GREYHOUNDS WEEKLY
SPORTS NOTEBOOK
October 24, 2007, Number 9 Golf SIXTH in NEIGA; Rob Younker all-New
England Younker earned all-New England honors for his effort and tied American International College's Garrett Beyor (71-78--149) for fourth-place overall and first among Division II and Northeast-10 competitors. A.I.C. is coached by former Greyhound baseball pitcher/standout Gary Ensor '78. The Greyhounds' 312-310--622 total was second only to Northeast-10 Conference rival Bryant University (313-301--614) among Division II institutions. The Greyhounds also outdistanced all Central Massachusetts opponents: Nichols (307-317--624), Holy Cross (311-320--631) and Worcester State (317-317--634). The sixth-place finish is the second-best performance in Greyhound's golf history as the 1986 team ended fourth in the spring invitational led by now six-time Massachusetts Amateur Golfer-of-the-Year Frank Vana '86, who carded a 76-73--149 at New Seabury, MA C.C. This year's entry however did establish the team medal low by two strokes over the 1986 entry. Younker's 73 in the first round was the Greyhound's top performance since 1989, when Hall of Famer Patrick Dunn '89 carded a 72 in the spring event. Dunn's 71 in the 1987 fall tournament is the Greyhound's standard. Younker's 149 total ties the Greyhound's mark held by Vana (76-73--149) in 1986 spring and Dunn (78-71--149) in the 1987 fall tournament. Also for the Greyhounds junior/captain TYLER JOHNSON (Holden, MA/Wachusett)--who earned all-New England honors in 2006--carded a 76-79--155 (28th place) and junior/captain JAMIE FARREA (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) carded a 80-77--157 (51st place). Two freshmen were playing in their first NEIGA event: STEVE WOLAK (North Grosvenordale, CT/Tourtellotte) (83-78--161) (78th) and RICH BYLUND (Auburn, MA/Auburn) (83-84--167) (128th).
The Greyhounds outgained the visiting Warriors, 431-333, and got standout performances from junior quarterback TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte, CA) (25-for-38, 265 yards) and freshman running back HERB WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) (17 carries, 129 yards). Defensively, sophomore linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) finished with 3-7 -10 tackles, his sixth double-figure tackle game this year, and junior safety CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) had two interceptions and six tackles. And, senior wide receiver JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) became the Hounds career leader in receptions catching six for 91 yards --- he now has 143 for his career surpassing Eric Mauer (1997-2000) who caught 140 in his career. The Greyhounds travel to Philadelphia SATURDAY for a game with Division I-AA LaSalle University . . . kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game will be webcast by LaSalle Web TV. Fans can access the broadcast, and also LIVESTATS, by going to the Explorers web site at http://goexplorers.cstv.com. The Warriors led 17-14 after one period as the teams combined for 134 yards rushing and 149 yards passing --- 283 yards of total offense! Merrimack advanced the opening drive 47 yards in 11 plays --- with running back Richard Johnson carrying seven times for 27 yards. Placekicker Sean Garvey kicked a 29-yard field goal to cap the drive as the Greyhounds defense stiffened. Freshman safety KEITH BATES (Holden, MA/Wachusett) stopped Johnson for a four-yard loss on second down at the nine and then junior linebacker MITCHELL WELCH (Southington, CT/Southington) hurried Temple into an incompletion on the third down play. The Greyhounds then drove on the ensuing series 69 yards in seven plays. After sophomore DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) returned the kickoff 24 yards to the 31, Humphrey rushed 11 yards on keeper on the first play and hit junior wide receiver JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) for 14, eight yards on back-to-back plays. Canney then fired a 23-yard option play touchdown pass to Fabiano. Senior placekicker JON EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy) kicked the conversion for a 7-3 lead. The teams traded interceptions, first Martino picking off Temple at the Greyhounds 31, and then the Warriors' corner Sam Blevines returned the favor on the first play going the other way for 34 yards and touchdown (Garvey kicked the conversion) to give Merrimack at 10-7 advantage. And, then Woodward scampered 75 yards on the second play of the ensuing series (Eisele converted) as the Greyhounds regained the lead, 14-10, with 3:48 left. Woodard is now the only back in Greyhounds history to have more than one run of 70+ yards from scrimmage. Accomplished just eight times in their history Woodard has done it twice---also running 75 yards for a score against Saint Anselm (9-15-07). Merrimack completed the offensive first period dirving 60 yards in just four plays to again take the lead, 17-14. Temple completed passes of eight yards to tight end Sean McFee, 10 yards to wide receiver Jawara Loftis and finally 39 yards to Laham for the score. Garvey kicked the conversion. Eisele would kick two second-period
