Standouts for the Greyhounds included junior defensive tackle TERRY STANFORD (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Park), who blocked a Greyhound record three field goal attempts in the game, while freshman JEFF MOORE (Worcester, MA/St. John's) blocked a punt for the Greyhounds. Moore, as the upback blocker, also ran for a first down on a fake fourth-down play for the second straight week. Stanford had back-to-back field goal blocks in the second period. The Greyhounds host Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack College SATURDAY . . . kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Multi-Sports Stadium as one of the major attractions for the annual FAMILY DAY on campus! Senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) ended with 3 6--9 tackles and shared three sacks with his brother, senior defensive end JOSH KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian). Josh finished with a pair of breakups while the pair combined for six quarterback pressures. The Yellow Jackets struck quickly and moved 70 yards in three plays on their first possession. Quarterback Rob Parent opened with a 15-yard screen pass to wide out Kertis Hussey and then Hill scampered 55 yards for a touchdown on the second play. Placekicker Marek Prezbylek made the conversion for a 7-0 advantage. The next series for the Greyhounds was their best effort of the first half moving 49 yards in nine plays albeit ending with a punt. The Hounds would block two field goals attempts by the Yellow Jackets before A.I.C. put two scores on the board in the waning moments of the half. Late in the second period the Yellow Jackets drove 49 yards in nine plays led by Hall (4 atts., 33 yards. Parent capped the march with two-yard sneak to make it 14-0 (with Prezbylek's conversion). On the second play of the next Hound' possession linebacker Terrence Holley intercepted junior quarterback TERRY HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) --- one of three by Humphrey --- and returned it 30 yards for a score 28 seconds after the previous score. The teams then played a scoreless third period. American International had a third field goal blocked by Stanford ending an 11-play, 64-yard drive, while the Hounds were stymied on downs twice and finally another interception. The Yellow Jackets would then convert a drive-ending interception by defensive back Allen Bush into an insurance touchdown driving 69 yards in 16 plays culminating in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Parent to wide receiver Tyler Scaccia (8 receptions, 97 yards). Humphrey led the Greyhounds to their lone touchdown in the final minutes. A 24-yard pass to senior wide receiver JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)-- has now caught a pass in 20 straight games---and subsequent completions to sophomore tight end MATT THIBEAULT (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg/Worcester Academy) for eight yards and to sophomore wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) for 19 yards to the Jacket's six highlighted the drive. COLLEGE: LAST YEAR'S GAME: Merrimack
34, Assumption 12 The Greyhounds struck on their first offensive play as freshman quarterback Marshall Tharpe (Irvine, CA/Santa Magarita) connected with junior wide receiver JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)---the leading receiver in the Northeast-10 Conference---for 44 yards over the middle after a short punt. The conversion by senior Mike Tobin (Walpole, MA/Walpole) hit the upright. On the next two Greyhound possessions Merrimack struck for paydirt via interceptions. Defensive back Jordan Rankins scampered 52 yards with the first one---Steve Garrity kicked the conversion and moments later Wild ran 11 yards with a pickoff for another score. Garvey again converted for a 14-6 lead. In between the Warriors, off a fumble recovery by Wild at the Hounds 40, drove to the 20 only to have a Garvey 34-yard field goal attempt miss wide right. In the second period Wild recovered another fumble---forced by defensive back Sam Blevines---at the Greyhound 25. Garvey kicked a 25-yard field goal for the only score of the period and a 17-6 halftime advantage. The third period began, much like the first half, with defensive back Randy Hurley picked off a pass and returned it 19 yards to the Hounds 17. Garvey kicked a 29-yard field goal, as the Hounds defense stiffened, to make it 20-6. Another interception, this by linebacker Scott Hayden, and 24-yard return to the Greyhound nine again set the Warriors up. Running back Mike Young, who rushed for a game-high 119 yards on 26 carries, scored from 12 yards out and Garvey kicked the conversion for a 27-6 advantage. On the ensuing series Tharpe completed five-of-six passes---two to junior tight end JAKE LONGENECKER (Fernandina, FL/Manchester, NH West) for six and 11 yards, one to sophomore wide receiver JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) for 35 yards and two to freshman wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) for five yards and 13 more for the touchdown. The conversion pass for two points failed. Merrimack then had its only sustained drive of the game, 10 plays for 73 yards en route to an insurance score. Quarterback Colin Temple, who completed 15-of 27 passes for 162 yards, found wide receiver Chris McNeill for the touchdown on a five-yard slant. Garvey's conversion completed the scoring. AND RESULTS Greyhounds Open Practice With Extended Optimism LAST YEAR: the reviews for the second year in the second Serge DeBari regime were mixed. The team had five players average 8.9 points or more in very balanced offense . . . they outrebounded their opponents . . . and, they beat a nationally ranked Saint Rose team down-the-stretch as DeBari joined the ranks of 300-game winners. But, instead of playing off-the-momentum of that choice victory they lost their final four games including a first-round conference playoff with Saint Michael's . . . they did shoot just .416 from the floor and and .323 from three-point territory and they averaged just 69.7 points per game . . . the team won at UMass Lowell (68-62) for the second straight year as PAT SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) dropped