
The Greyhounds dominated
the first-half statistics playing to a 7-7 stalemate with the defending conference
champions. Assumption held a 21:00-9:00 minute advantage in possession time
and a 9-5 edge in first downs.
C.W. Post got on the board
16 seconds into the second period driving 58 yards in just four plays capped
by a 49-yard scoring pass from quarterback Nick Georgetti to wide out
Jamie Kilcullen. Andrew Kroell (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) kicked the
conversion point.
The Greyhounds tied the
game with 40 seconds left in the half as senior quarterback Joe Correia
(Melrose, MA) found junior wide out JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)
in the back of the end zone for the score. Senior Mike Tobin (Woburn,
MA) kicked the conversion.
The nine-play, 56-yard
drive started when senior linebacker Mark Cinar (Watertown, MA) intercepted
at the Hounds' 41. Correia found freshman DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett)
for 11 yards---the first collegiate reception for the fourth-leading Massachusetts
high school scorer (271 points)--- and then connected with junior tight end
JAKE LONGENECKER (Fernandina, FL/Manchester, NH West) twice for seven
and nine yards. Senior running back Kevin L'Ecuyer (Leominster, MA) scampered
20 yards to set up the score. L'Ecuyer led the Hounds with 69 yards on 25 carries.
Cornerback Javien Eason
made the first of his two interceptions with 1:09 left in the third period.
His ensuing 37-yard return set up the Pioneers at the Hounds 15. Georgetti ran
around right end to the seven---a touchdown saving tackle made by Cinar---and
Lazarus scampered for five more to the two. Lazarus' two-yard off-tackle slant
put the Pioneers in front to stay. Kroell's conversion made it 14-7.
C.W. Post would score two
touchdowns in the final 7:57, the first capping a short drive after a fourth-and-one
attempt by the Greyhounds fell short and the second coming after a second Eason
interception.
Correia's quarterback sneak
on a fourth-and-inches play at the Assumption 32 fell short as the Pioneers'
defensive end Maurice Baker and linebacker Matt Albanese combined
to make the game-clinching stop.
Georgetti completed three
straight passes to wide receiver Chris Bone for eight yards, to tight
end Mike Moran for 11 more and finally to wide out Jo-el Kimaiyo
for eight yards to the Assumption five. Lazarus capped the short drive with
a two-yard slant off left tackle and Kroell kicked the conversion.
Eason then picked off his
second pass of the game on the Hounds' first play of the next series. The Pioneers
drove 45 yards in just five plays---a major penalty and a 14-yard pass to Bone
highlighted the march capped by a Georgetti seven-yard keeper. Kroell's conversion
made the final 28-7.

Northeast-10 Conference playoffs: March 1, 3, 6, 8 (12 teams)
Greyhounds Open Practice
With Extended Optimism
LAST YEAR: the
reviews for the second year in the second Serge DeBari regime were mixed. The
team had five players average 8.9 points or more in very balanced offense .
. . they outrebounded their opponents . . . and, they beat a nationally ranked
Saint Rose team down-the-stretch as DeBari joined the ranks of 300-game winners.
But, instead of playing off-the-momentum of that choice victory they lost their
final four games including a first-round conference playoff with Saint Michael's
. . . they did shoot just .416 from the floor and and .323 from three-point
territory and they averaged just 69.7 points per game . . . the team won at
UMass Lowell (68-62) for the second straight year as PAT SHEA
(Salem, MA/Salem) dropped in 21, mostly from long range . . . and they claimed
a 76-61 win at American International rallying from a seven-point halftime deficit
as COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley) blistered for a career-high
30 points (13 for-19 from the floor).
THE NON-RETURNERS:
DeBari will miss the services of forward/two-year captain Justin Hotchkiss
(Maynard, MA/Maynard/Cushing) who averaged just 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds
in an injury-plagued season . . . sharpshooting guard Mike Taft
(Avon, CT/Avon) averaged 4.7 points off-the-bench but did make 24 three pointers
(third on the club) including a career-best 17 in a 97-88 win over Merrimack.
RETURNING NUCLEUS:
DeBari will mold the 2006-07 Greyhounds around that balanced offense of a year
ago. Ssenior forward/two-year captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable),
the Hounds resident work-a holic and 1,700 point producer in high school, averaged
a team-leading 13.4 points, 5.5 rebounds. shot a team-leading .483 from the
floor. Twomey was spectacular (25 points) in a tough loss at nationally ranked
Bentley and registered 20 double figure games . . . he had 26 points (tied career
high) with 12-for-12 at the line at Stonehill . . . led the team in free throw
accuracy (.807).