field goals, the second with just two seconds remaining to usher the Greyhounds
in front 20-17 at the halftime break. It was the first time in his career kicking
two in one game. In a long time-consuming 16-play, 56-yard drive Humphrey and
Woodard led the Greyhounds into range for Eisele. Woodward rushed six times
for 24 yards and Humphrey completed four-of-five passes for 32 yards. Humphrey completed passes of 24 yards to Beers, 15 yards to sophomore tight end MATT THIBEAULT (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg/Worcester Academy) to highlight the march. Eisele kicked a 20-yard field goal with 25 seconds left but a Merrimack personal foul penalty (roughing the kicker) set the Hounds up with a first and-goal at the one. Eisele kicked the field goal again from 20 yards after two rushes and an incomplete pass failed to find the endzone. Merrimack took the lead with a third-period touchdown as Temple connecteed with Loftis on an 11-yard slant (Garvey converted) with 7:32 remaining and then added insurance in the fourth period as Garvey kicked a 34-yard field goal and running back Mike Young scored from two yards out with 2:18 left. Temple completed passes of 10 yards to Loftis, 10 yards to tight end Ryan Salter and finally 11 more yards to Loftis for the score in the third period. A fumble recovery by Belvines stopped the Greyhounds on the ensuing series and started the Warriors on a 13-play, 55-yard drive culminating in the Garvey field goal. Temple found Laham for 14 yardsm Salter for 10, Laham for 17 more and 12 yards to wide receiver Chris McNeill to highlight the march. A Temple-to-Laham 45-yard pass play on a third-and-seven play to the Assumption two-yard line set up the final Merrimack touchdown. and at Saint Michael's . . . 17 points vs. S. New Hampshire and vs. Saint Rose
. . . senior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin), who scored over
1,100 points in high school, averaged 4.7 points with four double-figure games
. . . had 19 points in win at Southern Connecticut and 18 in win at Puerto Rico-Rio
Piedras . . .
THE SUPPORTING
CAST: mention keys to the team and the name of junior point guard MITCH
BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) comes up often . . . Bajema
led his high school team to a pair of state championships and will be counted
on to drive the Greyhound's bus and plainly get the ball to the right place
. . . hyper senior forward ALEX POPP (pronounced Pope) (Winchester, MA/Winchester)
specializes in making things happen . . . sophomore forward MAREK KULIG
(Brick, NJ/Msgr. Donovan) is back after an injury-plagued season . . . sophomore
forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Watertown, CT/Newton, MA North/Taft added considerable
athleticism to the roster and showed things in a nine point, 10 rebounds effort
at P.R. Rio Piedras and three double-figure rebound games . . .
NEW PEOPLE:
freshman forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) moved
across town and will be counted on to move into the regular rotation. Baldarelli
was the Massachusetts Player of the Year leading his team to the state title
game and averaged 22.3 points and 11.2 rebounds . . . sophomore transfer (Hampton
Institute) guard WALTER WEEKES (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and freshman
walkon TOBIN HAASE (Ridgefield, Nj/Ridgefield Park) have impressed in
preseason workouts. Another freshman, DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy
Name), who is also playing football, will add more athleticism.
THIS YEAR:
DeBari will build his new-look 2007-08 Greyhounds in the same mold of the
many successful Greyhound teams of the past. Expect the Greyhounds to lead the
league in diving on-the-floor and expect the team to play physical and aggressive
defense. Offense predicated
off switching defenses is always the order of the day with the more-than-occasional
three thrown in. The Hounds are now as athletic as anyone in the conference
which will make them a tough assignment on any given night. WOMEN'S
BASKETBALL
COACH:
Kerry PHAYRE (Providence '83) Hounds
Optimistic About Return to NCAA Post-Season!
