Greyhounds golf SECOND at NE-10 championships;
Football bows at Bentley, 22-13
Men and women's BASKETBALL previews
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Luis Cotto rushed for 167 yards on 35 carries and Bentley
College totalled 316 total yards en route to a 22-13 win over Assumption College
in a Northeast-10 Conference game FRIDAY.
The Falcons, now 3-1 overall and in the conference, broke a 13-13 tie at the
half with nine unanswered second-half points and turned the game over to its
defense. In the second half the Greyhounds (1-4, 1-3) punted five times and
turned the ball over on downs once and fumbled once in its seven possessions
after scoring two touchdowns on just six plays to end the first half.
The Greyhounds host
Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State University FRIDAY .
. . kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Multi-Sports Stadium. The game will
be webcast by the Greyhounds with CHRIS FAMA and STEVE DIVITTO '07 bringing
you all the action. LIVESTATS will also be available. Fans can access both by
going to the Greyhounds web site at www.assumptiongreyhounds.com.
Statistics told the story . . . Bentley held advantage in time of possession
(36:13 to 23:47) and ran 80 plays to the Hounds 53. The Greyhounds also converted
just two-of-13 third downs (0-for-2 on fourth-down opportunities). Falcons punter/
quarterback John White did yeoman work with his arm (16-for-34 for 175 yards
and two touchdowns) and his foot (five punts including a 54-yarder and four
that left the Hounds inside the 10 to start drives.
The Falcons opened the
scoring in the first period as a cornerback Paul Tetzel interception and eight-yard
return set his team up at the Greyhounds 22. White connected with Jehan Murphy
on the first play for the touchdown and Tyler McNamara kicked the conversion
for a 7-0 lead.
On their next possession
the Falcons drove 52 yards in 12 plays to move in front 10-0. A White to Mike
Griggs 18 yard pass play on a fourth-and-eight play to the Hounds 10 set up
the score. McNamara capped the drive with a 25-yard field goal with 12:34 left
in the half. Greyhound junior linebacker GREG MOORE (Norton, MA/Bishop
Feehan) made successive stops of Cotto and junior defensive tackle TERRY
STANFORD (Newark, NJ/Ridgefield Park) hurried White on the third-down
play.
On the ensuing series,
the shortest in terms of time consumed (just 36 seconds!) for the season , .
. the Greyhounds drove 69 yards in just two plays . . . a 43-yard pass from
junior quarterback TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) to
sophomore wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett)
on the far sideline and then a 26-yarder to senior wide reciever JAKE
BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) in the end zone for the score. The conversion
went wide leaving Bentley in front by seven, 13-6.
\
The Greyhounds defense rose to the occasion on the next series stopping the
Falcons as junior safety CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown
South) forced a White fumble on a blitz on a fourth-and-four play. The Hounds
would then drive 52 yards in just four plays to tie the game.
Sophomore running back LAMMAR CASH (West Haven, CT/Notre Dame)
rambled 17 yards up the middle on the first play and then Humphrey teamed with
Canney on a nifty 34-yard acrobatic reception at the Falcons 11. Humphrey found
Beers in the back of the endzone for the touchdown with 1:04 left two plays
later. Senior placekicker JON EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont
Academy) kicked the game-tying conversion.
The Greyhounds started
the second half with the ball and promptly turned it over on a third-and-long
play as Falcons tackle Scott Miller forced a fumble recovered at the Assumption
27. Two plays later White found Murphy wide open in the far corner of the endzone
for the touchdown. McNamara's conversion was blocked by freshman end MATT
CHALMERS (Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy) leaving it 19-13.
The Falcons made it a two-possesion
game at 22-13 with 8:34 left in the fourth period capping a four-play, 34 yard
drive. A 14-yard punt return by returner Ed Sciaba and five Cotto rushes for
31 yards (including a 22-yarder up the gut) set up the score.
The Greyhounds did drive
to the Bentley 36 on the ensuing drive but were thwarted on a fourth-and-three
play. Humphrey connected with Beers on completions of eight and 14 yards and
freshman running back LANCE MITCHELL (Boynton Beach, FL/Pope John Paul
II)) scampered 14 yards on the march. Humphrey overthrew junior wide out JOEY
FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) on the crucial fourth-down play with 5:20
left.