Senior forward COREY
DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) averaged 11.5 points and shot
.460 from the field and led the team with 35 blocks . . . 16 double-figure games
including seven double-doubles . . . had 24 in a win at Merrimack and 22 in
a win at Saint Anselm.
Senior guard LEROY BYRON
(Worcester, MA/North) was the Hounds top perimeter player and averaged 8.9 points
while playing over 800 minutes for the second straight year. Byron had 12 double-figure
games . . . led the team with 40 three-pointers . . . career-high 20 points
at Mercyhurst (with six three-pointers) and had 17 points in a win over Adelphi
(with 10-for-10 free throws).
Junior guard/forward PATRICK
SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) who at times was a deft passing machine and at other
times showed signs of being a premier perimeter shooter . . . had career-best
24 points (five three-pointers) in upset of nationally ranked Saint Rose . .
. 21 points (with six three-pointers) in win at UMass Lowell . . . first career
double-double 19 points, 10 rebounds in home win over Le Moyne.
Sophomore guard COURTLAND
BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti) averaged 9.3 points
(fourth on team) in 871 minutes (second only to Twomey) and team-leading 47
steals . . . 13 double-figure games . . . 18 points at Bryant and at Saint Michael's
. . . 17 points vs. S. New Hampshire and vs. Saint Rose . . . senior forward
MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin), who scored over 1,100 points in high
school, averaged 4.7 points with four double-figure games . . . had 19 points
in win at Southern Connecticut and 18 in win at Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.
THE SUPPORTING CAST:
mention keys to the team and the name of junior point guard MITCH BAJEMA
(Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) comes up often . . . Bajema led his
high school team to a pair of state championships and will be counted on to
drive the Greyhound's bus and plainly get the ball to the right place . . .
hyper senior forward ALEX POPP (pronounced Pope) (Winchester, MA/Winchester)
specializes in making things happen . . . sophomore forward MAREK KULIG
(Brick, NJ/Msgr. Donovan) is back after an injury-plagued season . . . sophomore
forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Watertown, CT/Newton, MA North/Taft added considerable
athleticism to the roster and showed things in a nine point, 10 rebounds effort
at Puerto Rico Rio Piedras and three double-figure rebound games.
NEW PEOPLE: freshman
forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) moved across town and
will be counted on to move into the regular rotation. Baldarelli was the Massachusetts
Player of the Year leading his team to the state title game and averaged 22.3
points and 11.2 rebounds . . . sophomore transfer (Hampton Institute) guard
WALTER WEEKES (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and freshman walkon TOBIN
HAASE (Ridgefield, Nj/Ridgefield Park) have impressed in preseason workouts.
Another freshman, DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), who is also
playing football, will add more athleticism.
THIS YEAR: DeBari
will build his new-look 2007-08 Greyhounds in the same mold of the many successful
Greyhound teams of the past. Expect the Greyhounds to lead the league in diving
on-the-floor and expect the team to play physical and aggressive defense.
He is asking Bluford to
move to the point this year and also needs substantial offense from his athletic
guard. Twomey needs to at least repeat his statistics of a year ago, Diethorn
needs to get his floor accuracy in the mid-.500s and Byron needs to get back
to his sophomore year consistency. Key man might just be Shea, who has shown
signs of being the top perimeter player on the squad and at other times the
team's best passer.
Offense predicated off
switching defenses is always the order of the day with the more-than-occasional
three thrown in. The Hounds are now as athletic as anyone in the conference
which will make them a tough assignment on any given night.
A sidelight this year will
the Hounds race to the magical 1,000-victory mark (they have 990 entering the
year!) . . . no New England Division II team has ever reached that plateau!

Northeast-10 Conference playoffs: March 2, 4, 7, 9 (12 teams)
Hounds Optimistic
About Return to NCAA Post-Season!
LAST YEAR: the reviews
for last year were mixed to say the least. The team reached the Northeast-10
Conference playoffs but their 13-16 overall record was a "disappoinment" according
to Coach KERRY PHAYRE. The needs were easily seen on the statistics
sheet . . . a more prominent guard situation in which the perimeter game improves
significantly and someone steps up to run the offense. The team shot just .407
from the floor despite having one of the dominant inside games in the conference
and just .304 from three-point territory. And, the Greyhounds have not had a
100-assist performer since 2001-02.