in 21, mostly from long range . . . and they claimed a 76-61 win at American International rallying from a seven-point halftime deficit as COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley) blistered for a career-high 30 points (13 for-19 from the floor). THE NON-RETURNERS: DeBari will miss the services of forward/two-year captain Justin Hotchkiss (Maynard, MA/Maynard/Cushing) who averaged just 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in an injury-plagued season . . . sharpshooting guard Mike Taft (Avon, CT/Avon) averaged 4.7 points off-the-bench but did make 24 three pointers (third on the club) including a career-best 17 in a 97-88 win over Merrimack. RETURNING NUCLEUS: DeBari will mold the 2006-07 Greyhounds around that balanced offense of a year ago. Ssenior forward/two-year captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable), the Hounds resident work-a holic and 1,700 point producer in high school, averaged a team-leading 13.4 points, 5.5 rebounds. shot a team-leading .483 from the floor. Twomey was spectacular (25 points) in a tough loss at nationally ranked Bentley and registered 20 double figure games . . . he had 26 points (tied career high) with 12-for-12 at the line at Stonehill . . . led the team in free throw accuracy (.807). Senior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) averaged 11.5 points and shot .460 from the field and led the team with 35 blocks . . . 16 double-figure games including seven double-doubles . . . had 24 in a win at Merrimack and 22 in a win at Saint Anselm. Senior guard LEROY BYRON (Worcester, MA/North) was the Hounds top perimeter player and averaged 8.9 points while playing over 800 minutes for the second straight year. Byron had 12 double-figure games . . . led the team with 40 three-pointers . . . career-high 20 points at Mercyhurst (with six three-pointers) and had 17 points in a win over Adelphi (with 10-for-10 free throws). Junior guard/forward PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) who at times was a deft passing machine and at other times showed signs of being a premier perimeter shooter . . . had career-best 24 points (five three-pointers) in upset of nationally ranked Saint Rose . . . 21 points (with six three-pointers) in win at UMass Lowell . . . first career double-double 19 points, 10 rebounds in home win over Le Moyne. Sophomore guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti) averaged 9.3 points (fourth on team) in 871 minutes (second only to Twomey) and team-leading 47 steals . . . 13 double-figure games . . . 18 points at Bryant and at Saint Michael's . . . 17 points vs. S. New Hampshire and vs. Saint Rose . . . senior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin), who scored over 1,100 points in high school, averaged 4.7 points with four double-figure games . . . had 19 points in win at Southern Connecticut and 18 in win at Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. THE SUPPORTING CAST: mention keys to the team and the name of junior point guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) comes up often . . . Bajema led his high school team to a pair of state championships and will be counted on to drive the Greyhound's bus and plainly get the ball to the right place . . . hyper senior forward ALEX POPP (pronounced Pope) (Winchester, MA/Winchester) specializes in making things happen . . . sophomore forward MAREK KULIG (Brick, NJ/Msgr. Donovan) is back after an injury-plagued season . . . sophomore forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Watertown, CT/Newton, MA North/Taft added considerable athleticism to the roster and showed things in a nine point, 10 rebounds effort at Puerto Rico Rio Piedras and three double-figure rebound games. NEW PEOPLE: freshman forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) moved across town and will be counted on to move into the regular rotation. Baldarelli was the Massachusetts Player of the Year leading his team to the state title game and averaged 22.3 points and 11.2 rebounds . . . sophomore transfer (Hampton Institute) guard WALTER WEEKES (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and freshman walkon TOBIN HAASE (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Park) have impressed in preseason workouts. Another freshman, DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), who is also playing football, will add more athleticism. THIS YEAR: DeBari will build his new-look 2007-08 Greyhounds in the same mold of the many successful Greyhound teams of the past. Expect the Greyhounds to lead the league in diving on-the-floor and expect the team to play physical and aggressive defense. He is asking Bluford to move to the point this year and also needs substantial offense from his athletic guard. Twomey needs to at least repeat his statistics of a year ago, Diethorn needs to get his floor accuracy in the mid-.500s and Byron needs to get back to his sophomore year consistency. Key man might just be Shea, who has shown signs of being the top perimeter player on the squad and at other times the team's best passer. Offense predicated off switching defenses is always the order of the day with the more-than-occasional three thrown in. The Hounds are now as athletic as anyone in the conference which will make them a tough assignment on any given night. A sidelight this year will the Hounds race to the magical 1,000-victory mark (they have 990 entering the year!) . . . no New England Division II team has ever reached that plateau! WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH: Kerry PHAYRE
(Providence '83) SCHEDULE
AND RESULTS Greyhounds Optimistic About Return to NCAA Post-Season! LAST
YEAR: the reviews for last year were mixed to say the least. The team
reached the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs but their 13-16 overall record
was a "disappoinment" according to Coach KERRY PHAYRE. The needs were
easily seen on the statistics sheet . . . a more prominent guard situation in
which the perimeter game improves significantly and someone steps up to run
the offense. The team shot just .407 from the floor despite having one of the
dominant inside games in the conference and just .304 from three-point territory.