GREYHOUNDS NOTES:

LAST YEAR'S GAME: S.
Connecticut 26, Assumption 24
October 6, 2006
NEW HAVEN, Conn. --- Sophomore quarterback STEVE ARMSTRONG (Nutley, NJ/Nutley)
threw a touchdown pass---his second of the game---to sophomore wide receiver
CHRIS BERGESKI (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston)---his second of
the game---with 23 seconds left as Southern Connecticut State University rallied
to defeat Assumption College, 26-24, in a wild Northeast-10 Conference game
at Jess Dow Field.
Highlights for the Greyhounds
included freshman running back JAREL CAPERS (Bridgeport, CT/Notre
Dame) first two collegiate touchdowns and 75 yards on 14 carries . . . a career-best
12 catches (third-best in Hounds' history) by junior JAKE BEERS (Duxbury,
MA/Duxbury) who now has 89 for his career (tying Kyle Yermalovich '03 for third-place
on the career list) and became the the sixth Greyhound receiver to reach 1,000
yards for a career (1,040 to date).
Highlights for Southern
Connecticut included a superb performance by Armstrong as he completed 19-of-26
passes for 185 yards . . . sophomore wide out TYRON MARSHALL (Ellenwood,
GA/J.F. Kennedy), who caught six passes for 108 yards . . . and junior running
back BRANDON TOLES (Washington, MD/Friendly), who rushed 26 times for
121 yards.
The Greyhounds who trailed
14-2 entering the fourth period scored three touchdowns to move to a 24-20 lead
with 3:33 left.
After freshman wide out
DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) made a sensational grab for a
five-year TD to put the Greyhounds ahead he made a thundering tackle on the
ensuing kickoff at the 20. However the Owls would drive 80 yards in 12 plays
to retake the lead.
Armstrong connected with
Marshall for 17 yards and then found freshman tight end TOM CERNY (Mahweh,
NJ/Mahweh) for 17 more to highlight the drive. Bergeski caught the game-winner
on a touch pass over-the-top in the back corner of the end zone. The conversion
kick failed leaving the Owls in front by two.
Southern Connecticut led
7-2 at the half as Bergeski caught a 24-yard touchdown strike from sophomore
quarterback CHRIS ROBERTS (New Britain, CT/New Britain) with 11:52 left
in the half. Roberts' conversion made it 7-0.
The first half was frustrating
for the Greyhounds as they did not capitalize on three scoring chances in the
red zone. They drove to the Owls 21 only to have two passes go incomplete and
surrender on downs . . . they drove inside the Owls one, only to turn it over
on downs after sophomore DAN HICKEY (Auburn, MA/Auburn) had blocked a
punt at the 11 . . . and, finally, they blocked a second punt---by freshman
JORDAN BELLIVEAU (Millbury, MA/Millbury)---into the end zone only to
have the ball squirt out of the end zone for a safety.
The Owls would score the
only touchdown in the third period driving 49 yards in eight plays after sophomore
tailback MARLON THORNTON (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) returned the kickoff
36 yards to the Assumption 49. Armstrong
connected with Marshall for 19 yards to the 16 on pass over-the middle to highlight
the drive. He then found senior wide receiver MARCUS GANTHIER
(Bridgeport, CT/Bassick) over-the-middle again for the score from five yards
out. Junior MARTIN GERRETY (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) kicked the conversion
for a 14-2 lead.
The Greyhounds drove 85
yards in 12 plays --- freshman quarterback MARSHALL THARPE (Irvine, CA/Santa
Magarita) completed five passes to Beers on the drive for 22, six, five, five
and 21 yards --- before Capers darted around right end for the score unscathed.
Senior MIKE TOBIN (Woburn, MA/Woburn) kicked the conversion to make it
14-9.
On the ensuing kickoff
senior linebacker MARK CINAR (Watertown, MA/Watertown) forced and then
recovered a fumble at the Southern 29. Capers scampered the final 18 yards for
the score and then Tharpe hit Beers for a two-point conversion and 17-14 Assumption
advantage.