Overall the team finished
with six wins in its last 10 starts including an 85-70 gem against nationally
ranked Saint Rose and a come-from-behind road win at Franklin Pierce in the
conference playoffs.
THE NON-RETURNERS:
Phayre will first deal with the loss of starting guard Jess Paulson (North
Providence, RI/LaSalle Academy), who played in more games than anyone in Hounds
history. Paulson averaged 6.0 points, led the team with 92 assists and was third
with 19 thee-pointers. Reserve guard Ashley Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland)
averaged 2.3 points.
RETURNING NUCLEUS:
Phayre will mold the 2007-08 Greyhounds around the marvelous talents of one
of the Northeast-10 Conference's premier players in junior forward/captain CHARDE
FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy). Floyd was second on the team at
12.2 points-per-game and was the conference leader in rebounds (9.8) for the
second straight year and floor accuracy (.583), while earning second-team all-star
honors. She also finished with 19 double figure scoring games (52 career) and
eight double-doubles (39 in her career). Her top effort was 25 points, 11 rebounds
in the win over nationally ranked Saint Rose.
Floyd will be the "marked
player" once again for the Greyhounds as she moves into hallowed territory in
the team record book. She needs 25 points for 1,000 and 193 rebounds for 1,000---she
will become merely the fourth Greyhound to reach both figures!
The Greyhounds resident
director of determination junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall
River, MA/Durfee) averaged a team-leading 12.9 points and led the team in three-pointers
(55), free throw accuracy (.835), minutes played (955) and was second in steals
(62) and assists (67) and, oddly enough, third in rebounding (3.3). She authored
six 20-point games including a career-best 29 in a road win at Southern New
Hampshire; 23 in a road win at Saint Michael's (including 17 in a blistering
second half display) and 22 at Bryant.
Senior guard/captain BRITT
BISHOP (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc) is the Greyhounds top defensive performer and
averaged 4.8 points. Her top efforts included a career-best 13 points in a closer
game at national champion Southern Connecticut and 12 in the first-round playoff
win at Franklin Pierce.
Freshman forward KAYLA
PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) averaged 10.5 points and 4.1 rebounds en route
her selection on the conference all-freshman team. She poured in 22 points with
13 rebounds in a win at Merrimack and added 14 other double-figure games. She
finished third on the team in floor accuracy (.517) and led the team with 24
blocks.
Senior forward/center MEGAN
URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) is the other half of the Greyhound twin-towers
and averaged 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds with .520 floor accuracy. She scored 19
second-half points in a dominatign performance against Saint Rose with five
other double-figure games.
Junior point TRISH GARDNER
(Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) averaged 1.8 points with 56 assists but will counted
on to provide on court leadership as the odds on-choice to win the point guard
spot. Early reviews from preseason are exciting the coaching staff.
Senior forward SARA
CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) (2.0 ppg), sophomore guard LESLIE
LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock) (2.1 ppg), sophomore guard AMANDA
SHEEHY (Linde, NJ/Rosell Catholic) (1.7 ppg) and sophomore guard MAEGAN
COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) provided depth. Another guard, sophomore
JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman Hanson) missed the season with an knee
problem.
NEW PEOPLE: athletic
forward PAM MOBLEY (Worcester, MA/Doherty), who will bring yet another
polished frontcourt player to the equation and was a dominant rebounder and
shotblocker for her high school team . . . point THERESA AMELIO (Bronx,
NY/Preston) adds quickness and depth to the backcourt and guard MOLLY
GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) is a versatile offensive performer both
from the perimeter and taking the ball to the basket.
THIS YEAR: Phayre
will build her new-look 2007-08 Greyhounds in the same mold of her many successful
teams of the past and therefore expect the Hounds to lead the league in physical
and aggressive defense. Their dominant inside game should once again play a
prominent role as Floyd, Urban, and Parker are as solid a threesome as there
is in the conference.
Plasski is a top-notch
performer at the off-guard and Bishop is the most cerebral, and top defensive,
player on the squad. Phayre needs to increase production from the rest of the
backcourt contributors both in the perimeter and ballhandling departments. Overall
this team can hopefully set its sights high with a return to the N.C.A.A. postseason.