And, the Greyhounds have not had a 100-assist performer since 2001-02. THE NON-RETURNERS: Phayre will first deal with the loss of starting guard Jess Paulson (North Providence, RI/LaSalle Academy), who played in more games than anyone in Hounds history. Paulson averaged 6.0 points, led the team with 92 assists and was third with 19 thee-pointers. Reserve guard Ashley Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) averaged 2.3 points. RETURNING NUCLEUS: Phayre will mold the 2007-08 Greyhounds around the marvelous talents of one of the Northeast-10 Conference's premier players in junior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy). Floyd was second on the team at 12.2 points-per-game and was the conference leader in rebounds (9.8) for the second straight year and floor accuracy (.583), while earning second-team all-star honors. She also finished with 19 double figure scoring games (52 career) and eight double-doubles (39 in her career). Her top effort was 25 points, 11 rebounds in the win over nationally ranked Saint Rose. Floyd will be the "marked player" once again for the Greyhounds as she moves into hallowed territory in the team record book. She needs 25 points for 1,000 and 193 rebounds for 1,000---she will become merely the fourth Greyhound to reach both figures! The Greyhounds resident director of determination junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) averaged a team-leading 12.9 points and led the team in three-pointers (55), free throw accuracy (.835), minutes played (955) and was second in steals (62) and assists (67) and, oddly enough, third in rebounding (3.3). She authored six 20-point games including a career-best 29 in a road win at Southern New Hampshire; 23 in a road win at Saint Michael's (including 17 in a blistering second half display) and 22 at Bryant. Senior guard/captain BRITT BISHOP (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc) is the Greyhounds top defensive performer and averaged 4.8 points. Her top efforts included a career-best 13 points in a closer game at national champion Southern Connecticut and 12 in the first-round playoff win at Franklin Pierce. Freshman forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) averaged 10.5 points and 4.1 rebounds en route her selection on the conference all-freshman team. She poured in 22 points with 13 rebounds in a win at Merrimack and added 14 other double-figure games. She finished third on the team in floor accuracy (.517) and led the team with 24 blocks. Senior forward/center MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) is the other half of the Greyhound twin-towers and averaged 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds with .520 floor accuracy. She scored 19 second-half points in a dominatign performance against Saint Rose with five other double-figure games. Junior point TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) averaged 1.8 points with 56 assists but will counted on to provide on court leadership as the odds on-choice to win the point guard spot. Early reviews from preseason are exciting the coaching staff. Senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) (2.0 ppg), sophomore guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock) (2.1 ppg), sophomore guard AMANDA SHEEHY (Linde, NJ/Rosell Catholic) (1.7 ppg) and sophomore guard MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) provided depth. Another guard, sophomore JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman Hanson) missed the season with an knee problem. NEW PEOPLE: athletic forward PAM MOBLEY (Worcester, MA/Doherty), who will bring yet another polished frontcourt player to the equation and was a dominant rebounder and shotblocker for her high school team . . . point THERESA AMELIO (Bronx, NY/Preston) adds quickness and depth to the backcourt and guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) is a versatile offensive performer both from the perimeter and taking the ball to the basket. THIS YEAR: Phayre will build her new-look 2007-08 Greyhounds in the same mold of her many successful teams of the past and therefore expect the Hounds to lead the league in physical and aggressive defense. Their dominant inside game should once again play a prominent role as Floyd, Urban, and Parker are as solid a threesome as there is in the conference. Plasski is
a top-notch performer at the off-guard and Bishop is the most cerebral, and
top defensive, player on the squad. Phayre needs to increase production from
the rest of the backcourt contributors both in the perimeter and ballhandling
departments. Overall this team can hopefully set its sights high with a return
to the N.C.A.A. postseason.