The Owls however came right
back driving 69 yards in 15 plays as sophomore fullback CRAIG TOULOUSE
(Whitefield, ME/Gardiner Area) rambled the final six yard. Gerety's conversion
failed leaving it 20-17 Owls in command.
Then it was the Greyhounds
turn as Tharpe fired a five-yard touchdown strike to Canney---all three Greyhound
touchdowns were scored by freshmen---to cap a 73-yard drive in six plays. Tobin
kicked the conversion for a 24-20 lead.

NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE
MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
Vesper Country Club, Tyngsboro, MA/September 30-October 1, 2007
TEWKSBURY, Mass. --- Junior captain ROB YOUNKER (Waltham, MA/Waltham)
recorded a 76-74--150 to finish fourth overall individually leading the Assumption
College men's golf team to a best-ever second-place team finish in the Northeast-10
Conference championship played Sunday and Monday at the 6,740 yard, par-72 Vesper
Country Club.
Bentley College repeated
as champion with a two-day total of 311-305--616, while the Greyhounds finished
just four strokes back at 309-311--620. First-round leader Bryant University
finished third at 304-319--623. Saint Anselm (310-319--629) and Le Moyne (318-312--629)
rounded out the top five.
Younker, who led the Greyhounds
to their previous best-ever fourth-place finish in the tournament last year
has now finished third and fourth the last two years. He earned first-team
all-conference honors for the second consecutive year. Younker was ably
supported by freshman STEVE WOLAK (North Grosvenordale, CT/Tourtellotte)
(76-79--155), junior captain JAMIE FARREA (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth)
(83-75--158), junior captain TYLER JOHNSON (Holden, MA/Wachusett) (77-83--160)
and sophomore DAVID TURNBLOM (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's) (80-85--165).
Younker has been remarkably
consistent this season with a medal average of 73.9---he has posted rounds of
75, 74, 73, 74, 71, 76, and 74 for his seven rounds. The Greyhounds have won
the Assumption College Shoot Out and the Dowling Invitational and finished 11th
in the ECAC Championship last week.

Greyhounds
Open Practice With Extended Optimism
LAST YEAR: the reviews for the second year in the second Serge DeBari
regime were mixed. The team had five players average 8.9 points or more in very
balanced offense . . . they outrebounded their opponents . . . and, they beat
a nationally ranked Saint Rose team down-the-stretch as DeBari joined the ranks
of 300-game winners. But, instead of playing off-the-momentum of that choice
victory they lost their final four games including a first-round conference
playoff with Saint Michael's . . . they did shoot just .416 from the floor and
and .323 from three-point territory and they averaged just 69.7 points per game
. . . the team won at UMass Lowell (68-62) for the second straight year as PAT
SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) dropped in 21, mostly from long range . . . and
they claimed a 76-61 win at American International rallying from a seven-point
halftime deficit as COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley)
blistered for a career-high 30 points (13 for-19 from the floor).
THE NON-RETURNERS:
DeBari will miss the services of forward/two-year captain Justin Hotchkiss
(Maynard, MA/Maynard/Cushing) who averaged just 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds
in an injury-plagued season . . . sharpshooting guard Mike Taft
(Avon, CT/Avon) averaged 4.7 points off-the-bench but did make 24 three pointers
(third on the club) including a career-best 17 in a 97-88 win over Merrimack.
RETURNING
NUCLEUS: DeBari will mold the 2006-07 Greyhounds around that balanced offense
of a year ago. Ssenior forward/two-year captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton,
MA/Groton-Dunstable), the Hounds resident work-a holic and 1,700 point producer
in high school, averaged a team-leading 13.4 points, 5.5 rebounds. shot a team-leading
.483 from the floor. Twomey was spectacular (25 points) in a tough loss at nationally
ranked Bentley and registered 20 double figure games . . . he had 26 points
(tied career high) with 12-for-12 at the line at Stonehill . . . led the team
in free throw accuracy (.807) . . .
Senior forward
COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) averaged 11.5 points
and shot .460 from the field and led the team with 35 blocks . . . 16 double-figure
games including seven double-doubles . . . had 24 in a win at Merrimack and
22 in a win at Saint Anselm . . .