LAST
YEAR: the reviews for last year were mixed to say the least. The team
reached the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs but their 13-16 overall record
was a "disappoinment" according to Coach KERRY PHAYRE. The needs were
easily seen on the statistics sheet . . . a more prominent guard situation in
which the perimeter game improves significantly and someone steps up to run
the offense. The team shot just .407 from the floor despite having one of the
dominant inside games in the conference and just .304 from three-point territory.
And, the Greyhounds have not had a 100-assist performer since 2001-02. THE NON-RETURNERS:
Phayre will first deal with the loss of starting guard Jess Paulson (North
Providence, RI/LaSalle Academy), who played in more games than anyone in Hounds
history. Paulson averaged 6.0 points, led the team with 92 assists and was third
with 19 thee-pointers. Reserve guard Ashley Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland)
averaged 2.3 points.
RETURNING
NUCLEUS: Phayre will mold the 2007-08 Greyhounds around the marvelous talents
of one of the Northeast-10 Conference's premier players in junior forward/captain
CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy). Floyd was second on the
team at 12.2 points-per-game and was the conference leader in rebounds (9.8)
for the second straight year and floor accuracy (.583), while earning second-team
all-star honors. She also finished with 19 double figure scoring games (52 career)
and eight double-doubles (39 in her career). Her top effort was 25 points, 11
rebounds in the win over nationally ranked Saint Rose. Floyd
will be the "marked player" once again for the Greyhounds as she moves into
hallowed territory in the team record book. She needs 25 points for 1,000 and
193 rebounds for 1,000---she will become merely the fourth Greyhound to reach
both figures!
The Greyhounds
resident director of determination junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI
(Fall River, MA/Durfee) averaged a team-leading 12.9 points and led the team
in three-pointers (55), free throw accuracy (.835), minutes played (955) and
was second in steals (62) and assists (67) and, oddly enough, third in rebounding
(3.3). She authored six 20-point games including a career-best 29 in a road
win at Southern New Hampshire; 23 in a road win at Saint Michael's (including
17 in a blistering second half display) and 22 at Bryant.
Senior guard/captain
BRITT BISHOP (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc) is the Greyhounds top defensive performer
and averaged 4.8 points. Her top efforts included a career-best 13 points in
a closer game at national champion Southern Connecticut and 12 in the first-round
playoff win at Franklin Pierce.
Freshman forward
KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) averaged 10.5 points and 4.1 rebounds
en route her selection on the conference all-freshman team. She poured in 22
points with 13 rebounds in a win at Merrimack and added 14 other double-figure
games. She finished third on the team in floor accuracy (.517) and led the team
with 24 blocks.
Senior forward/center
MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) is the other half of the Greyhound
twin-towers and averaged 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds with .520 floor accuracy.
She scored 19 second-half points in a dominatign performance against Saint Rose
with five other double-figure games.
Junior point
TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) averaged 1.8 points with 56 assists
but will counted on to provide on court leadership as the odds on-choice to
win the point guard spot. Early reviews from preseason are exciting the coaching
staff.
Senior forward
SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) (2.0 ppg), sophomore guard
LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock) (2.1 ppg), sophomore guard
AMANDA SHEEHY (Linde, NJ/Rosell Catholic) (1.7 ppg) and sophomore guard
MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) provided depth. Another guard,
sophomore JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman Hanson) missed the season
with an knee problem.
NEW PEOPLE:
athletic forward PAM MOBLEY (Worcester, MA/Doherty), who will bring
yet another polished frontcourt player to the equation and was a dominant rebounder
and shotblocker for her high school team . . . point THERESA AMELIO (Bronx,
NY/Preston) adds quickness and depth to the backcourt and guard MOLLY
GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) is a versatile offensive performer both
from the perimeter and taking the ball to the basket.
THIS YEAR:
Phayre will build her new-look 2007-08 Greyhounds in the same mold of her
many successful teams of the past and therefore expect the Hounds to lead the
league in physical and aggressive defense. Their dominant inside game should
once again play a prominent role as Floyd, Urban, and Parker are as solid a
threesome as there is in the conference.
Plasski is
a top-notch performer at the off-guard and Bishop is the most cerebral, and
top defensive, player on the squad. Phayre needs to increase production from
the rest of the backcourt contributors both in the perimeter and ballhandling
departments. Overall this team can hopefully set its sights high with a return
to the N.C.A.A. postseason.