Senior guard
LEROY BYRON (Worcester, MA/North) was the Hounds top perimeter player
and averaged 8.9 points while playing over 800 minutes for the second straight
year. Byron had 12 double-figure games . . . led the team with 40 three-pointers
. . . career-high 20 points at Mercyhurst (with six three-pointers) and had
17 points in a win over Adelphi (with 10-for-10 free throws) . . .
Junior guard/forward
PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) who at times was a deft passing machine
and at other times showed signs of being a premier perimeter shooter . . . had
career-best 24 points (five three-pointers) in upset of nationally ranked Saint
Rose . . . 21 points (with six three-pointers) in win at UMass Lowell . . .
first career double-double 19 points, 10 rebounds in home win over Le Moyne
. . .
Sophomore
guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti)
averaged 9.3 points (fourth on team) in 871 minutes (second only to Twomey)
and team-leading 47 steals . . . 13 double-figure games . . . 18 points at Bryant
and at Saint Michael's . . . 17 points vs. S. New Hampshire and vs. Saint Rose
. . . senior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin), who scored over
1,100 points in high school, averaged 4.7 points with four double-figure games
. . . had 19 points in win at Southern Connecticut and 18 in win at Puerto Rico-Rio
Piedras . . .
THE SUPPORTING
CAST: mention keys to the team and the name of junior point guard MITCH
BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) comes up often . . . Bajema
led his high school team to a pair of state championships and will be counted
on to drive the Greyhound's bus and plainly get the ball to the right place
. . . hyper senior forward ALEX POPP (pronounced Pope) (Winchester, MA/Winchester)
specializes in making things happen . . . sophomore forward MAREK KULIG
(Brick, NJ/Msgr. Donovan) is back after an injury-plagued season . . . sophomore
forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Watertown, CT/Newton, MA North/Taft added considerable
athleticism to the roster and showed things in a nine point, 10 rebounds effort
at Puerto Rico Rio Piedras and three double-figure rebound games . . .
NEW PEOPLE:
freshman forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) moved
across town and will be counted on to move into the regular rotation. Baldarelli
was the Massachusetts Player of the Year leading his team to the state title
game and averaged 22.3 points and 11.2 rebounds . . . sophomore transfer (Hampton
Institute) guard WALTER WEEKES (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and freshman
walkon TOBIN HAASE (Ridgefield, Nj/Ridgefield Park) have impressed in
preseason workouts. Another freshman, DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy
Name), who is also playing football, will add more athleticism.
THIS YEAR:
DeBari will build his new-look 2007-08 Greyhounds in the same mold of the
many successful Greyhound teams of the past. Expect the Greyhounds to lead the
league in diving on-the-floor and expect the team to play physical and aggressive
defense.
He is asking
Bluford to move to the point this year and also needs substantial offense from
his athletic guard. Twomey needs to at least repeat his statistics of a year
ago, Diethorn needs to get his floor accuracy in the mid-.500s and Byron needs
to get back to his sophomore year consistency. Key man might just be Shea, who
has shown signs of being the top perimeter player on the squad and at other
times the team's best passer.
Offense predicated
off switching defenses is always the order of the day with the more-than-occasional
three thrown in. The Hounds are now as athletic as anyone in the conference
which will make them a tough assignment on any given night.
A sidelight
this year will the Hounds race to the magical 1,000-victory mark (they have
990 entering the year!) . . . no New England Division II team has ever reached
that plateau!

Northeast-10 Conference playoffs: March 2, 4, 7, 9 (12 teams)
Hounds
Optimistic About Return to NCAA Post-Season!
LAST YEAR: the reviews for last year were mixed to say the
least. The team reached the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs but their 13-16
overall record was a "disappoinment" according to Coach KERRY PHAYRE.
The needs were easily seen on the statistics sheet . . . a more prominent guard
situation in which the perimeter game improves significantly and someone steps
up to run the offense. The team shot just .407 from the floor despite having
one of the dominant inside games in the conference and just .304 from three-point
territory. And, the Greyhounds have not had a 100-assist performer since 2001-02.
Overall the team finished
with six wins in its last 10 starts including an 85-70 gem against nationally
ranked Saint Rose and a come-from-behind road win at Franklin Pierce in the
conference playoffs.
THE NON-RETURNERS:
Phayre will first deal with the loss of starting guard Jess Paulson (North
Providence, RI/LaSalle Academy), who played in more games than anyone in Hounds
history. Paulson averaged 6.0 points, led the team with 92 assists and was third
with 19 thee-pointers. Reserve guard Ashley Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland)
averaged 2.3 points.
RETURNING
NUCLEUS: Phayre will mold the 2007-08 Greyhounds around the marvelous talents
of one of the Northeast-10 Conference's premier players in junior forward/captain
CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy). Floyd was second on the
team at 12.2 points-per-game and was the conference leader in rebounds (9.8)
for the second straight year and floor accuracy (.583), while earning second-team
all-star honors. She also finished with 19 double figure scoring games (52 career)
and eight double-doubles (39 in her career). Her top effort was 25 points, 11
rebounds in the win over nationally ranked Saint Rose.
Floyd will
be the "marked player" once again for the Greyhounds as she moves into hallowed
territory in the team record book. She needs 25 points for 1,000 and 193 rebounds
for 1,000---she will become merely the fourth Greyhound to reach both figures!
The Greyhounds
resident director of determination junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI
(Fall River, MA/Durfee) averaged a team-leading 12.9 points and led the team
in three-pointers (55), free throw accuracy (.835), minutes played (955) and
was second in steals (62) and assists (67) and, oddly enough, third in rebounding
(3.3). She authored six 20-point games including a career-best 29 in a road
win at Southern New Hampshire; 23 in a road win at Saint Michael's (including
17 in a blistering second half display) and 22 at Bryant.
Senior guard/captain
BRITT BISHOP (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc) is the Greyhounds top defensive performer
and averaged 4.8 points. Her top efforts included a career-best 13 points in
a closer game at national champion Southern Connecticut and 12 in the first-round
playoff win at Franklin Pierce.
Freshman forward
KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) averaged 10.5 points and 4.1 rebounds
en route her selection on the conference all-freshman team. She poured in 22
points with 13 rebounds in a win at Merrimack and added 14 other double-figure
games. She finished third on the team in floor accuracy (.517) and led the team
with 24 blocks.
Senior forward/center
MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) is the other half of the Greyhound
twin-towers and averaged 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds with .520 floor accuracy.
She scored 19 second-half points in a dominatign performance against Saint Rose
with five other double-figure games.
Junior point
TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) averaged 1.8 points with 56 assists
but will be counted on to provide on-court leadership as the odds on-choice
to win the point guard spot. Early reviews from preseason are exciting the coaching
staff.
Senior forward
SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) (2.0 ppg), sophomore guard
LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock) (2.1 ppg), sophomore guard
AMANDA SHEEHY (Linde, NJ/Rosell Catholic) (1.7 ppg) and sophomore guard
MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) provided depth. Another guard,
sophomore JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman Hanson) missed the season
with an knee problem.
NEW PEOPLE:
athletic forward PAM MOBLEY (Worcester, MA/Doherty), who will bring
yet another polished frontcourt player to the equation and was a dominant rebounder
and shotblocker for her high school team . . . point THERESA AMELIO (Bronx,
NY/Preston) adds quickness and depth to the backcourt and guard MOLLY
GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) is a versatile offensive performer both
from the perimeter and taking the ball to the basket.
THIS YEAR:
Phayre will build her new-look 2007-08 Greyhounds in the same mold of her
many successful teams of the past and therefore expect the Hounds to lead the
league in physical and aggressive defense. Their dominant inside game should
once again play a prominent role as Floyd, Urban, and Parker are as solid a
threesome as there is in the conference.
Plasski is
a top-notch performer at the off-guard and Bishop is the most cerebral, and
top defensive, player on the squad. Phayre needs to increase production from
the rest of the backcourt contributors both in the perimeter and ballhandling
departments.
Overall this
team can hopefully set its sights high with a return to the N.C.A.A. postseason.
